Very good video, but some things I’d like to add is, the vr-4 trim only ever came in a manual 5spd for earlier gens, and 6spd in later gens. The 3000gt also has 3 facelifts, 1991-1993 had popups, 1994-1998 had the fixed headlights, and the 1999 also had fixed headlights but the front turning marker was moved up near the headlight, and the headlights looked slightly different.

Also there's a 3rd SOHC N/A 6g72 version that was used in later base models, might have just been in the Stealth, can't quite recall. Also I very strongly disagree with him on the interior and suspect he hasn't been in one, or at least not a decently maintained example. It's night & day compared to a lower end car of the era like a DSM, they were more grand tourer than sports car- not the other way around. I daily drove mine as well as crossing state lines routinely on 3 hr drives and was perfectly comfortable doing so...wouldn't want to in a DSM...

not bashing on you but i’ll point out all of the mistakes in the vid because i own one. base model 91-96 came with sohc v6 engines with around 180 hp (slow as hell) and the sl trim had the dohc v6 with 222 hp through every year of each make. next, the vr-4 is a big ol’ boat, it doesn’t handle poorly, but it definitely doesn’t handle like a dream. the other problem with the vr-4 is that almost every time the all wheel steering and active aero break, or stop working (most people delete them to save weight). another thing i want to point out is pricing, if you look in the right places you can find vr-4’s wayyyyy under 20k, (fb marketplace mainly) in good condition too! also, if anyone reading this is planning on getting into a 3s platform just remember this - base is slow as fuck but looks cool, the sl trims are actually pretty quick cars considering they only weigh around 3300 lbs compared to the vr4’s 3800 lbs, and also the fact that they have more than 210 hp helps too, and lastly the vr4’s are a bitch to take care of sometimes (you might be lucky and have no problems) but if you’re willing to fix vr4 problems, then its definitely an awesome platform (not trying to stray people away, just saying) OH, and one more thing, the aftermarket community for every make/model is not that big really at all.

    • @rejectedopinions
      @rejectedopinions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gonna fix your mistakes.
91-96 stealth base was the sohc
      91-96 stealth R/T was DOHC
91-96 stealth R/T TT was DOHC twin turbo
91-96 3000gt base and SL had DOHC
      91-96 3000gt VR-4 was DOHC twin turbo
      97-99 3000gt base had SOHC
      97-99 3000gt SL was DOHC
97-99 VR-4 was DOHC twin turbo
First Gen (91-93, the pop up headlight ones) had a bit less horsepower than 94 onwards, can't remember exactly how much but I think it was about 20hp lower.
Other than that you're spot on, 3sx is one of the only aftermarket manufacturers left from my knowledge

I was lucky and got a almost perfect condition 3000gt (1998), and it works as a daily, if and only if the previous owners took care of it. I loved my 1991 3000 GT SL which I got in 1995 Orlando, Florida. Then life happened, got married and then in 2006 I bought a 1993 3000 GT VR-4 and let me tell ya. . going from a 222HP 3KGT SL to a 300HP 3KGT VR-4 Twin Turbo was night and day. All Wheel Steering, Active Aero, ECS.. it was so fun to drive and the car still gets looks. Those were the days. Great video!

I own a 95 VR4 with 50k miles. She drives like a brand new Cadillac. She sounds great, looks great and feels great. The one thing you got wrong in this video was the cupholder thing. They do have cup holders. The misconception probably stems from the fact that the cup holders are their own piece, separate from the car, that sits in the center console. Holds 2 cups. The only crappy thing is, if you have cups in the cup holders, you have to drive stick with two cups right behind your arm lmao.

Don't forget about the active aero system. It had an air dam on the bottom front bumper that would come down and aide with downforce in combination with the rear active spoiler. The active suspension system. The active exhaust system. And the twin turbo all-wheel-drive 3000GT VR4 and stealth RT twin turbo was never offered an automatic. Although the GTO in Japan and Europe I believe did.

couplethings, 1: there where three stages in the 3000gt life, the pop ups, the fixed headlights, and the last year with the 99 front end, the 99 had the "battle wing" for the vr4 model. there where 2 engines until 96 i belive, then they made a sohc version, so twin turbo, dual over head cam and single over head cam. they also made it in 5 speed until 96 where they added the 6 speed for the vr4.

Also the n a base models do have some decent tuning potential they carry the same engine and bottom end. The heads are different but you can with some effort TT convert the base model. Also the base model weighs about 700-800lbs less than a vr4 and less electrical gremlins. And you can fully build one as an all-motor build.Extremely rare I think I have the only 1 that's currently running and driving.

Funny thing is I wanted either a 3000GT or a 1960s American muscle car for my 1st car back in highschool. My partents bought me a first gen Mustang. And I daily drove it for almost 8 years now. And its real unreliable to the point where now I wanna sell it for a fun, reliable Japanese vehicle. I like how the 3000GT and 3 and 4G Eclipse look but especially nowadays Mitsubishi coulddn't hold a candle to Honda or Toyota for quality. And then I found out about Honda Accords with manual transmissions which are rare but still easier to find than Eclipses in manuals. When doing my reseach into 7th gen Accords with the V6 engine and manual they weigh like 500lbs less than the 3KGT, they have a HUGE gas tank which is great for the highway, the can sound good with a good exhaust and since its a Honda I shouldn't have to do much to it to keep it running if I got a good one to begin with. I wanna have it thoroughly inspected before I buy it but I have seen Accord V6 manuals from like 1800 bucks to 12,000 depending on condition or year. I think it would be worth it as a daily driver. I also didn't want to be forced to use 93 octane gas so I didn't want a turbo.

i think these prices in the video might be subject to american $ , for a Mitsubishi GTO in Australia your looking at 40k-60 k for a well looked after example

Yeah, in Europe the SLs go for 9-18k and vr4 at around 20k. I also have to say that I've never saw one with my eyes, and in my country (Spain) there are only about 15 on sale between all the online websites

@@markroden I disagree. That 'thing' isn't a 3000GT anymore nor it keeps the status the model has today - a classic sports car. It's just another boring tuned car that could belong in a Fast & Furious film.

FYI, not trying to be a dick here, but the Z15A chassis designation mainly describes the face lifted models and later, with the twin turbo cars wearing Z15A designation being a 1994 Mitsubishi GTO MR (light weight) model. Hard top spyder (2nd gen) models also wore the Z15AM badge being turbocharged. If you had an N/A single cam base, or an N/A twin cam SL, the car wore chassis designation Z11A, and for reasons unbeknownst to me and many others the Japan only all wheel drive N/A GTO SR wore a Z15A chassis badge BEFORE face lifted 2nd gen models became available….. I think it has something to do with the Options on any particular car that separated a Z15A from a Z16A, but for the record my 1st gen 91’ VR-4 is in fact, Z16A. 👍🏾

The easily removable ashtray doubles as a cup holder; sadly there's no ashtray holder. There's no helping that engine bay though. Parts for the thing are insane; calipers for example cost $600/ea new; and that's if you can find them. It is surprisingly comfortable as a dd; and that's coming from someone who's 6'3. I wish I had the time to get my tt back in good shape.
