First...after learning about passing of Dolores after I made this video I got emotional again. RIP Dolores. This song captivated me, moved me and caught all my attention. I listened to it 10+ after making this video. This is simply...timeless.
Five Finger Death Punch actually was planning to do a cover with Delores in 2018 of Zombies, but she passed before they were able to get together. They ended up doing a tribute cover instead.
As The Cranberries fan for over 30 years, it made me so emotional to see someone listen to one of their songs for the first time and react to it the way you did! Bring back those childhood and nostalgic memories and reminded me of how much I've loved listening to their music.
The lead singer's first name, "Dolores", means "pains" in Spanish. That's exactly what listening to her voice gives me, in the best possible way. Every time she opened her mouth to sing a note, her voice had this beautifully sombre and melancholic quality which still hits me in the pit of my soul. I'm sure there are many others who share that sentiment. I love her. ❤
"Zombie" and "Ode to My Family" are two really personal songs from the Cranberries, with two very different sounds. Both are pretty essential listening.
@@vic-2200 Vic "Zombie" makes me cry too. Absolutely. The song can obviously be many things to many people so I am not trying to take anything away from you regarding what you get from this song, but I felt it was important to clarify the song's original intent since I think the message Dolores intended is important. The singer wrote this song in response to a splinter faction of the IRA bombing a shopping area in Warrington, England in 1993, which injured many and killed Jonathan Ball aged 3 and Tim Parry, age 12. It was part of The Troubles, an ongoing conflict that had lasted years in Northern Ireland. Thus, if you've ever seen it, the images in the music video for Zombie show real footage of the actual walls with paintings/graffiti referring to the Troubles as well as real British soldiers with guns. The video was shot in specific areas of Belfast. The footage was shot during the Troubles. Best wishes.
I'm from Limerick (where the band are from) and this morning I was teaching Spanish and Italian teens in an english summer school. All week we played this song and got all the classes together in the hall to sing this song for fun. It was just amazing. Really was.
I am so happy you are so understanding of how special the songs you reacting to! I grew up with the songs and for your age you are unbelievably talented in getting what these “oldies” mean to all who grew up with them! Love all your reactions!
As an Irish woman of course I love the Crabberries. Dolores was taken too soon. She does Irish keening fabulous. Pentatonix cover is beautiful. You should listen to their song Zombies. Great reaction 👍
Dolores Ó Riordan incorporates a lot of traditional Irish vocal inflections found in Sean nós .Which is traditionally sung in the Irish language and transposed to English. Many Irish singers including the Corrs Incorporate many aspects of traditional music in there vocals. That’s why it’s very emotional One of the inflections from the tradition of Sean-nos is called keening. She also sings in her Irish accent not American
What you are enjoying is an Irish Lilt (breath voice) and the la la portion is known as keening a wail or cry that was often used to grieve at an Irish funeral
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this... But it is funny how you keep mentioning this should be a part of a soundtrack, because for a couple of years now I can't listen to it without expecting to hear the voice of Erin Quinn from "Derry Girls". This was the song played in the most important moments of the show. I read somewhere, its use was approved by Dolores herself right before her untimely death - as she was initially involved with the soundtrack. This song is perfect for a show whose story focuses on a group of teens going to Catholic School in Derry, Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It is funny, sad, ridiculous, poignat, etc. And it is the main song of the beautiful depiction of one of the most important moments of recent history - the signing of The Good Friday Agreement - as seen through the lense of teenagers just leaving school hoping for a brighter and more peaceful future.
I've always been fascinated by this song and this vocal performance. I was hesitant when PTX covered it, even though it was PTX who I KNOW I can trust, but I couldn't imagine what they would do. They did a heavenly interpretation, and Mitch truly honored Dolores's iconic vocals beautifully with his artistic choices.
The Cranberries were a great band. Dolores was a beautiful woman who wasn't afraid to speak her mind. I was gutted when she died. The band did a college tour of the USA and did get played on radio.
My world shattered when she passed. She was a pioneer in being outspoken about her eating disorder and seeking treatment. Even though it was extremely common for the time (think heroin chic) it was not something openly talked about. Many people found the courage to seek help and live because of her honesty and bravery.
That would be the Dolores effect you are feeling. Direct emotion to voice interface. The reason for why The Cranberries were so loved. It was Dolore's life story we were hearing. Pity this particular relationship went bad, but they guy she is singing this about is the male vocalist at the end.
No Doubt had a song like that. Don’t Speak was about the lead singer’s failed relationship with one of the band members. But at least they still made the band work after that.
The “backup” vocal (heard several times throughout the song, and especially in the outro) is actually Delores, recorded on a different track. Many female singers with distinctive voices do this. Joni Mitchell, for instance, often sang the harmonies, especially on some of her early folkier albums.
Weird you say that it could have been used in a school drama set in the 90's in an emotional final scene because it was used in an amazing show 'Derry Girls' set in the 90's and was used in such a perfect way as it played as the Good Friday Agreement was passed in Northern Ireland in 98 - a monumental moment for peace - it's brings me to tears as a child of peace (12 when it was signed!)
Just found your channel and your reaction here is priceless. You're a younger fellow who has a great musical journey ahead of you, I'm jealous! There are songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s that you will LOVE. Can't wait for you to experience them. SUBBED!
This song was played in many movie soundtracks. It’s just so freaking good it fits in a lot of different areas genre wise. Dolores’s vocals are just so sweeping on this song, considering she’s written it herself along with 65% of all the songs that the cranberries ever did, came from Dolores. As young as she was at that point, she had a way of drawing on melancholy, and injecting it into her lyrics. It’s amazing if you think about it, her music has an affect on people that’s so profound. God I hope I made sense, lol
In Ireland I would say this is their most enduring song. It's played after big sporting events and you definitely hear it quite regularly compared to their other songs.
Her voice, that keening… it actually reaches out caressing you before reaching in and snatching your heart and squeezing it, twisting it, forcing every nerve in your body to come alive…. It is so beautiful and distinctive… and when she lets her voice open completely…. It is chilling in a beautiful way. I played this CD to death and had to replace it twice.
AT my sisters high school graduation in 2001, her and her friends (including one of my band's former drummers) formed a band and her classmates overwhelmingly wanted this to be their graduation song. That alone left me overjoyed! She sang it as a duet with a friend, and they NAILED the vocals and harmonies, and just before the event, told their hesitant and amazing guitarist to go ahead and shred during the climax at the end. It was absolutely INCREDIBLE!! They took this timeless beyond beautiful song, made it their own while staying true to the original. I was completely entranced and overcome with such ethereal joy as I watched and listened to these young kids play something that I grew up with, played, and adored when I was in high school, while they totally blew everyone's minds with such pathos and sincerity. Seriously, to this day it is still one of my favorite live music performances I've ever experienced.
I miss Dolores every day! She was an angel in her own right, and had a voice like spun silk. I still have hair goosebumps every time in all the same exact places each time I listen to Dreams 💔
This song appeared in the 90’s movie Boys On The Side with Drew Barrymore, Whoopi Goldberg and Mary Louise Parker which was a drama/comedy teen movie. I love this song and The Cranberries is one of my favorite bands.
Hurling is the national sport of Ireland (passionate game). Limerick is the county Dolores comes from (32 counties in Ireland). In 2018, shortly after Dolores died, Limerick won the hurling All Ireland for the 1st time in 45 years. They played Dreams to the 82,000 people in the stadium. Talk about emotional. The Limerick team have won the hurling All Ireland 4 more times since, and each time they play Dreams. The players go biserk when it comes on. You can see it means a lot to them. One of our own.
I can't believe you hadn't reacted to the Pentatonix cover of this one yet! (It's on their "At Home" EP album that was all recorded/videoed separately during lockdown). They did a beautiful job with it, and since Mitch is a huge Cranberries/Dolores fan, he absolutely did an amazing tribute to her delivery and style.
I love just how you loved it. Beautiful authentic reaction. But that’s our girl…Can’t label that genius. Dolores was a living angel. Voice to match. Xxx
They did a "Tiny Desk Concert" for NPR. It was really good. Dolores' 1994 Woodstock performance of Dreams (also on YT) is just quintessentially 90's in every way--she was great.
This is the best way to describe that version - esp with the video. I've never been able to put my finger on why that video/song feels so different but you just did it - it feels like heaven - quite fitting RIP Dolores.
I was emotional when I heard it when it first came out. Still makes me emotional all these years later. Such is the beauty of this song and the pure voice of Dolores. ❤
Thank you so much for reacting to this, no one ever does and look I’m not hating on Zombie, but Dreams is way fucking better, idk why everybody thinks Zombie just slaps or something, this is one of my all time favorite songs in general takes me back to simpler times, it makes me emotional as well it’s such a freakin beautiful song and I just don’t understand why no one else thinks so, anyways keep up the good work bro
It's such an amazing song and so sad she's gone. i would've loved to hear her sing with Aurora. If you haven't heard her yet you should listen to Through the eyes of a child live at Nidarosdomen, the entire concert is amazing though...she's sort of like a Norwegian/modern version of Dolores. She'll make you cry in a good way. Her voice is absolutely, phenomenally angelic.❤️
5:00 ooo!!! Now that you mention it, I remember watching a 90s show called My So-Called Life back when I was a teen and I’m pretty sure they had “Dreams” by The Cranberries playing in an episode or three!
This song, and this singer, just grabs you by the soul and forces you to feel things you never thought you could. Your tears aren't unusual. I'm listening to you listen to this, and tears are streaming down my face. EVERY SINGLE TIME I listen to this song, specifically, it makes me cry. She sounds so hopeful and so vulnerable, just leaving her heart out there to cherish or destroy. How could you not feel deep emotion?
the teen movie (TV show) vibe you got is spot on....'My so called life' with a very young Claire Daines and Jared Letto!! They don'tmake TV like that anymore..Angela chase and Jordan Catelano, oh the memories. Dreams was played in an episode. Cranberries were amazing and Delores is missed so much in Ireland. May she rest easy!
Maybe it seems so familiar because it was featured in at least two movies that I can think of...Boys on the Side...and You’ve Got Mail. Both from the 90’s. It’s also been used in several commercials! PENTATONIX has also done a beautiful, respectful cover of this iconic song you should react to.....I think you’d really enjoy it.
Another one that actually came one year before Boys on the Side and 4 before You've Got Mail was the movie "Chungking Express" from the Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai.
Dolores had a beautiful & mesmerising voice-absolutely loved the Cranberries. It is so magical and moving to hear The Cranberries music again in Derry Girls- a perfect, heartwarming and heartbreaking homage
Great reaction. Thank you for Sharing your time and will see you in the next one. Pentatonix did a great cover of this beautiful song. As you are new to the Cranberries you should also listen to their song, Zombie. It's a totally different experience but just as emotionally charged. Peace.
This was pretty emotional , the lyrics on screen and our beautiful gorgeous girl in the background. So often I watch Dreams' An icon and truly amazing band. Night night beautiful girl ❤❤❤
The song Linger made me a fan after seeing them on mtv, I loved Dreams after hearing it on the movie "You've got mail".. but the song When you're gone made me fall In love 💕

This song appears in the movie you’ve got mail as introductory song! A wonderful song!
She and Sinead have extraordinary voices!! This song is very melancholy, in between happy and sad. Love it, and love her, RIP Delores!!
Every time I hear her sing it sends chills down my spine. What a voice.
agreed!
Same here!
And it was one of her biggest insecurities..... because she didn't sound like anyone else. I like to think she grew to appreciate what she had.❤
Holy crap. You had exactly the reaction I did the first time I heard this (and still do). I immediately teared up, and have no idea why.

Dolores had such a voice that Pavarotti wanted to sing with her. Ave Maria. And she did it the best. WOW!
Goodness, I didn't know this exited, thank you so much for mentioning it
She sure did, bless her‼️ She would've known that song from church. Every Catholic does, but only she sings so perfectly‼️😪❤🇬🇧
It's making you emotional because you are hearing the voice of an angel. I also love the drumming.
Certain female Irish voices are mesmerising

This was pretty emotional , the lyrics on screen and our beautiful gorgeous girl in the background. So often I watch Dreams' An icon and truly amazing band. Night night beautiful girl ❤❤❤
The song Linger made me a fan after seeing them on mtv, I loved Dreams after hearing it on the movie "You've got mail".. but the song When you're gone made me fall In love 💕
One of our own. Amazing lady from Limerick. Got to see them in 1997 in a small venue in Limerick and wow. You'd have been in awe.
