Unfortunately all of the old (and very interesting) ARG theories get basically destroyed by the Cloverfield Paradox. One reason why OG Cloverfield fans tend to pretend that Paradox doesn't exist.
I remember seeing 10 Cloverfield Lane in theaters and thinking it deserved an Oscar for audio engineering. I think Jen will really love it. Be sure to watch it in your home theater, not in your room.
I'm a big sucker for both giant monsters and found footage movies, so I've always had a deep love for Cloverfield. Another awesome film that combines both is TrollHunter 2010. It's a fun take on the Nordic folklore.
Not sure if this was explained or not, but you have to remember about the internet presence this movie had. They made fake websites for in-universe companies and made Facebook pages for the characters where people could find clues and figure out exactly what was happening, like the company that makes slushy drinks used a special ingredient that comes from the ocean close to where they discover the monster species. Rob was leaving New York to work for that company.
As a fairly low budget production, they didn't have much money for pre-launch marketing, so they created what is probably the best ARG marketing campaign in movie history. They built out massive back-stories for the characters, had them conversing with each other on social media accounts, created websites for fictitious companies they work for and so much more! There's some really great videos here on youtube that explain this ARG campaign, and how it gives you so much more understanding of the events of the movie. I can't recommend checking it out more!
I feel like this film aged very well. You don't see movies like this anymore so it stands out as a product of it's time in a really great way. Great found footage monster flick.
Man the lore for this film is so deep. The company in Japan that he was going to work for was the company that discovered/awoke the monster and used its food source as a super addictive ingredient in their drink called Slusho.
Fun Fact: The Statue Of Liberty's head that came crashing down into the street is about 50% larger than its real life size. CG supervisor David Vickery said in an interview that many people imagined the head being much bigger than it actually is, and that the size was increased due to complaints that the head looked too small in the trailer.
This film and cloverfield as a whole has so much background lore; I’d love if you guys reacted to the other two, especially 10 cloverfield lane, also a cool detail, if you reverse the last few seconds of the end credits, you hear the soldier say it’s still alive
I remember the viral campaign for this movie was nuts. All the "Jason" yelling had people speculating this was a Power Rangers movie lmao. One of my fav comfort movies.
2:04 Jen, there is a movie called Overlord that was originally meant to be part of the cloverfield universe but was made as a standalone movie instead, it’s set in WWII and about N*ZI experiments such as zombie like creatures, possibly the movie you were thinking of?
Fun fact: Towards the middle and end of the film when the camera glitches out, there are various still frames from classic black and white monster movies. The notable ones are King Kong (1933), THEM! (1954), and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953)
I love that they solved the eternal question of all found footage movies: Why is the cameraman still filming? Because Hud is a doofus who can't read the room.
I love how much lore the movie has. Like the substance that is found in the parasites blood is also an ingredient in the in-world company Slusho. Which is also the company that Rob was moving to Japan for.
One of my favorite movies. Saw opening weekend and immediately fell down the rabbit hole after seeing it. The viral marketing for this movie is hands-down one of the best ever. They give you morsels about the monster before the film and testimonies from one off characters that weave into the movie.
Two fun facts that I found on IMDB (the last one I haven't seen anyone mention on other reactions before): - The title was originally just a codename for the movie, and was named after Cloverfield Blvd in Santa Monica, where the Bad Robot production offices were located during the making of the film. - For those that have seen "Lost", the Dharma Initiative logo can be seen briefly at the beginning of the movie. JJ Abrams was a producer for both this movie and "Lost".
3:30 not exactly the conventional found footage film, but 2023’s late night with the devil was *technically* a found footage film , but was a genius innovation in the subgenre! you guys should definitely watch it if you haven’t already
I think after the Cloverfield movies, you should check out Overlord. I remember when it came out there was a lot of discussion on it possibly being part of the Cloverfield anthology. Especially since it was made similar to how 10 cloverfield lane was made, where the movie was bought and altered a bit to be part of the anthology. There's also possible references to it in Cloverfield Paradox. However even though it was confirmed it wasn't part of the universe, it's still a great movie in it's own right. Oh and there's supposedly a Cloverfield 2 in the works, but it has been in the works for years, so who knows if it'll ever come out.
*whispers* "It's still alive..." 11:20 "What could be strong enough to leave claw marks in solid stone?" "End Of Watch" is another good found footage movie.
This used to be one of my favorite movies to make people watch lol One tidbit I remember hearing JJ Abrams talking about was that the intent was for the monster/alien to actually be a newborn baby. So it's born and is immediately being attacked by almost every living thing it comes in contact with. Adds an interesting element to the movie imo.
I remember my mom and I going to see this when it came out. They had signs at different theaters saying that it may cause motion sickness. I didn’t think a movie was capable of doing that. Until I went to see it and totally got sick. But it was definitely worth it. This is one of those movies you had to see on the big screen.
I really like found footage movies especially ones with like ARGs or like big puzzles behind the film just brings me back to the good ol days. 😂 Cloverfield was one of those ones that brings me back in those days.
This movie and just the Cloverfield movies in general use a lot of ARG to answer or formulate a lot of questions so that's why it can't feel that the movie leaves more questions than answers (besides the fact that there's some stuff that was never explained)
This movie holds a special place in my heart it’s not only one of the first horror movies I watched as a kid, but it’s a movie that really got me into the process of making films and truly made me fall in love with movies
Cloverfield stands the test of time as one of the great found footage films of all time. That being said, another good one is a Norwegian found footage film called Troll Hunter (2010). I highly recommend you guys watch it because it is so good and i know you guys will enjoy it.
The splash at the end was the ship from Cloverfield paradox. The Cloverfield monster was just a baby. That's why it was mostly running away from the chaos. It was scared.
10 Cloverfield Lane is soooo good I gotta see you guys react to it! My first time watching Cloverfield was on a Greyhound bus, so the handheld cam was extremely jarring and I hated that experience 😅
during the time of this movie the MTA was actually putting in cell towers in the subway so people had a single down there it would probably be the best place for them to use there cellphones in the subway in the movie because the monster was destroying cell towers on builds it was hitting
Oh nice. I didn't realize Jen hadn't seen this one yet. This movie brings back so many memories. Giant monsters eating people just makes me happy. Great reaction.
One of my favorite horror movies. No longer find it scary after all these years, but it still holds a special place in my heart. Along with blair witch.
I was HOOKED on this movie ever since the untitled teaser before Transformers. This along with Spiderman 3 pretty much sparked my love for movies. Matt Reeves instantly became one of my favorite directors. Great movie with good memories of the beginnings of internet viral marketing.
This was one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2008 after the trailer dropped. They didn't name the movie in the trailer, no one knew what the hell was going on, people were speculating that it might be a new Godzilla movie. I remember just studying this trailer on OG TH-cam over and over and speculating with friends what might be happening.
I disagree. I thought the beginning was a great way to introduce all the characters. I was already interested in their drama and it was enough for me to get invested in their journey and well being. I forgot it was a monster movie for a moment.
Greatest found footage, kaiju movie ever! I remember saw it back in the day in a 16 seat VIP cinema room. The sounds were brutal! I was shaking at the end!
somewere i read 😅 that the others movies were not in the same universe, but how much they were alike they realize that they can unite the lore and expand it, so they add some stuff to link the movies and made like a trilogy , so they change the names of the movies too.
One of the few movies my dad took me to see as a kid and I loved it, my dad threw up though. The handheld movement on a big screen was too much for him lol
I remember seeing this movie when it first came out and I was surprised on how they shot the movie. In college I remember we were talking so much about the movie before coming out that we would say “I heard it was a Godzilla movie” and this and that so many theories about it.
I remember watching this movie in the theater 🎥 I was Epic! Definitely my favorite found footage movie of all time. I heard the Clock started again on the website like 1, 2 years ago. 🤷♂️ I heard they were supposed to make a second part but who knows. Amazing Reactions 🙌👏🤝😎
In the beginning in a blink and you miss it type of Easter egg, you can see the Dharma initiative logo in the beginning of the tape. The monster was actually something smaller that ate a deep sea nectar that made things huge. This thing is just a baby in this movie. The parasites fed off of this giant monster baby and they became enlarged as well, and when they bite you, an infection is spread due to the deep sea and makes people explode. Coincidentally, the deep sea nectar is one of the secret ingredients used in the JJ Abrams movie slushy called slusho. The whole marketing ARG was awesome with the tagruato website. I think there is a video in the special features where the monster sinks an oil tanker and its being reported. They did the same sort of ARG for 10 Cloverfield lane. And then for The Cloverfield Paradox. The site renewed fairly "recently" like 2 years ago. There is a direct sequel to this movie planned.
I saw this movie the first time couple years ago. I loved it! The found footage point of view the monster. You know it really got me interested and finding out more lore about the Cloverfield universe Really good franchise. I really hope that they make the new one really well I know. I'm looking forward to it Holden, Jenna really hope yall. Like it
Dang never expected a react on this. I loved this movie when it came out. Great choice. Side note, in my opinion the sequels are both worth watching: Cloverfield Lane because it's good, but Cloverfield Paradox because it's bad lol
This movie took a lot of gravity from 9/11, just like Godzilla is based on what the Japanese went through when the atomic bomb was dropped. I guarantee if Holden shows this movie to Matt, Matt's brain is going to melt lol.
was waiting to see when someone mentioned how 9/11 was still very fresh. The scene where everyone is covered debris and smoke really shook my old man when he went to see this with me in theaters.
You guys should check out vantage point with Dennis quaid if you haven’t seen it. Really fun movie with tons of different angles and perspectives on the events that take place.
I saw this in theaters, three times. I was shocked to find out 75% of the outside footage was CGI. It looks pretty realistic. The other two: 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield Paradox are good films too. I like the connections to the original. But as individual films, they have their own merits. I hope you watch them as well. Jen might like them. ✌️😉
I would definitely recommend for you guys to check out REC and REC 2. Hands down my favorite two “handheld/footage” movies. Would make for a fantastic reaction if you guys never seen them 🙂
Love this movie, unfortunately it's kinda underrated, but of all the time I've watched this, I've never noticed the thing crashing into the sea at the end till just now, cheers Mr Holden 👍 good movie choice, I can tell Mrs Holden genuinely enjoyed it too 👏
If you are enjoying these hand held movies, you may also enjoy the “one shot” movies. A great one to check out is Silent House. Very suspenseful and fantastically shot.
My favorite found footage movie is Project Almanac it’s about some highschool students who build a Time Machine…. You guys should def check it out one of these days when you get a chance
I hope you see this comment. If you haven’t watched it, in the special features, there’s a “special investigation mode”. Watch this version. It adds so, so much more to the story. Backstory, characters, etc. You’ll love it. It’s one of the best special features I’ve ever seen on any movie. And they’re absolutely going to work on a direct sequel.. at some point. At the end of the credits, you hear a voice say “it’s still alive”. The audio is played backwards in the film, but if you reverse it, you can clearly hear it.
Another great found footage movie you guys could watch is a movie called "Afflicted" (2013). It's a horror movie, so you might want to save it until October, but it's a very underrated movie. It's unfortunately a bit hard to find, though
This was probably the last movie where I let the trailer set my expectations (especially when it's JJ Abrams). I saw the trailer, ending with the "OMG! OMG!" moment and I was so amped. And then I went and saw a decent monster destruction movie that, like Lost, set up a lot of questions, never to be answered. I saw a 7.5-7.8 movie, which isn't bad at all, but I was assuming it would be at least in the high 80s.
All the movies are related the difference is the vantage point or perspectives and where all the characters are at in a time zone timeline and geolocation of all these 3 movies
Lmao I said that was the clock from spider-man 2 then seconds later Holden said it. Although I’m pretty sure it was the one where the lady said she wasn’t paying for the pizzas
You learn from stuff outside of the movie on some official websites that the creature was living underwater and what fell into the water was a sattelite and that is what woke the Cloverfield monster up.
I know you guys mostly watch films but I'd love to see yours and Jens reaction to The Oldest View, is a handheld horror style 2-3 videos on youtube you might enjoy.
I love the director commentary explaining that "Clover" is just a baby lost and looking for it's mother.
I have a theory regarding WHY clover is looking for its mother, but if they go into the other movies its a spoiler
Unfortunately all of the old (and very interesting) ARG theories get basically destroyed by the Cloverfield Paradox. One reason why OG Cloverfield fans tend to pretend that Paradox doesn't exist.
@ How do you figure? From all the things that I've seen they can still exist together quite well
I remember seeing 10 Cloverfield Lane in theaters and thinking it deserved an Oscar for audio engineering.
Have you seen the movie Tremors? It's a really fun movie.
@@TimothyMills77 Absolutely. Watching Tremors was practically mandatory for people growing up in the 90s.
Yess troll hunter is super underrated, as is the ritual and the empty man.
As a Norwegian, i loved that movie.. All my childhood trauma comming back to bite me in the a** whenever i think of that movie X)
I love Troll Hunter!!
Not sure if this was explained or not, but you have to remember about the internet presence this movie had. Rob was leaving New York to work for that company.
Hud's name is a play on the term Heads Up Display, as we were watching the movie from his POV for the majority of the film
I think the ARG work exceeded the effort put into the on-screen characters and story! Sad, really. Especially when I realized this was it.
I feel like this film aged very well. You don't see movies like this anymore so it stands out as a product of it's time in a really great way. Great found footage monster flick.
Indeed.
Man the lore for this film is so deep. The company in Japan that he was going to work for was the company that discovered/awoke the monster and used its food source as a super addictive ingredient in their drink called Slusho.

Even though it's not fully found footage, I think a great addition to the theme you guys got going would be the 2012 film End of Watch.
Man, that’s such an insanely good film. I hope they watch it too.
I took my wife to see this on our first date. I'm just happy the shaky cam didn't scare her away from me. 😆

The internet, we have been given a task to find this channel, go forth and produce results!
Another great found footage movie you guys could watch is a movie called "Afflicted" (2013). It's a horror movie, so you might want to save it until October, but it's a very underrated movie. It's unfortunately a bit hard to find, though
You guys need to react to both of the “Rec” movies!!
I like the theory that the monster's foot prints look like a clover, hence the name cloverfield.
You learn from stuff outside of the movie on some official websites that the creature was living underwater and what fell into the water was a sattelite and that is what woke the Cloverfield monster up.
this movie surprised me. i liked it more than i thought i would.
I've been hoping for a Cloverfield reaction finally got one let goo
I know you guys mostly watch films but I'd love to see yours and Jens reaction to The Oldest View, is a handheld horror style 2-3 videos on youtube you might enjoy.
