    I had the great privilege and honor to meet Gregory Hines in 1986 At LAX airport. I was coming back from Hawaii and had a layover there. I was at a newsstand looking at a magazine, I looked up and Gregory was standing right next to me. I was shocked and excited to meet him and told him how great I thought he was and he thanked me. I’m reading some of the comments here and one of them say he seemed like a nice guy. I just want to write to tell you he was more than nice, he was a class act. R.I.P. you are truly missed.

      I can hardly walk. That's why I prefer to fly. ;) So, no, even without tap lessons I've an idea how hard it is. To get there. What all classy pros have in common is their capabilities to make their prowess appear easy, or it wouldn't be entertaining and no fun watching it. But just because something looks easy when performed by an expert, doesn't mean it is. It hardly ever is. That's what I always know.

    I'm a huge Gene Kelly fan, but I love how Gregory Hines dances. They're both such masculine dancers. Hines is so loose and relaxed but controlled at the same time so all the steps are perfect. He almost attacks the dancing. There's nobody like him. I'm sad that they're both gone.

    • @cockeyedoptimista
      @cockeyedoptimista 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Great comment. Dunno how "masculine" Hines is, though. I LOVE him. But he seems catlike, so relaxed yet never misses, as you said. It's like he's always almost falling but catches himself and that's part of the tapping. It's more universal, transcends masculinity or femininity, though certainly appealing. Whatever it is, it's fantastic!!

What an extraordinary talent he was, taken from us all too soon. He’s got to be dancing with the Angels now... and entertaining them all at the Pearly Gates. And what a fitting tribute to Gene Kelly, who was extraordinary as well.

(And, I always remembered that cute little boy who played Suzzanne Douglas' son, and was an incredible dancer himself.... and didn't realize until tonight that that was Savion Glover!). I am now watching "White Nights", which I have NEVER seen....and Hines spoke beautiful Russian, and was a great actor to boot. But watching him here....my God, how gifted was he. Looking at this performance, this bit from Wikipedia starts to make perfect sense:
    "In 1990, Hines visited his idol, Sammy Davis, Jr., as he was dying of throat cancer, unable to speak. After Davis died, an emotional Hines spoke at Davis's funeral of how Sammy had made a gesture to him, "as if passing a basketball … and I caught it." Hines spoke of the honor that Sammy thought that Hines could carry on from where he left off."

    If Gregory wasn't taken from us so soon, he'd be sitting right where Gene is sitting excepting his Kennedy Award. Rest In Peace Brotha!

    This was heaven for me. One of my all time favorite dancers paying tribute to one of my all time favorite dancers. How I have enjoyed every dance routine I’ve watched these two men perform.

    Simply the greatest and most complete entertainer I've ever seen. Sammy Davis Jr. precedes him as such. I define complete as Gregory Hines' ability to sing, dance, choreograph, act, produce and direct. You would be hard pressed to find some one else who could perform all of these duties at the highest levels. I was blessed to meet Mr. Hines, dine with him, and see him perform. I was totally crushed when I was informed that he passed away. I had just seen the Bojangles Robinson film he did. I think it was his final film. Gone too soon.

    Right after the Great Hines makes his epic finale fall, Cary Grant's reaction is so genuine. "Oh, Wow!" 💜 it! Today's artist need to celebrate each other. If you can't admire your colleagues, you are really not an artist, are you?

    Good morning Kennedy Center!
    Thank you for posting this extraordinary tribute.
    Mr. Hines was at the top of his game then. A fine display of art and virtuosity for a True Legend in the world of song and dance.
    Rest in peace you fine song and dance men of your days.

    Gregory was a phenomenon, talented actor, great dancer & singer & i believe he direted too. People forget he had a hit record with Luther Vandross . We all got a time but it just seem Gregory was Gone too soon. Doesn't get the recognition he deserves, i thank The Most High God i got to see his God given talent.

    I had the pleasure of being Greg's StanIn, on an USA Network miniseries. We had so much fun. Between takes, we would play around singing Temptations Songs, like My Girl. He is an Endearing Spirit who suffered in complete silence until it could not be hidden any more. That's a Trouper. I miss you Greg, and I thank GOD for having a chance to be a small part of your life.
