This has a Jerry Reed, swamp-funk feel to it. Someone should suggest they listen to When You're Hot, You're Hot, Amos Moses or She Got The Goldmine, I Got The Shaft.
The sound is more like the Tulsa Sound, which influenced Clapton. A shuffle played over a straight 4/4 drum beat was the bread and butter for the Tulsa guys.
It's sounds more like a J.J. Cale's vibe song to me.

This was the period in the '70s when he was trying to kick his various addictions and was fascinated with country music and acoustic blues. His favorite influences at the time were Don Williams (you should listen to his stuff, very mellow country vibe) and JJ Cale, a laid-back blues artist who also heavily influenced Lynyrd Skynyrd.
JJ Cale was the composer of "Cocaine", "After Midnight", & "Call Me The Breeze".
He was also influenced alot by johnny cash, that's why he did his variety show with the Dominos
and he was learning the blues.

The backup singers bring a real sweetness to Clapton’s sound. I think the story was that his management didn’t have a lot of confidence of him as a singer, and pushed him to add them prominently to his 70’s records.
And one of those backup singers is Yvonne Elliman, who had a hit song of her own called "If I Can't Have You", from the movie Saturday Night Fever.

From the same 'Slowhand' album, Clapton's duet with Detroit's Marcy Levy 'The Core' would be amazing even without one of the best rock guitar solos plunked down 8n the middle!

A similar sound, but, more bittersweet lyrics, is his song Promises. This particular shuffle rhythm is made to sound like an old train, chugging along.

That sound is the Tulsa sound. It's a little bit southern, a little bit blues, a little bit country, and pure, sweet rock n'roll.
Great artist and song! This is country rock, rockabilly. Yes, leans bluesy and country.
COUNTRY! with a little blues and a little rock in it - at the time, many people thought Clapton had lost his touch (compared to songs while in "Cream" and "Blind Faith") I like it more now, than I did back in the day.
This always made me think of an old man in overalls doing a shuffle dance. 😅

It's like a Bluegrass Country, Blues Cross over type of song with the finger picking type of guitar style almost Banjo like.. Remember listening to this on his album as a kid on Cassette tape! Lol 😅👍😎🏴
One of the best guitarists of all time - and yes Clapton was heavily influenced by the blues.
Most of the greats were influenced by the blues. (Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page especially).
This sound is called "The Tulsa Sound". Most of the the band members were from Tulsa Oklahoma. Clapton lived here in Tulsa for a short while, loving the style of music. That sound includes Leon Russell, JJ Cales, the Hansons, David Gates, and many others.

His 80's stuff is actually really good! If you can find it, his cover of his own 1970 hit "After Midnight" released in 1988 is AWESOME!

lots of good memories with this album. my wife's dad had it in the basement den where the stereo was. when I'd come over we'd go down and "listen to music" in the den and this was one of my favs that he had. Wonderful Tonight is on this Slowhand album and a great love song.
Attended his concert in Dallas about 25 years ago. No opening act and he played for 4 hours. Amazing
Country blues. Clapton wrote this with the backing singer (Marcy Levy) and George Terry (who also played with Abba and the BeeGees).
Marcy Levy, later of Shakespears Sister (as Marcella Detroit) with Siobhan Fahey, formerly of Bananarama, who was once married to Dave Stewart, who was half of Eurythmics with Annie Lennox. That's all from this evening's episode of "Rock Family Trees".
There was a time in his career he got into country. He also has " Swing Low Sweet Chariot ". Another great tune from Clapton . In my opinion , all through the 70's was his best years. The live version of " Lay Down Sally " from live in the 70's are great. You should listen to his song " The Core " live version. 👌👌👌👌🎸

This has always been my favorite song of his, even counting the other bands he was in. Don't know why, I can just listen to this song on repeat and it never gets old.
Eric and his band members all played with Leon Russell. Leon, Carl Radle and Jamie Oldaker were all from Tulsa and were part of the Tulsa Sound. I'm pretty sure anyway. I saw a TH-cam video on Leon once.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to appreciate this iteration of Clapton. Growing up, I loved Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, and then fast forward to Journey in 1989 and his unplugged record. The country influence and the 80s stuff needed time and space to grow on me.
I was the same way. Loved him in Cream mostly. But after I matured I realized just how great Clapton was at writing and singing. Plus his acoustic playing is so good. Still love his 60's early 70's soloing best because I play too and he was one of my idols.
This has been covered by country artists a lot. It's a fantastic song. Marry Levy is the woman singing. I believe she cowrote this with Clapton.

Ooh ooh. As a Clapton fan and guitar player, I can heartily recommend 1970's "Let It Rain", especially since Lex is such a guitar-head. The end solo is righteous.
Clapton plays blues, rock and some real good ballads…he has an incredible acoustic R&B song called Change The World, definitely should listen to it.

I was a junior in high school when this came out. Somebody had this playing on a boom box outside the band hall. I made a comment about “laying down Sally”, one of our gorgeous majorettes.

One of the backing singers and also co-writer is Marcella Detroit who had a huge hit in the early 90s with the song “Stay” as part of the band Shakespears Sister along with a former member of Bananarama. It needs to be seen/heard to believe.

This is Clapton showing his JJ Cale influence. Marcy Levy is singing backup. She sang with him during the mid/late 70s.
From what I remember, this is about his dog, Sally.
This song has JJ Cale's fingerprints all over it, no he didn't write the song, or play on the song, or produce the song. But you can hear that Clapton is channeling his inner JJ for this song, it's undeniable if know JJ's work.

You should check out Clapton's Just One Night live recording of the song "Worried Life Blues." I swear he got the devil in his fingers and the blues in his soul. Robert Johnson would sure 'nuff be proud of Clapton.
Co- written with Marcella Detroit one of his backing singers. She was also in Shakespeares Sister. Look them up. Their top song and fabulous video was Stay.
This from the era when Clapton was listening to and emulating not just covering a lot of J J Cale, one of the most underrated musicians EVER. Had a huge impact on rock, especially those that mixed country, blues rock together, Clapton, Dire Straits, Neil Young, etc, also those artists themselves influenced many many more artists so the unique influence of J J Cale spread incredibly. He's slipped under the radar and sadly died with not enough remembrance. Very surprised that such a massive part of American music hasn't been pushed much more into the limelight. His influence over here in the UK was huge. J J Cale himself didn't want the fame though so maybe his family have similar outlooks.
Eric covered a Bob Marley song "I shot the Sheriff", that was a big hit & also helped Marley's career. Clapton for some reason left out the reason why in the song Bob shot the Sheriff, cause he was growing cannabis.

You asked if it was blues. Sounds highly blues influenced which is no surprise. Clapton was likely one out of two or three kids in England back in the 50s collecting blues music and learning ALL of the artists. He was obsessed. Do you guys realize he was knighted? He wrote so many amazing songs but Lay down Sally was good enough to get him knighted alone, just for writing that ONE song. Oh and then Brad remarks it sounds southern. Well lots of English men try to sound southern because of their love of blues and rock. Eric, Elton, Mick.....
"Bell Bottom Blues" has always been my fave Clapton song.

She's obviously a lover of a well crafted, slightly off the wall solo, and Richard has that in spades with his unique style.

You need to check out some JJ Cale who was a strong influence on Clapton around this time. Clapton covered After Midnight and Cocaine. Lynyrd Skynyrd covered Call Me The Breeze. ✌❤🇨🇦
Personally I think E.C. owes J.J. a ton of money for appropriating his style wholesale and despite that, he's not remotely as funky as J.J.
Clapton branched out in his solo career ..this has overtones of country. I think that's Yvonne Elliman on backup vocals.
This and Cocaine were on the jukebox at my parents bar when I was a teen. I used to clean the place on Sundays when it was closed so I jammed to this stuff. The jukebox was loud as Hell when you were in the bar alone. : )

That intro is the audio equivalent of a swiss watch - those different guitar parts playing different riffs but meshing perfectly and then the rest of the band coming in after a few bars - it's perfect, I can listen to it over and over. It's a great track overall and one of my favourite Clapton singles. Maybe do "Promises" or "Willie and the Hand Jive" next?
A bit of Bob Marley Reggae influence. This was off his Journeyman album which also featured, "I shot the Sheriff."

There is an infamous moment in Australian sport, where Sally Robbins collapsed in the middle of an Olympic rowing final in Athens back in 2004 and she has become etched in Australian sporting history and is forever known as Lay Down Sally.
