Off Grid Log Cabin: Alone with my Dog in an Ice Storm

Relaxing at the cabin with Cali, my Golden Retriever. The weather was incredible, warm and sunny one day with deer coming out to dine on the acorns exposed by the melting snow, but the next day, rain ice pellets fell all night long before changing to snow the following day. It was not the worst ice storm I've witnessed, not like the ice storm of several years ago that shut the northeast down for a few days, but it did some damage.
With our drone, my wife got some incredible aerial footage and photographs of raging rivers, pristine Canadian wilderness in the snow and the log cabin.
The rustic tiny house is extremely cozy right now, especially when my wife and dog are there and the fire in the woodstove is burning, the candles and lanterns are lit and the furs are piled high on the bed. It's extremely cozy now that the floor is insulated and the spaces between the logs have been filled. Woodworking and bushcrafting the structure was very rewarding, but the interior finishes are the icing on the cake. Whenever I'm inside with the fire burning and I look out through the windows and the winter storms raging, I'm inspired to finish the tiny log house as soon as possible so that I can get working on the front porch, the outdoor kitchen, the cellar, workshop, maple syrup shack and more.
I'm particularly excited to live off the land, foraging for wild plants and edibles, growing my own vegetables and becoming self reliant. I can use this off grid cabin as a shelter and base where I can practice living off the land and use primitive technology, learn bushcraft skills, improve my survival skills and my self reliance.
Of course, no video would be complete without the meals that I prepare on the wood stove over the fire with cast iron cookware. In this episode, I make stewed venison spiced with garam masala, with leeks, onions and broccoli. For breakfast, I have fresh chicken eggs from the nearby rural homestead where they raise chickens and turkeys. I will be showing how I put the eggs in long term storage, preserving the food for the future.
My dog and I fall asleep to the hooting of barred owls, and the wind through the trees and the falling rain were a big ASMR triggers for me. It's deep winter outside, but in the cabin was cosy and warm. Sometimes I think living off grid in a tiny house seems much easier, away from the daily stress of life.
In fact, dealing with my high blood pressure and becoming much healthier is my motivation for building this cabin and living the simple life. Not my only motivation of course, I'm also inspired by my wife and my parents, who are living long and happy lives. Inspiration is important in this crazy world, and of course I'm not the only one who wants to escape from society and retreat to a cabin in the woods.
To accomplish my goal of living off grid with as little money as possible, living cheap and saving money wherever possible, I need to continue to hone my woodworking and bushcraft skills, along with tree identifications, foraging, making maple syrup, harvesting chaga, catching fish and game, preserving food for long term storage (dehydrating, salting, curing, smoking, freezing, drying).

A lot of people laugh at me when I say "thank you" to my dog when he does something I ask of him. Good to see more people think it's a good thing to be civil to our hairy companions as well. Cali seems to be one of the most gentle, happy dogs I've ever seen, even for a Golden Retriever... you must bring eachother a lot of joy.

In college, I had a history professor who spoke with a thick New England accent, wore a tweed jacket, smoked a pipe, had once been in the Coast Guard, and was a devout Christian. We became friends and he invited me to go hunting with him. I wasn't sure what to expect from this man who time forgot, but when I arrived at the hunting site, it was pretty much exactly this: a wood cabin he calls "the camp" that he built by himself. I go hunting with him once a year, and we sit in that cabin, smoke pipes, talk about history (I am a history teacher, myself), and plan hunting strategies. It's awesome.

Dogs are always off the grid everywhere and 99.9% of the time they pee and poop outside. BTW living with a Golden Retriever is about as close to living with a another human as you can get.

Lol I accidentally watched this on my TV on youtube and I didn't know what the title was so I couldnt finish watching it. GOD has given this man so many wonderful gifts and he is such a hard worker. I had to find it on my phone to subscribe so I could see what else he would build! The scenery in the fall was stunning.

Just found your channel. I am a 59 year old woman who looks after her terminally ill husband. I have osteoarthritis, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and am unable to walk around much. I was a nurse for 30 years and spent 10 of them in Oregon. Thank you for the relaxation, tranquility and beauty. Above all the blessed silence and the sounds of nature. The simplicity I realize is something I should have tried to nurture instead of separating work and relaxation. It seems to me you have discovered, or, are in the process of doing that. Yes but human food has so many bad stuff for them. Too much sodium, carbs, preservatives etc. I don't ever feed my boy human food, no scraps bcuz I taught him not to do that and respect meal time. He always has food in his bowl. Personally I would not recommend any human food for dogs but its the owners choice. 🐶

I really love to see what you do, you see I grew up in Williamsburg Brooklyn, it's now consider hipster vill we are talking about 3500 for a 1 bedroom apt. I remember be and my stepfather (raised me since I was 2) would got to building and collect old led pipes to melt down to make fishing weights. Take old washer machine Motors and make knife sharpeners or grinders for food. So what I'm saying, my father instill in me a appreciation for what you are doing, and I want to say thank you.

You're not kidding. GODS creation is so awesome. I love watching these videos and just relaxing at home while I sip some coffee or take a nap or eat some food. If I'm not watching this I'm listening to sounds of nature when I nap or sleep. Very peaceful. This way of living is simple and so cool. So much peace. Not all people are bad or evil but I agree and know what you mean about just living alone and not near people because you just never know what people living you might do or how they act.

Dr. Chill It’s true they call them Shot Shops, you go in look at a menu and pick which shot you want. I have tried “Injected with a Poison” sorta feels like hot fire going through your veins but my favorite is “Shot Through The Heart” cause it tingles as it hits you in your heart. Just seeing the inside of this cabin made my heart sing!!! All the warmth of the golden browns of the logs, even Cali is a warm brown color! And the sounds- GLORIOUS! The crackling fire, stirring the food cookin on the stove; pouring your coffee, the footsteps on the wood floor and even Cali's crunching her food. The snow/ice hitting your coat. Silence is golden; it allows us to hear the comforting sounds of LIFE. Heavenly! Good for you investing in your health so that you can enjoy many, many more days in the cabin with your favorite people/animals!

Christina Reynolds 1st of all, I’m alive cause of me. I’m responsible for my own survival nobody pays for my care but me . 2nd then how did human beings survive in the sixteen hundreds etc? You should watch nat geo or discovery because there’s plenty of people living off the grid producing there own food, clothing, and medical necessities. You put way too much thought into this. I’m willing to bet this guys a weekend warrior anyway and has some office job in the city.

Why dont you worry about yourself instead of getting a bonner over a guy that lives a diffrent life style than yours. You keep no one alive but yourself, and your family (if you have one). You aren't keeping him alive in any way, nor will you because you probably are incapable of doing half the stuff he does. Do you think hes stupid?
