@@theyoungsphoto definitely going to get one, you know I can’t pass up a good Canon release 😂 joking aside though, the c400 looks like on paper the perfect do it all camera for me
I still prefer the FX9 (Variable ND, true xlr ports, shoulder ready, evf, great image quality...). And with the tiny FX3 as your b cam (for gimbal shots, tiny spaces, interviews, when you want to be discreet), you are good to go. But yes this camera looks amazing too, I understand why you are saying that (especially for the 24-105 2.8)
@@Yupthereitismcurious why you think fx6 is better this has better resolution for stabilizing , better recording formats, and canon colors nicer. The lenses have always been legendary
This is a real workhorse of a camera. You can’t ask for much more at that price. The rf 24-105 f2.8 on this will be such a nice package. Great job Jake and co, your productions are so on point and genuine, ‘camera reviewers’ - take note!

It’s good having full disclosure about videos like this. Sadly sounds like Insta360 just recently got busted paying for reviews but asking for creators to not make those disclosures.
Gotta love the competition! FX6 setting Canon on their backfoot forcing them to come back with this incredible price-performance package. And with that new 24-105 it's a killer doc combo. Well done. The only thing I would love to see is a proper EVF. And an awesome video as always, guys, cheers!
I've loved Canon for years, switched to Sony in 2023 but could've stayed with Canon if the C400 was available. If RF glass becomes available from more manufacturers I may come back to Canon. Love love all of your videos CVP. I've been in video almost 20 years and learn about 10 things every time I visit this channel. Thank you!
Yes Canon! This seems like a really great option and for a reasonable price. Would be interested in renting one for bigger projects to go along with my C70
13:57 looks like the C400 has a native 3:2 sensor, and it looks like the NDs cover the full sensor too. It's currently only using a 17:9 crop of the sensor though. Any chance we'll see open gate recording?
I am shooting canon eos cinema cameras since 2018 starting with the c200, now C300mk3 and c70 as b cam. I was anticipating and craving a new flagship canon cinema camera, but tbh for me I don't have a need in buying the C400 unfortunately. Especially the lack of DGO and dynamic rage compared to the C300mk3. I really, really hope that Canon comes out with a C700mk2 esque, 20-25k€ Burano/V-Raptor Competitor, as im craving (even) better image quality. I know, im being pretty picky here, but I feel a little bummed frankly. Nonetheless it seems to be an awesome camera especially for that price point, but not worth the upgrade if you own c300mk3 and c70 (with speed booster) for me at least. Thank you for that superb review! Cheers!
Almost there. I think (at least for me) folks want better dynamic range, and anamoprhic height of a sensor. It would have been great if it was full frame (24x36mm) DGO, even at 4k, with much better DR. Decent price, but I won't be upgrading.
If you consider adding the handgrip and a V-mount battery to the Burano, the C400 is near a quarter of its price. I honestly think this camera is a Burano killer. Sony would have to drastically reduce the price of the Burano and/or add some features to it, like to include the handle without extra cost, add internal X-OCN S, maybe even sell it with a G-Master lens included in the price of the body.
Fx6, better low light, masses of lens options, lower cost body, lower cost lenses and variable ND is a game changer that can not be glossed over like this review did. Sony has nothing to worry about here, and that's before the FX6 ii or FX3 ii come out, IMO.
Thank goodness for making another C400 launch video 🙌🏼 much more in depth and straight to the point to be honest. Also, Canon forgot to mention about internal NDs, fortunately they are still included 😅
@@rossdanielart It's an RF mount cine camera in a cube body that comes with all the accessories for a reasonable price. Like yeah I too would like it to bring more cutting edge stuff like global shutter, internal 32 bit flot audio, etc etc, but then it would be 15k, I'm sure that camera is also coming btw. For someone like me that is shooting on R5C but wants to move to cine-style bodies and keep the R5C as B-Cam, this is basically perfect and at a price point I can actually consider. Whereas a 15/20k body is just out of the question for me and then I would've probably gotten a Pyxis or something instead. I didn't want to invest in 4/5 year old cameras as my new main cam, there were no options with RF besides the C70 for me and I was feeling meh about that camera, whereas I really want this one bad.
In the future with over and under exposure tests, it would be great to see compressed 10 bit footage vs raw. When I first saw your results, I was pretty underwhelmed with the sensor performance, but Gerald Undone has noted that modern Canon cameras (R5 Mark II for example) have MUCH better in-camera noise reduction than what can be achieved easily in Davinci Resolve. Basically, I wouldn't use Canon's raw in the C400 and R5 Mark II, but it works great on the C70 because of the DGO sensor. However, when shooting compressed, the C400 and R5 Mark II get a lot closer to the performance of the C70-only just slightly behind. Anyway, great review as always. I'm probably going to upgrade from a C200 soon (talk about noisy raw footage LOL) so all of these reviews are very helpful.
I love the fact that you can have a LUT on the monitor but still measure exposure in RAW and hate that you can’t do that on a Sony. Finally Canon are competing with Sony and here’s hoping they make inroads into Sony domination - I would switch so fast back to Canon if they started becoming more widely used.
Excellent video! Very informative and some good points here. Currently a R5C & R5. Looks like a brilliant upgrade, can’t quite justify the cost of upgrading just yet as I’m pretty happy with my current setup.
If sony had just included in body compressed raw the c400 wouldn't be any worry. But the fact that i need to strap multiple things on to my FX9 and turn it into a tank to get raw is really making me look at the c400.
I have two BMPC6K pros for interviews and a Lumix S5Mk2 for gimbal work. But for run and gun I always grab my old trusty C200. It just works, the pictures look great and I love the ergonomics. Please can you compare with the Black Magic G2 and 12K. Great video, thanks.
Seems on par with the FX6, not way better, just slightly better with internal raw, triple base iso and open gate. FX6’s eND and rolling shutter performance is still superior.
@@JojoJoget rolling shutter is good enough. If for you raw internally is not a big deal... It is... 6k, and open gate, are also very big deal for real work, opening anamorphic behind 1.33 wich is not very great
Fair play to ye for this video. I'm a bit more interested in it now after struggling through Canon's boring as hell presentation. Would've loved to see that they used the DGO sensor, but maybe that had to be the trade off for the triple base iso? And I'm a bit disappointed to hear that the autofocus improvement isn't as big as I'd hoped for. Still, thanks for your thorough breakdown which actually answers the questions we all have.
13:30 Am I understanding properly that autofocus only works up to 60fps in slow/fast modes? I asked on B&H if there are any modes where autofocus was disabled or only partially worked and their response was “At this time Canon does not show any frame rates or resolutions that would impede the Canon C400s autofocus capabilities. However, the camera has not yet been released, and this info may change”
I hope someday to work with Canon. I really feel like they are closest thing to Apple in the camera space. Although I am an Android and Windows user but I still am impressed by what Apple can make😊
Is the C400 a Red Komodo X killer? Secondly, if you had to choose only 1 camera between the Red Komodo X and the C400, which-one would you choose and why?
Such a great rundown! At 13:15 you discuss something not being well publicized or mentioned elsewhere that I've seen, that you can shoot 4K 120fps compressed while using the whole full frame image raster, but the example shown says it is in the S35 mode cropped. Just to confirm which is it?

The main thing that is making me want a C300 still is that DGO sensor. I'm honestly shocked that didn't add that but like you said, they may be saving it for the magical C500 Mark iii
Why did they make one CF Express memory card slot, can we say forget about the copy? 4K 120p only for the S35 is strange for me too, so a lot of questions to the manufacturer?

Great video guys! Amazing to get through all of that in 48 hours. Considering selling my Komodo-X after watching that. This ticks a lot of boxes, trying to think of why I'd keep the KX instead??
Really nice review! 2 questions I think I didn't hear mentioned are what's the time for black shading and how many audio tracks can be recorded simultaneously. Also if recording in H265 would drop the audio from 24 to 16 bit as in the C70. Thanks!
We have an open day with the camera on Friday, I will make a list of questions from the comment section and get all the answers then and post them in a pinned comment on this video! Thanks for watching, Jake

Canon claims 16 stops of dynamic range for the camera despite it appearing to have less latitude than the C300(In the highlights and shadows). Looks to have about 8-9 usable stops with all the noise at -4 stops.
how do you come to the conclusion that this are 8-9usable stops? To me it looks like +-3 are clean stops and -4 "pretty noisy"at lower base, okayish noisy at higher base, +4 skin alredy clipped. So i conclude at least 6 clean stops, and 7stops at higher base, less than 8 without loosing detail or am i missing something here.
@@juliusherth White skin isn't exposed at middle gray, but at about one stop over. So the +4 stops is actually +5 stops on skin. It looks about 1/2 stop over exposed on the skin, so give the camera 4.5 stops in the highlights. The amount of acceptable noise in shadows is subjective and the test isn't granular enough(1 stop jumps are pretty large) to say what the cut off of acceptable noise is... Maybe 3 stops maybe 3- 2/3 stops. Who knows.
Such a good review! This will be my next camera! If you make a want to buy video: FX6, FX9, Komodo(-X), C70, C300 mkIII, Blackmagics new Cinema cam if available.

Agreed, pretty standard modern full frame performance. The value must be in the body
Doesn't surprise me. Canon always lies about their DR.
how do you come to the conclusion that this are 8-9usable stops?
Who knows.
I would love to see a comparison between this and the blackmagic pixis
Is that Blackmagic's new cinema 12K?
@@paulct91 thats the ursa, the pyxis is the 6k box version of the pocket full frame
