Since there are some so deeply affected by my de-saturated talking head, let me say this. I DO NOT care about a youtube talking head commentary video. 😂 I did not shoot in log, im in a little tiny room, and i didnt change the WB before i recorded. So i just de-saturated the image because i didnt want to record the whole thing again. It’s just TH-cam guys. 😂😂
You are lost in time. This kind of video is so "2015". The community is now much more mature and better informed. So do not expect much love for this BS-content. ;)
@@JustinPhillip The C80 looked so good but CineD just released the dynamic range numbers (for c400 but same sensor) and in raw without NR it only has 10.5 stops. I try not to get too hung up on numbers but this is less than the FF6 (11-11.5 stops DR with NR disabled).
Amen my brother, why CAM A is the greatest, two days after: why CAM A is trash and you need to upgrade to CAM B I unfollowed all the sponsored fanboy channels and started following people which are relevant in the video industry, doing the real job
FX6 owner here and previous C200 owner. The C80 looks great and totally agree that it has a few benefits over the FX6 (which is now 4 years old). However, so tough to justify changing systems, mainly because of lenses. Given the choice, I'd probably take a C400 because I prefer the body style and more RAW codec options. Keen to see how you go with it!
As a hiker/climber and filmmaker its conflicting. So many cool cameras but the formfactors are horrible so I gotta stay with my FX3 for my hiking trips haha.
My $0.02 is that transferring from SD cards at a maximum of 300 MB/s will get frustrating very quickly. Like VERY quickly. It baffles me whenever a potentially amazing piece of new gear sabotages itself from birth. CF Express type B should have been mandatory from an engineering perspective, although then there would be no excuse for not being able to do full frame slow motion in RAW. It would be too competitive with the C400, I guess...
I mean at the peak of 300 (which I am not sure there are many cards that can sustain) 300MB/S is a Terabyte of data every 45 min-hour. It isn't fast but it isn't egregious either. For that you get 8 hours of video at 300Mb/s, so a full day's shoot can be backed up in about an hour. Plus for more mobile crews, you don't need to worry about dongles and adapters nearly as much, plus the price per GB is MUCH cheaper on SD cards than CF Express cards. And if none of that works for you, you can always record video through the SDI port.
@ericlippe - Time is money man. I don't think it's a stretch to include at least ONE CF Express option (even type A) along side the SD cards. Even my A7IV has a CF Express type A slot. I've been on many shoots that require quick edit turnarounds in a couple of hours (event highlights and such) and, regardless of how many wranglers you have on hand, watching an SD card transfer for 45 mins is maddening. Of course there are other options like recorders and SDI feeds, but I don't want to jump through hoops to save valuable time in an age where having a high-speed option is commonplace. It's a massive oversight, plain and simple.
@@gregnewland2651 That is true. Honestly I didn't think it was that much time when I first looked it up. Personally, I don't think mixed-media is the most professional solution, because it immediately means you can't read/write the same speed to both cards, meaning you can't usually record the same file to both places. At >2x the price (comparing UHS-II 1tb to CFX-A 1TB), I find that CF Express A just isn't worth it for lower-budget shoots, and I feel like higher budget shoots should be able to run an SDI recording option and use the SD cards as backup. I'm a professional as well, and while I get that time is money, an hour on set is not the same kind of work as letting your computer automatically back up its files for an hour. I personally shoot with a canon R6II instead of something like an R5 because I find mixed media to be a detriment more than a benefit. With photos, the 2x SD card slots are perfection, but even with video, I either use the SD ports or save it to a recorder if I need the fast turnaround. I'm not trying to defend Canon here- no company earns my advocacy without a paycheck first- but I think that some smaller production houses will see the 2 SD card slots as a benefit, not a reason to hesitate.
All I really want is 6k, internal NDs, good autofocus, and good low light in a small form factor. If this camera were smaller, it’d be a no-brainer. I hope the next iteration of the FX3 has internal NDs.
In your experience can you get the Sony color science to match the canon or is there always a little bit that can’t be finagled just right? Also I heard the 10 stops of ND are much more useful than Sonys equivalent smaller range. And that while Sonys auto adjusting and transitioning NDs are very nice, if you have multiple cameras it poses quite a problem, leaving canons old fashioned stops, at the end of the day, more functional
I think it would be tedious to match any cameras that are from a different manufacturer. In terms of cutting narrative footage from a wide to a CU. If the wide is done on a canon and the CU on a sony, its gonna be a little difficult, but imagine a medium shot on a canon and the CU on sony, very difficult to match IMO. And re: the NDs, yea i mean canons are the equivalent of real NDs in a matte box, but behind the lens, which is even better. But the auto variable ND in the FX6 is amazing for documentary auto exposure
@@JustinPhillip thanks for the feedback! It does sound tedious and difficult to match yeah. As for the NDs..oof! Sounds like they both have their uses! Hopefully Canon or Sony upgrades their systems soonishly so sacrifices needn’t be made 😅
Hello and thank you for your content, Justin, you help us a lot in our development. I have a question. In your video "How to Use a Light Meter for Cinematography - Part Two," at 6 minutes and 13 seconds, I can see that you're using an Osee monitor, but you're shooting in 6K on your Red. Knowing that it only accepts a signal up to 4K60, how did you manage this? I'd like to pair it with the C400. The same gosse for your SmallHD monitor, how do you manage for him too? Thank you once again for the knowledge you share with us. See you soon!
Thank you for your response. I was looking for a production monitor that supports up to 6K to use El Zone with the C400, but unfortunately, they are all limited to 4K30. So we dont have any solution to shoot 6k with a el zone monitor lets get a sekonic i guess. @@JustinPhillip
I never understood the Sony hype, over sharpened, over de-noised, digital looking footage. I’m convinced that 90% of Sony users have never used any other camera brand to actually see the difference. I switched from Canon to Panasonic, and now I’m thinking of going back to Canon.
I shoot sony, but i do agree with you. But with good care in post, and seen in 720p in toilets on smartphones, nobody sees rhe difference. 80% if videos are seen that way (well not only in toilets, but got me). And fx6 has so many advantages over the competition, this is such a versatile camera. Well now with the c80, canon finally came here, but they are 4 years late. And still lacking variable nd. Which sony has since 8years with fs5.
@@Studio23creation The variable ND never bothered me. I have internal IDs on the C500 mark II bodies and that is fine, plus I get the benefit of the superior colour science. That said, I usually shoot Arri and, let's be fair, Sony and Canon, they're not getting close to the image out of these.
1:45 i think we watched different videos from cvp on the c80, beacause they actually state with their own voiceover that the fx6 handles highlights better =))
Yea i disagree tho. Look at the shot. People say the FX6 is blown out? Looks opposite to me. With the C80 theres still detail on the people being backlit. On the FX6 they’re all full of CA and glowing
Tonality is better on the Canon, luminance values are equal, they both have clipped anyway. You are focused on the highlights zone, look at the image as a whole and clearly Canon image is better. The problem could come from a streaking sensor issue or maybe the coatings are better on the Canon lens…
I was a c70 user, loved that camera, shot lots of commercials with it… But in the last year or so I’ve pretty regularly felt I was outgrowing the camera, both in need and actual physical space. Lens motors, audio packs, time code generator, it all adds up. I’m sticking with the c400 instead this time, it’s a nice upgrade, but damn if the c80 announcement didn’t make it that much harder to lock in!
Great video, thanks for the review and totally agree with you on color science, that's why I've stuck with Canon. I'm just curious do you think switching to Canon would affect your ability to work on other collaborative projects, given how widely used Sonys are now? Or is that something not as big of a concern given the kind of work that you do or people you collaborate with?
When you shoot Canon RAW, you have to dial back the sharpening slider in their RAW dev tab. Canon for some reason pushes it up. Even shooting MP4, I would not add sharpening in post on a 6K sensor.
@@TJIzzy true which is one thing I wonder about with c80, but have also seen over sharpened non raw footage (and for that matter what looks like a lot of noise reduction)
C80 and C400 have everything I love about the Canon image in low light beasts. Amazing color science, filmgrain-like noise pattern, and internal raw now paired with Incredible low light, that’s a quadruple backflip.
6K60p RAW if you record to the Atomos. YOU may hate having an external recorder/display, but at least Canon is providing an option to squeeze out more performance. Also, will be interesting to see if the HDMI RAW output is RAW HQ or not. (Internally, it's ST or LT only.)
@@JustinPhillip And at least THIS time we are in agreement that a new camera has a significant enough improvement of IQ to be excited about. In the context of our BM Pyxis agree-to-disagreement, I would venture that a number of Pyxis pre-orders have been cancelled in order to switch to this. The $2500 difference in price gives one sooooo much more.
Only good thing is tripple base ISO. Other than that nothing impressive. Especially this weird shape ... RF mount with crazy prices of glass and lack of internal ND ... FX6 still seems to be better choice for someone who already have some e-mount glass. And seems we are going to get FX6 II this year.
@@meyerdigitalfilm I checked Canon webpage to see if it has internal ND, and there was 0 information about it. I guess it's a mechanical one? Or electronic like FX6 or Tilta Mirage pro?
1:49 Sony is known for pushing green in Skintones, not magenta. If that’s difficult for you to fix, switching might be a good option. The C80 has it‘s own flaws though. Biggest no gos imo: -No DGO sensor. Why? That was the reason people where buying the C70, for its dynamic range. -No CF express type B cards. -4k 60 with a super35 crop. because the had to habe a 6k sensor and now the readout is impossible. For what? In an industry that needs nothing more than HD tbh. That also means it’s not RAW. RAW is the full sensor readout. It’s just a less processed log file.
I'm just happy the C400 and the C80 exist. Four months ago, as a long time Canon user (I currently have C200 x 2 and a C300 MKII), I had written off Canon even still being in the cinema camera business anymore. I recently bought an FX6 specifically for one client who demanded I buy it to match their in house Sony cameras, and it's really cool for some things (the lower light performance and E VND are amazing as is the AF), but in many other ways, I hate it (build quality is so subpar compared to my Canons, no audio input on body, sub par LCD, bad colors, especially in skin tones, even with S-Cinetone). I'm not a fan of the C70 form factor, like you Justin, I've shot the C70 and the monitor hinge and chunky, bloated DSLR feel so the C80 I doubt I would like much more, but the C80 does add some cool new features. It'll be really interesting to see if the C80 and C400 can break the lock Sony FX cameras have on the freelancer camera market. When I get calls these days, they only ask for Sony, nobody has requested Canon in years. It'll be interesting to see Canon can claw back some market share from Sony in the low to mid level cine camera market. If you make documentaries or shoot event stuff, nobody will care if you shoot Canon but in the freelancer market, all I get asked for is FX9 and FX6 in LA.
@@rfilmprod9629 I don't yet have any cine primes for my FX6. But if I buy any, they will be in PL. I agree, buying good glass in PL mount should last forever. I have a set of Cine Primes in X mount for my Fujis and it bums me out I can't use them on my FX6 or C200/300 MKII.
Considering FX6 was released 4 (four) years ago, obviously a new camera will have better features and newer tech. Now i would want to see a successor to FX6 and how that will compare to this new C80.
I sold my C300MkII for the C70, it had all the stuff I liked from my C300MkII (internal NDs, ergonomically well laid out buttons, better menu system than Sony imo, and multiple audio inputs, plus could use my same batteries). But more importantly it was a smaller form factor, better for handheld and gimbals, had Dual Gain Output, and internal RAW. I'm still blown away by the picture quality with the C70 given how small the file sizes are compared to my R5. But I imagine 6K full-frame RAW will be a bit different. As for the slomo, that could be fixed via firmware down the line. I also wonder with the EF adapter, if there's going to be one without a speed booster now to use full frame.
Dude save the money and pay off the house or buy stock. Anything that has long term value. Gear has diminishing returns past the most basic level. Heck, I would wager you could shoot with a 5D Mark III and the client wouldn't care if it was rigged out.
Yeah you got a point there. I’ve actually told the past client that i was shooting on FX3 , (it was FX30 with metabones), no one cared or even knew the difference 😅
+1 on this point. Sure, it is worth upgrading gear IF you can benefit (increase profit, take on new projects you couldn't otherwise, etc.) from new features. However, many shooters never exhaust the capabilities of what they currently have, nor do they really utilize the upgrades new gear offers. We are easily convinced that better gear = better cinematographer. Just sayin'
I disagree. That will depend entirely on your business success really. There are people who don’t really need 6-10K cameras at the current state of their business, the more they grow, they will eventually. Cameras are just tools that can help you differentiate from your competitors. We invest in cameras that pay themselves in two o three months and stay in the studio making money for years. So if your business is in the need to upgrade, you need to know when. The when is important.
c80 limited dynamic range makes it hard to capture high-contrast scenes without losing important details in the highlights or shadows. Additionally, the lack of internal RAW recording forces users to rely on external recorders, complicating workflows and increasing production costs. Furthermore, the camera's low-light performance is subpar, and its basic image stabilization struggles to deliver smooth footage, especially during handheld shooting.
CVP Measured the C400 Sensor at 13.27ms in full frame mode and 8.71ms in super 35 mode. Since the C80 uses the same sensor it's likely the same scan times. The FX6 at 8.7ms rolling shutter in full frame is still superior, but it does have the advantage of only being a 4k sensor vs the Canon's 6k.
In the low light ferris wheel shots, the Canon is completely blowing out the yellow lights, where the FX6 is showing them as a rich yellow. If the lights were really yellow to the eye, it's a big fail for the Canon. If they were really white, then the Canon got it right, but I have a feeling that the FX6 got the color right, at least in this comparison. But I completely agree about the Sony skin tones pushing magenta/red. But that's a relatively easy fix.
Weird times for cameras these days. Hard to make a decision now if you’re a first time buyer. If I were to buy only one of the new Canon cameras, it would be the C400. If I could get both, it makes sense to have both. Two is one and one is none, and all that. For me, I don’t have any reason to switch from FX6 and FX3, especially knowing that I want an FX9 sized camera next, specifically for shouldering. Never really like building up my FX6 or FX3 for shoulder, so, a camera really designed for that sounds good to me. Plus I know that investment wise, the FX9 is what producers what for my market. They will not ever be going back to Canon, not unless they make a direct ergonomic and usability competitor to the FS7/FX9 somehow, but they just haven’t done that. The C400 isn’t it. I’m hoping to see the FX9II released sooner rather than later. I know this is taboo to say, but I like the look of Sony over Canon now too, because Canon is often oversaturated, giving the image a weird, mushy glow. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s just something weird, even though the skin tones are often better. And the Canon C400 demo film they made loooked like it was shot on a 5DII, then upresed with Topaz to me. I didn’t like it. PROAVTV put out some good demo footage though, so that made up for it. Usability wise, I just love the VND over old ND wheels. I have seen some C70 as B cam footage that paired great with the Alexa on a doc that made me almost want one, almost. Sony’s turn next!
@@JustinPhillip haha I hear ya. Yeah no telling when Sony will make their move. I’d be hesitant to buy now though unless you really need the gear like you were mentioning. Yes, canon just now catching up.
I would switch over to Sony if they had a good internal RAW codec that can be used in Resolve. FX3 is good, but I hate that it doesn't have professional exposure tools or internal ND's. If they could make a little bigger FX3 II with those things, that would be sick.
I have the 24 to 105 2.8 z from Canon and especially on the C70 with the crop is not the coolest thing in the world but it is more equivalent to Sony's lenses. I'm pretty sure if I was doing documentary work I would love using it a lot more. I do love shooting photos with it as it gives me so much flexibility.
For me the Tamron 35-150 f2 - 2.8 is a game changer over the FE 28-135 F4. Losing the 28 is worth the sacrifice to have f2-2.8 an they are about the same size
Im a Canon/RED/(wish Arri) guy & I don't think the highlights are better on the C80 vs FX6. Even the shadows seem to roll off better to black on the FX6 imo. I am not in love with Sony color still, but I feel like the C400/C80 is more of a camera for live events. If Canon had given us a full frame DGO with fast readouts, that would have sealed it for me. Btw, I think your monitor might not be calibrated correctly, skin tones look quite off.
haha yeah, i forgot to change my WB. but yes, i do agree about the DGO, that was a hit & a miss i think, a sacrifice they clearly made to compete with Sony's lowlight performance. Maybe a C70 for cheap might be the best doc camera atm for the used market price.
@@JustinPhillip I think that people who aren’t experienced enough yet think they need a certain camera to get good results. Basically anything with 10-bit & log now with a professional can get incredible results. Newbies don’t know how to color grade well, so they rely on the out of camera colors or LUT’s they buy. The only thing that can’t be changed that easy, is if a camera has terrible rolloff. It can be masked with highlight compression etc, but it’s harder.
I think ARRI has the best color science or Kodak film. RED is better than Sony, but just reducing magenta a tad on Canon gets me to a good place quickly. RED used to always push green/yellow, just like old Sony's. I think they did this because there was so much IR pollution on their earlier cameras. RED's R3D (RAW) is a really "thick" image, their RAW is better than anything else you can afford. If you can color grade, RED is great.
As a C70 owner and C400 pre order customer, I’d say it will depend of your line of work. If you need internal NDs, audio ports, fast non raw workflows and out of the box functionality go Canon. If you do narrative or your prime focus of your work is to deliver the best image for your editor, I’d say RED still has the edge.
I think you're going to see two or three new FX cameras in the next four months.... I have a feeling you might see something very similar to the C80. No hate but you talked about Canon color then show the most dull shots 🤣
Canon 'Color Science' is a giant gobble of myth created right here on TH-cam by wedding photographers turned "TH-cam professionals". No real DP even says that. Sony colors on FX series are pretty much the same as Venice (even though sensors, codecs, build and features vary) and Hollywood loves those Venice cameras and Canon is virtually non-existent. All we gotta know is Gareth Edwards is confident enough to use Sony FX3 for a $100M SciFi while we procarsinate and argue on TH-cam. Its funny how Justin here wants you to think "Sony Colors" are "high con and heavy saturated" because he forgot or didn't know RED was known for such look too but only because the filmmakers who early on popularized it used it in such a way. Color is whatever we make it look like. With so many log and RAW codes these days on prosumer cameras, I don't even think about colors until post coz its such a non-factor. And funny enough Sony colors are demonstrably more neutral and Canon tends towards magenta more because someone at Canon thinks it is more pleasing, which is fine. But I'm fine with either "colors" and can easily make them look the way I like.
Sony’s lineup is still selling extremely well, especially the Sony FX6. Remember, the FX6, FX3, and A7SIII all use the same sensor, so unless Sony has a new 6K or 8K sensor with the same if not better low light performance and 120P recording, I still think we are 1-2 years out from an update. That's a lot of R&D
at 6:40 how can you say C80 has better highlights rolloff? Not a Sony fan neither a Canon but you can clearly see on that image Sony behaves much better than Canon....less highlight clipping on the Sony and a warmer less contrasty look that is exactly the highlight rolloff.
@@JustinPhillip buy better cables. Also, I've had two sdi ports burn out on two different high-end devices. Teradek bolt 3000 and a Odyssey monitor recorder. Never had that happen with HDMi
Aye it's wild Justin... Canon may have won me over. I'm legit really thinking about it. This is from a forever Panasonic guy that still rocks with 2 GH5S's and a GH5.
The FX three is going to come out with global shutter and 6K and it’s gonna kick that right out of the market who wants a giant brick when you can have something is small and discreet and easy to put on a gimbal and film all day without your arms falling off
This is exactly what I have been thinking all day. All year I have been wanting to strip back my gear. Take less, have a smaller foot print, full frame IBIS. Screw-on ND filters don't really bother me, anymore they're no different than built-in ND's. I have a feeling as well that Sony is gonna drop a bomb and people are gonna be hyping that system.
Exactly. If this was released when FX3 came out they would have an argument but it will be sour grapes as soon as the fx3 mark 2 comes out around the corner.
Who would want an fx6 or the fx6ii? Those would be considered bricks as well. It all depends on the needs of the person. Some may want built in NDs, triple base iso, and internal audio. Different cameras for different purposes 😊
Having shot on the C70 a lot, it doesn't feel heavy to me. I am 6"4" though, so maybe for small guys its a problem? FX3 II really should get internal ND's and professional exposure tools, then it would be interesting.
I'm not sure I really get the better color science argument, I mean if you are using these cameras you most definetly are gonna color grade it. Also you mentioned the S-cinetone, I just don't see how anyone that is a cinematographer and not a youtuber would ever use anything but SLog. I do agree with all other points however, fwiw.
Sony needs a fx4. Small all in one body like c80 with needing to use top handle and remove the swivel side handle. These 2 things are a pain in the ass for gimbal use.
C80 + RF 24-105 F2.8 and a RF 15-35 f 2.8 and you are golden :P I own the two of the C70, R5C and R3... the new C80 looks super cool.. They fixed the baseplate, they made it full frame, they gave it SDI, they already fixed the screen when I send mine in and they switched the hinge and now they last, the screen got brighter... yeah they actually listened this time.. crazy times. But if you are in sony wait... we will see FX 6 mark 2 soon enogh
Hang on a second. You just showed C80 footage and compared the quality, but Canon introduced their new camera, and what about Sony? They're planning to introduce their new cameras too, which could be better than the C80. Maybe we should wait for them and then compare? It's strange to compare an older generation camera from one company with a newer one from another.
Actually, at 2:24, the sun is less blown out on the fx6 than the C80, so don't quite agree with you on that. But the C80 does seem to outperform in shadows and colors
2:23 The speaker at the concert, if you pause and look, Sony has better dynamic range, don’t know what he’s talking about, unless this is sponsored propaganda against Sony. Look at the details in the cloud. Sony has more details, while in canon, the sun is more overblown.
Hmm no variable nd, screen cant be moved to different positions on the body, handle doesn't rotate, no record/zoom button on top handle, weird shape for gimbal, no cfast. Those are quite serious quality of life issues, especially when shooting all day. The only real win for canon is the raw and 4k s35.
@@scottievee330All true, it comes down to what works for you. For me the physical ergonomics of the c80/c70 are a deal breaker and the image differences to the fx6 are negligible. If I need raw that means it's a bigger project which means I'm looking more towards RED or Arri but yeah to each their own. Keep shooting 😊.
I sold my main camera and was saving money for a new camera, enough to get the c80 (msrp) and for some reason The C80 made me just give up on getting a new camera. I will stick with my B cam (ZVE1). The more I shoot the more I realize that either I go big big (size) or go very small. I can't find a place for cameras like the C80 and even fx6. I'd take the fx9 instead. I'm not interested in internal raw, so I am biased. I also don't care that much for rolling shutter, but did you guys know that the ZV-E1 has the 6th best rolling shutter of any camera? A whole MS faster than the Arri Classic and mini LF but so is the iphone 15 hahahaha. How come that's not a selling point yet I hear people talk about rolling shutter all the damn time.
@@JustinPhillip Yes sir, the full rig (body, monitors, tranmitter, light, mics, followfocus, lenses) fit in my backpack. The stricter the place the more I strip it down. To be fair I've only taken in on 2 projects abroad as my main camera but each one lasted over a month so It's been through a lot.
😅I don’t own any of the camera this channel own. But I am also excited to see others put out camera to compete with Sony. I m just a Sony ZVE10 mkii owner and trying to learn the craft of cinema.
I shop my first wedding and hired a Sony shooter who set his white balance on manual and did not show up as early as I asked him to be. We ended up shooting the entire ceremony in the warmest white balance setting I've ever seen used on a camera. It took me a month and a half of coming home everyday and color matching the videos and dealing with Premiere Pro crashing to get the skin tones to match. Even worse was we had a discussion about log when setting up for the shoot and he told me he didn't want to shoot in log. Since this gig I have not been able to hire another shooter or scale the video side of the business....
Whoa! Yea non-raw is an issue for sure. Take this talking head for instance, there a couple people making jokes about the color, but i just de-saturated it for sake of time. (Because i didnt shoot in log and domt care enough about talking heads for youtube! 😂😂) but yes, always a PIA if not shooting in raw or log on ANY camera
@@JustinPhillip yeah one thing I have learned about youtube is you are never going to make everyone happy. When you create something if you are happy with it and it helps a few people, I think we can be satisfied as the creator.
There is still no reason to switch my FX6's to Canon, my clients are happy and I can pay my bills. Here in the UK and Europe you see a some Canon shooters who may be owner operators but Sony A,B or C cam jobs outstrip everything else by magnitudes and that simply isn't going to change. To be honest I do like the look of the C80 but switching makes little business sense especially with the price of Canon glass

This is nice. But for some reason, I just think that personally, I’m going to give it a good two years to wait to upgrade. I just think within two years we’re going to see the price range and camera image quality that’s going to really be out of this world. It’s really good now But 2 yrs will be the real game changer. Just my prediction.
Yeah but thats ad infinitum isnt it? Like we could easily have said that two years ago and then again four years ago. I mean its tech, its going to constangly be upgrading . But yea at some point there is a ceiling for me.
honestly If you're invested in the sony ecosystem this makes no sense lol, but if it psychologically helps you jump ships to canon go for it. The fx6 is a 4 year old body and using it as the benchmark to compare the c80 is honestly testiment to how good a 4 year old body is. I'm bsing here but since you have a RED it might make more sense to switch to a Nikon z6iii since it does in body 6k/60fps prores/n-raw at half the price lol
Imho, C80 & C400 are too close, also weird choice media for the c80… Canon could disrupt the market and send a clear message by just releasing the C400 at the FX6 price ! They would have sell like pancakes to those upgrading. Most Sony FX6 shooters are just waiting for the FX6 II ( November). If Sony uses the sensor of the A9 III, we’ll not see great Canon sales. Sony has just to update the sensor (A9III), xlr on the body, internal raw up to 60p and opengate and all kinds of requested ports. I even suspect they will trash the FX9, FX6 II will replace both FX6 & 9.
Not to be an edgelord and I know they're in a completely different class of camera but it's interesting how the Z6iii can do 60p 6k uncropped internal RAW and the C80 which is 3x more expensive cannot...
If i was in the business for this kind of camera i would skip the c80. I would go for c400 instead. Yes is a bit more expensive but the c80 just has too much compromises to make it cheaper. No cfexpress is a no no to me in 2024.

As soon as you pull the trigger on the C80, Sony releases their new lineup replacing the FX6 and the FX3. 😂😂😂😂😂😅
😂 you might be right
exactly ! FX6 is 4 years old already. so this is not ideal comparison, but of course its just a tool : if it works - then it works.
rumours has it that the new fx3 is being released this october, but it's still a rumour
lol exactly. The FX6 MII is going to completely change the game.
Faaaaacts. That’s exactly what I expect
Yea it as all sad but true. I forgot to mention the SD card issue
I'm not trying to defend Canon here- no company earns my advocacy without a paycheck first- but I think that some smaller production houses will see the 2 SD card slots as a benefit, not a reason to hesitate.
external SSD via usb-c also should be an option. My Sigma FP ha it so… 😂
I likes the way you think. I'm heavily invested in RF lenses and i'm liking what Canon is doing lately with C80 and C400
All I really want is 6k, internal NDs, good autofocus, and good low light in a small form factor. If this camera were smaller, it’d be a no-brainer. I hope the next iteration of the FX3 has internal NDs.
C80 + Bkackmagic assist ? What is the best way to get a better image, as well as save money on V90 cards?
guess so, the 5" version, 12G
I just change the output/input to 1080, is that what you mean? Very rarely do i need to monitor in 4K
Thank you for your response.
I was looking for a production monitor that supports up to 6K to use El Zone with the C400, but unfortunately, they are all limited to 4K30.
So we dont have any solution to shoot 6k with a el zone monitor lets get a sekonic i guess.

I'm just curious do you think switching to Canon would affect your ability to work on other collaborative projects, given how widely used Sonys are now? no its definitely a concern. it is something to consider for sure

@@JustinPhillip true and you have a good vintage lens situation.

1:49 Sony is known for pushing green in Skintones, not magenta. If that’s difficult for you to fix, switching might be a good option. The C80 has it‘s own flaws though. Biggest no gos imo:
-No DGO sensor.
All valid point!
100%
@@JustinPhillip Agree wholeheartedly! If you must park $ in tech, get better glass.
Love this Canon move indeed. Yet I think Sony is not done yet.
Considering FX6 was released 4 (four) years ago, obviously a new camera will have better features and newer tech. Now i would want to see a successor to FX6 and how that will compare to this new C80.
Sony not done yet??? Canon is 4 years late, and lacking variable nd. Sony is the biggest camera brand. So no, they are not done...
Well what about E mount lens choice....
Yea i talk lenses in the video
I also wonder with the EF adapter, if there's going to be one without a speed booster now to use full frame.
nice Evan!
@@urielsantistebanfilms Fair point. And $10k means different things to different people at the end of the day.
c80 limited dynamic range makes it hard to capture high-contrast scenes without losing important details in the highlights or shadows. Additionally, the lack of internal RAW recording forces users to rely on external recorders, complicating workflows and increasing production costs. Furthermore, the camera's low-light performance is subpar, and its basic image stabilization struggles to deliver smooth footage, especially during handheld shooting.
C80 definitely has internal raw. And the lowlight of the C80 is much better than the C70. Did you watch the video at all? 😂😂
They are just making shit up. Fake News I think they call it.

Just use what works for you. Well all have different use cases and circumstances.
Damn
@@JustinPhillip for additional context, the FX9 was measured at 22.2ms (a 6k full frame sensor) and the Burano measured at 18.9ms at 8K scan.
Great info! 🙌🏼
Global shutter in an FX3/30 style body is coming sooner than you think… and a huge upgrade to the image that may surprise you 👀
😳
Calm down. Sony gonna come out with their follow up FX3 FX6 FX9. They just letting everyone put their junk out first and then knock them down.
😂 my whole life is over reacting. Some people predicting sony might not drop for a while yet tho. Canon just slower to catch up
@@JustinPhillip haha I hear ya.
How about the Komodo X compared to C80 now that its cheaper? Most people say RED color science is still the best.
Yea higher bit depth, more colors available
Man this video looks like it was color corrected by a blind man
🤣🤣
* color blind*
Color is so subjective. I am not into heavy saturated, high con looks. Im fine with what i like
Canon 'Color Science' is a giant gobble of myth created right here on TH-cam by wedding photographers turned "TH-cam professionals".

I use S-cinetone for corporate clients. Ive never had a corporate client request Log.
Sony needs a fx4. Small all in one body like c80 with needing to use top handle and remove the swivel side handle. These 2 things are a pain in the ass for gimbal use.
C80 + RF 24-105 F2.8 and a RF 15-35 f 2.8 and you are golden :P
I own the two of the C70, R5C and R3... the new C80 looks super cool..
I don’t know. I’m happy with what my Panny S52X can do. Don’t really care what Sony or Canon do now.
Actually, at 2:24, the sun is less blown out on the fx6 than the C80, so don't quite agree with you on that. But the C80 does seem to outperform in shadows and colors
Buying all new lenses is not a problem ?
yupp, nail in the coffin, Can't let go of my Sony 28-135 power zoom
It’s all bs, unless you shoot for cinema release, the Lumix S5 II X its more than you need 😂😂😂
For real
Cinema release can be done on an iPhone long and you have a compelling story and lots of money for sets and stage ie production value.
2:23 The speaker at the concert, if you pause and look, Sony has better dynamic range, don’t know what he’s talking about, unless this is sponsored propaganda against Sony. Look at the details in the cloud. Sony has more details, while in canon, the sun is more overblown.
🤣 definitely not sponsored. Relax
As a c70 user who will buy the c80 I appreciate this video. Come back home Justin.
😆 Hey, my first "cinema camera" was the original EOS M!
Valid points!
False color, audio on the body, 10 stops of ND, 6k, triple ISO, better color, better codecs...
ZV-E1? The compact?
@@JustinPhillip Yes sir, the full rig (body, monitors, tranmitter, light, mics, followfocus, lenses) fit in my backpack. For documentary type stuff, it makes the process of traveling and shooting 10x easier. I didn't even need a shooting permit and people were more natural. The stricter the place the more I strip it down. To be fair I've only taken in on 2 projects abroad as my main camera but each one lasted over a month so It's been through a lot.
Should I cry now after just buying an FX3? LOL. TBH not switching to Canon regardless. Would rather chill with my FX3 until Sony drops another banger.
I want it soooo bad ! The colors
😅I don’t own any of the camera this channel own. But I am also excited to see others put out camera to compete with Sony.
I m just a Sony ZVE10 mkii owner and trying to learn the craft of cinema.
Nice!
lumix s5 X.........try it you might like it......even smaller for a travel doc ?......lumix g7 or the g9 ll ....you wil save allot of travel weight !
Canon is back! That’s awesome!!
So true
Getting annoyed with Sony taking forever to drop the new line.
I'm predicting a Sony FX4 that will have internal raw, internal NDs, and everything else everyone wants the FX3 MK2 to be.
😮
The C80 is coming out November 29th.
I sure hope Armando Ferreira reviews this camera! He NEARLY got me to switch to Sony. I'd be kicking myself hahaha!
🙄
@@JustinPhillip Not in the Armando Army? 😂
He is a joker
I didn't see anyone forcing you to stay with Sony?
Well your correction does really make you look rather green to me on this video 😅
😂 yeah i was afraid of that
@@JustinPhillipa good tip would be to not add plus green, just shoot 'normal', then in Resolve use the color warper to push just the skin tones away from magenta and a bit more into yellow/green
That C80 top handle looks really bad. I do think the 400 looks really good. Canon is late to the party continually though.
You aint wrong there
You know how it works sony will release something soon that will 1 leg up and so on. I would avoid switching ecosystems too hastily
💯
There is full frame raw in nikon
I have fx3, after watching r5 ii and c80 performans, pleasing colors… not easy to stay with sony
I left because of bad Sony colours and am now with Panasonic but am leaning to canon.
@@digitalfilmreviews7843 yess panasonic also good option. I used panasonic s1h its amazing camera it has everythink but not good autofocus. Amazing colors
@@digitalfilmreviews7843 bad sony colors or you're just shitty with editing? I swear I think people are beyond lazy and have 0 clue what they're doing. There's countless TH-camrs proving the opposite of what youre saying but hey do you.
I'd love the C80 if it wasn't crippled
by using sd cards!
But yea at some point there is a ceiling for me.
what a scen to chose for the sony , im sure you had other scenes
Probably, i get lazy with these edits
honestly If you're invested in the sony ecosystem this makes no sense lol, but if it psychologically helps you jump ships to canon go for it.
Hmmmm….downside with the Nikon is not so marketable
the Sony looks better to me. the drummer shot gotta be polarisation or something
the C80/C400 is a cropped sensor so you'll never get open gate
We will see
Ja it could be fx62 may replace fx6 and fx9 but you can be sure it will be fx9 price.
then I would go for the C400 😬.
Not to be an edgelord and I know they're in a completely different class of camera but it's interesting how the Z6iii can do 60p 6k uncropped internal RAW and the C80 which is 3x more expensive cannot...
🤙🏼
Well, the variable nd is a reason by itself
Facts
Bravo. Canon shooters are friggin happy again.
If i was in the business for this kind of camera i would skip the c80. I would go for c400 instead. Yes is a bit more expensive but the c80 just has too much compromises to make it cheaper. No cfexpress is a no no to me in 2024.
Every Canon camera in the last 10 years gives you no reason to stay with Sony :)
😂🤷🏼♂️
