  • Starting the works on the land. Its hot but the fence is important so i have to dig a lot of holes and have to work with cement, sand, gravel and stones. Also cutting brunches to get a better view to the sea. Tzakis comes with his tractor to tell me some helpful things with water...and the view is getting better and better...

Good Job Casey. A few tips.
    1. Buy a straw hat. You 're exposing yourself a lot to the summer sun.
    2. Use the derelict stone house as a tool shed. With all these olive trees you 're gonna need a place for the harvesting equipment and you don't want all this stuff inside your house.
    3. Wear garden boots. Vipers are rare but they are a thing, especially close to water and/or stone walls.
    4. Make sure you put some effort in draining ditches. It can rain a lot in Pilion and you don't want streams appearing suddenly near your house.
    5. The place is excellent for bee keeping. Maybe you wanna give it a try, especially if you plant fruit trees.
    6. Plant a few plane trees. Pilion is full of them, they become huge and their shade (and sound) is amazing.
    7. Collect rain water for watering but also as a readily reservoir against forest fires - they can be really nasty.
Overall, congrats on your vision, effort and respect for the place. Pilion is one of the most beautiful places in Greece.

#1 I would start working at sunrise and after the sunset, rest of the day stay in shade, no need to kiill yourself while chasing the dream. Get some chicken, they are deadly to snakes.

Solids tips @archimedesnation! Vipers and scorpions may nest under stockpiles of wood or rocks, so please beware if you are about to move something and always use gloves. You can recognize vipers by the horn on their forehead and their fat short body that leads to a thin tail, or the zig zag patter on the body (not all vipers have the zig zag pattern though). As for the water tank, you have to move the trapped air out of the hose by using water gravity and at the same time suck the trapped air out. As soon as the air is out, it is easy to use. You don't have to tie the hose tightly for leaks as soon as you keep the hose tip above the water level in the tank. Also please use a suncream along with the straw hat archimdesnation mentioned. You may also use a camouflage shading net for extra shadow (for you and your car). One last thing is that concrete and heat don't work together. Make sure you moist the concrete surface regularly for the first days and not let it dry to the environment temperature. This way it will get stronger than it would if it dried out. Can't wait for more content!

If you are ever going to build a house there use massive stone blocks with insulation on the outside to prevent the heat from entering your house. Just did some foundations recently and even doing it with a mixer is very time intensive. Consider using a tool to dig all the holes at once and hire some workers and cement truck for one day. This will cost money but saves a lot of time, construction is team work

Your problem with the water hose has a simple answer. (The guy who brought the canister showed it to you.) To stop the water, you just have to raise the hose end above the water level in the cannister. In order to "start" the water again, lower the hose end level below the water level in the canister. No need to pinch and tie the hose like you do, just hang it somwehere higher. Gravity will do that for you. Also, i saw you tried to use the smaller and longer hose. It won't work with a hose that is not straight, and has loops on it. I really appreciate the courage you have to start this project all alone, off grid, in the middle of nowhere. Please keep posting vids!

Υοu should NEVER prune olive trees in the summer! Unless you want to cut it down. All the tree juices will bleed of the cuts and the tree will probably die in the heat of the Greek summer.

@@joeeigo9820No! Absolutely no! He is right. We never prune olive trees in the summer. Farmers may cut some branches for the goats. They don't do regular pruning. I grew up on an farm with olives and pistashio trees. My father, my grandfather, we now, never pruned olive trees in the summer. Especially in places where it doesn't rain enough, it shouldn't be done. This is something I am hearing for the first time. It would be good to be careful with the advices we give.🌺

    • @user-bs2ni5pg3g
      @user-bs2ni5pg3g 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

@@joeeigo9820 The only trees that can be pruned in the summer in the Greek area and its climate, are citrus fruits. And we do this carefully. That is, in the case where there are sick citrus fruits trees and they must be removed from the rest of the healthy ones.
However, olive trees do not produce fruit every year. If they are pruned in the summer and because the summer in Greece in the last decade reaches October, the new young shoots will be burned by the strong sun, as they are tender and sensitive to weather conditions. This has a high chance of happening. So we gain nothing, as we will have to wait next spring for new shoots. In addition, we may cause damage to the tree. The search for and replacement of the old varieties of olive trees, with new ones more resistant to the heat of the Greek summer, is already being discussed. "Therefore let us be careful, that we may have."

A very challenging project for one person, particularly working in the heat, but hopefully you have resources to obtain some assistance and equipment. Looking forward to seeing how you transform the property and perhaps eventually manage to harvest olives too.

A new lamborghini tractor, that neighbor is doing pretty well financially :-) Agree with him to consider buying as large a tank as you can house, it'll be useful in any case, perhaps even put a small roof over it to protect it a bit from the sun and channel the rain water you capture on that roof to help keep the tank topped off in the long run.I would also look into buying a Silky Forester saw, you would be able to easily prune branches from the ground rather than having to climb into the tree which is a health and safety concern but also harmful to the tree. Lastly, I probably would have left the branches on there until later in the year because a lot more energy is currently stored in the branches and leaves than in the dormant winter period. We're also contemplating moving 3 or 4 olive trees so i'm particularly intrigued how that will turn out. We live in Italy and olive trees are protected so you need permit to move trees, even if within the same parcel or grove.
