I have daily driven close to 400,000 km over 20 years with a couple of these cars. First was a Stealth R/T and second was Stealth T/T. Neither of them required much in the way of repairs, but I did not beat the shit out of them and kept them stock. The tech stuff is actually pretty reliable. The stuff that failed was all either age-related (ECM, wiring, and connectors) or failed modules due to water damage from a leaky hatch seal. My current 93 T/T has almost 300,000km on it, 2/3 of which were put on by me and the original ECS shocks still work great and don't leak, the active exhaust valve still works, and the 4WS still works fine too. I have been hoarding hard-to-find parts for a few years now and hope to drive this car for another 20 years! That being said, the day it is worth 30 grand I am selling it.

haven't even made it four minutes into the video and caught that he said the Z16A is the first generation that came FWD at first. Z16A just means it is AWD with 4WS - it could be a early or late car with or without turbos. Also the ECS doesn't have sensors on each wheel and it does not raise and lower the chassis - it has a g sensor in the main ECS ECU and it stiffens up the struts depending on driving conditions.

I had a 1992 vr-4 , absolutely loved it. to this day its been my most favorite car i;ve owned and i am almost 60 and ad a few vehicles in my life. Personally i never really had any issues with mine other than minor stuff. I did get it up to 159 miles per hour beside another vr-4. We actually pasted a sheriff car on our side of the road but we were already topped out and they were never catching us ! The car would do almost 130mph in 3rd gear and lurch forward when changed in to 4th. Once got behind a 1994 corvette on a curvy road and had to stomp my brakes in the curves to keep from rear ending it, the last and sharpest curve i actually went around it in the left lane and left it in the rearveiw mirror. I pulled off the road down a ways and he stopped and called me a liar when i told him it was a v6. The 4 wheel steering destroyed the vets horse power in those curves. I love theses cars and missed my badly !! I sold it on Ebay to a guy that put it in rod ralley races and did get pictures of it during some of theses races which was cool !! I still browse for theses cars at times but getting tool old to get down in to them theses days but a man can dream of those glory days !! Thanks for the video and bringing back those fun days in my mind !

I was 10 in 1993...The Stealth/3000GT was my Dream car at that age. I remember getting a Viper model kit for a bday present one year, and liking it, but being let down that it wasn't a Stealth lol. As an adult, I can see why they were scary to own. But it's all those features that put them over the top for me too. I wasn't aware of the Skyline until Gran Turismo, and I remember hating that car because it was considered to be a "better" car than the 3kGT lol. Love em both.

Nice video. A couple things though. You're talking like it couldn't compete against the RX7/300z/nsx/supra, but the 3000GT actually outsold them all. Additionally, It was quite robust, definitely not unreliable if left stock and serviced as directed.
The AWS system turns the rear wheels in phase (same direction) at the front wheels during high speed cornering. The large combat wing was only on the 1999 Turbo models.
Lastly, performance was not all that different between 93 and 94. The extra 20hp the 2nd gen got, they simply removed a small restrictor in one of the boost solenoid nipples. You can safely "convert" a 1st get to get the extra 20hp by removing it. Takes 30 seconds and a paperclip.
Partway through 92 they started giving the DOHC models forged internals and some other beefed up stuff, like the output shaft.

My father had the non-VR4 model in red that he bought new in 1996. I was there with him the day he bought it. He originally went to the dealership to see the VR4, which I remember at the time as being lime-green. He had that thing until about 2018 when he traded it in on a 2008 Aston Martin V8 Vantage.....which he then totaled 6 months later. But before he got rid of it, that car only had one major problem in all that time, and the dealership covered it completely at no charge (had to have the engine rebuilt due to faulty pistons). It was also always the nicest car in any parking lot it was parked in. It's definitely a car that, if you took care of it, it would always look good in any era. He kept his stock; never did one upgrade to it, and always kept it garaged.

Here's what I can say about a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000gt SL which is what I drive, it is super fun insanely capable but it does have a lot of potential that Mitsubishi didn't work into, here's what I think would improve it which is what I plan on doing, they should have made it rwd from the factory and had the engine not be transverse it would make it a dream car to own and probably would've been remembered more fondly if they did that, second they definitely could've found a way to cut down on weight, like maybe not make it a 2+2 and leave the cargo area completely flat or have no rest seats and make the car shorter, good power but it is a heavy car, the front bumper could have looked a little more aggressive the rear of the car is just perfection, last little pet peeve I can think about is just the insane amount of clips and screws there is to get to things for the interior lol, other than that I think this car is perfect, the interior is minimalist and very driver focused, the DOHC engine that came with the car does amazing and it revs all the way to 7k which is insane, the gearing is set up very race like, even in 5th gear the rpms are above 3k at around 65mph, and the brakes are pretty darn good too, definitely could use a big brake kit tho.

Put over 200,000 miles on the '95 when the #1 turbo blew and I traded it in on the '99, which I put on around 60,000 miles on and sold it online for $38K (almost broke even and had one fabulous ride). Since then I have had an BMW M6 and currently drive a '21 Audi RS7 but neither was simply more fun than the 3000GT VR4. The sole reason for selling the Mitsubishi was that my wife had back problems and just couldn't get in/out of the car and I was worried about even a minor crash and having her get stuck, sigh.

This was a time when the Eclipse(and its sister cars from Eagle and Plymouth) was popular, smaller, lighter, and quicker, and you could get the awd for much less than the 3000GT VR4--which was very expensive at that time. Since then Mitsubishi has become a granny-car company. What a shame.

I made the most power out of a SL with the least aftermarket parts. I ported and polished heads, intake, bypassed coolant on TB, and only had a aftermarket air filter, and pully making 200 to wheels and over 260hp on the crank with the stock exhaust and cat. 3SX made 189hp with their exhaust headers, cams, and intake. So I made more power than thair NA build. My 3000GT SL was a little faster than a 350Z.

I still have a 95 3000gt VR4. With 4 bolt mains. The good engine. Unmodded. Original turbos still work. 170,000 miles on it. But I have issues. Air conditioning is one. It does not work and is not repairable. Disc brakes are no longer in supply. Can not get calipers. Have to upgrade to a big brake after market kit. Now you will encounter fitment issues with after market wheels. Other than that the car still runs fine and is a joy to drive. And it turns heads every where. Many people think it is a Ferrari. I go to car shows with it a lot. I see very rare cars at these shows like a 29 willey wipet. But some cars like 69 dodge charger or 69 Firebird, there are multiples of them. 56 vette. Lots. 55 chevy lots. Even Ford Model A 2 or 3 at a show. But the 3000gt VR4. Mine is always the only one. Another dude brings his Supra. He is also a loner. We stand out as super rare. And to find one in good working condition is even rarer.

I built a ‘91 Stealth to the max in the early 2000’s and every piece of tech aside from the all wheel steering was ditched and gutted. The leftover buttons were great for "stealth" settings with high/low boost and fuel maps. I ended up making my own electric cutout to a muffler because I lived in Chicago, and they weren’t making single side exhausts at the time. I did however love the Stealth’s flip up headlights. They had a thin lens that seemed useless, but you’d trick the pop-up switch to a variable and when left down the lens would slight up giving it a nice look. However, It was NOT good for actual night driving where there’s no city lights. I was always disappointed that I sold the car. It had everything you could do from fully built engine and transmission to turbos and full twin pump fuel system. I honestly wish I had found the project 15yrs later since the technology wasn’t nearly as good for tuning as it is today, but all the "street" tuning sessions were a literal blast. Definitely better than a dyno session. Street tune got me to 726AWHP on low boost, and just shy of 1000hp on high overspooling my turbo setup and causing the rear turbo seal to leak. I fixed the turbo and bought larger turbos but never got to install them and hit that grail 1000+hp before parting with the car. It was fun to drive modestly and kinda terrifying on our shit roads when the boost punched. I’ll always regret selling it, but I regret not buying my friends mint Targa TT Supra for only $25k with 80k miles when I could’ve more. I hope everyone finds a project they can labor over and learn to love the way I did with the 3000/Stealth.. because honestly that thing was kinda a pain in the ass to work on and I went through 2 transmissions before building one.. they were fragile AF, and the transfer case was terrible for the early years, so you’d have to find a steel one to replace the older aluminum ones. But it was all fun 😊
