For me, hands down the 55 takes the cake. I’ve had numerous occasions where I needed both hands to handle all my documents and not worrying about my main bag on the back (since it’s got locking zippers) and my daypack on the front (which also has locking zippers, btw). On rare occasions I must checked my main bag in, I carry the Osprey Airporter to put the main bag in and have it wrapped in the airport for added protection while my daypack filled with all my documents, electronics, etc. stays with me. My 55 has conquered most europe and South-East Asia for quite some time now. Happy travel all!
This is the best video that actually talks about both backpacks in detail very nicely explained. I also love travelling light I know people who don't bring much clothes when they travel to places like Thailand because they can purchase things like t-shirts for a really cheap price in the markets there. Having to always worry about paying extra for luggage weight, waiting times or worrying if your luggage gets stolen or not it's just too much hassle for me, better to travel just with a carry on makes things so much easier.
Farpoint 55 is carry on size for Southwest Airlines and the daypack can be detached and is within size regulations for your allowed personal item. Just always check your airline luggage regulations. Last year I used mine on a cruise trip. Attached the daypack to the front and it balanced extremely well and I love this as another feature of farpoint. Happy travels everyone!
We have the 55 and have used it in Thailand using public transit & Ireland/New Zealand rental car touring 2 months @ a time each. I agree with all your review. To me .... the best combination would be the 40 with a separate day-type-pack, around 20 liters, that would have the protection sleeve for a tablet/computer along with water bottle carriers on the side and ..... more lasing points. Would want to have the same front "Clipping" arrangement as the 55. Have found that we carry the day pack more in front than having it attached to the main pack. Also .... not "Zippering" the 2 together and just having it "Strapped-on" is quick and much easier. PACKING Cubes ..... are a MUST!! I like to carry a utility knife/tool everywhere I go. So ... that means the main bag has to be "checked-in" .... security goes "nuts" when I forget the tool in the carry-on. Most of the time there is no charge for bags when flying internationally .... so .... cost is minimal unless you're a "Jet Setter". Sorry for the vernacular from the 60's & 70's.
Definitely the set up i go for now as well. The osprey daylite daypack is compatible with some of their other packs for a 'clip on' carry... not sure if it works with the 40 but that would be the perfect combination for me too :)
Best video about those two bags. I was always struggling on which bags to choose. Those bags are very handy but have different purposes and you gave useful answers. Thanks !
Good video, I wish there's a video like this when I need it about a year ago. I love my 55L, but I find myself rarely use the day pack, because it would get much bigger than you might think. I love the fact you can take the day pack off the 55L.
The s/m farpoint 55 is actually small enough to carry on legally because it’s 2 liters smaller than the 40 without the day pack. It’s even small enough with the daypack if packed lite and or compressed using the straps built in
I'm looking for a backpack sinceit'll be my first time travelling alone for such a long time. I am definitely an "overpacker" so i have to force myself to pack lighty. I think the Farpoint 40 is a perfect choice for that! Thanks for this video!!
Yes nothing but a smaller backpack to force you! If the 40 still seems small, you can pair it with a nice daypack that you can wear during your sightseeing. Good luck Christin :)
@@indietraveller yeah that's what i've been planning to do. A small backpack for the day and the bigger one for my clothes etc. Thank you for this informative video!!
Great comparison! Very interesting that you didn't find the daypack zip on feature of the 55 to be a reason to buy since you would carry the smaller one more than zip it on.
awesome review! very good contrast between the 2 options. i will probably buy the Farpoint 40 and use a separate daypack as a second bag, hopefully will have no troubles with carry on restrictions.
I got 40 to not overpack and to limit purchase. I bring a convertible small backpack that I can use as a sling on my chest, which is safer than a daypack (pickpocket).
I wish Osprey hadn't discontinued the Waypoint series. The reinforced sidewalls are what made that pack last and carry for me for YEARS. I've still got it and prefer it to the newer versions. It's heavier but worth it and protects all your stuff even if you have to pack quickly and badly. :)
Your backpack videos have been really helpful to watch :). My only concern is the durability. There have been several reviewers that casually mentioned tears after only like a year of usage. The material doesn't seem rugged like some of the other travel packs out there.
Hmmm, I've had good experiences with Ospreys. I sold the 55 a few years ago but still have the 40 (bought in 2015 I think) which I use several times a year. Still going strong! It's probably hard for reviewers to comment on durability though as the sample size is always just 1. It's mauybe worth looking at the warranties... Ospreys 'all mighty guarantee' is a pretty good one :) Though more expensive packs do tend to have thicker/better materials
Michelle Posey The s/m without the daypack is 3 liters smaller than the 40 and will absolutely go as a carry on by height and volume. If you don’t fill the daypack while attached. It will still be legal.
Thanks for a great video! I tried on the 55 today and it was a perfect fit for me (I'm 6 ft 3 in). They didn't have the 40 though.... My question is, since the 55 is taller and fit me perfectly, would the 40 be to small of a fit?
Hi someone else asked the following question but you might have missed it. How often did you use the day pack whilst travelling (hikes, tours, day trips)? Material, back support and general comfort looks far better on the osprey then fold up one (that might be a strong selling point for the 55 rather than the 40!).
Yeah it's definitely better than fold up ones, but not as good as daypacks you can buy separately (this is mainly because the back is really flat so it can be attached). I did use the daypack all the time, but I rarely zipped it into the main bag, which made this feature feel a bit pointless. At the moment I would recommend maybe getting the 40 along with the Osprey Daylite Travel. Or if you just want a bigger backpack, the Farpoint 55 Trek is really amazing... I reviewed it here: www.indietraveller.co/osprey-farpoint-55-trek-review/

Hi I was hoping to have a bag for 6 months travelling that can pass for hand luggage so have bought the 40l. Do you have any suggestions for a day pack which could be used as a personal item? Or should I go with the 55l and use the front daybag as such?
Does working holiday mean you'll spend a longer time in fewer places? Then there's maybe less need to travel light, so that would maybe point to the 55. Hard to say though!
Hi ! great video, would the Farpoint40 be a great backpack for office use, and having a separate compartment for a change of clothes? and does it fit 2 waterbottles and a lunchbox?
Hmm you can, and it will fit that stuff, but I'd maybe go with something else for office use. I'm using a Tortuga Setout Divide for that kind of thing right now and I love it.
Brandon Miller I am traveling around China and Japan for a few weeks this summer and one of the Japanese flights has a 7kg weight limit for carry on and personal item, or check a bag for $160 USD. Do you think the 40L is the best for this? Or is it not realistic to be under the 7kg weight and so just get the 55 for extra room?
Brandon Miller 7kg sounds very light. However, you can layer some of the clothing on yourself instead of packing it, and you can split the total weight between your carry on and your personal item (backpack). Depends if your bringing camping gear (or other gear) or if you’re doing urban traveling. You should try putting together everything you plan on packing into a bag and measure the weight.
Anyone can help me out with carry-on explanation? I see that these kind of bags can be carry on but then i wonder how to do this. People take camera's, swiss knifes, liquids (for lenzes, creams..), cameras,... In short all items you cant take on a plane or that excesses the weight of carry on (7/10/14kg), how is this possible? And then there's this personal luggage and carry on. Is this 10kg together or seperate? And for last, what are the extra costs if the airport doesn't allow your bag as carry on? Would help me a lot, thanks!
Just to be clear i can pack as much in the mainbag of the 55 as in the 40 right? So the only difference is that the 55 mainbag has a longer, less deep shape as the 40?
if you take off the day pack at the airport can the 40L part pass as carryon and the daypack as a personal item? Or can it not because it is a few inches taller than the Farpoint 40?
Officially the 40l part of the Farpoint 55 is slightly too big. However, I have successfully taken it as carry-on many times, while taking the 15L daypack as a personal item. It's not guaranteed this will pass though! As I said, on two occasions Easyjet made me check in the main backpack. I was once also told that it was too big by another airline but they let me through anyway. It definitely helps if the daypack isn't filled to the brim with stuff. If they see just a fully packed main backpack and the daypack with maybe just a tablet/laptop and a water bottle, they might shrug it off. If everything is stuffed to maximum capacity they might start to ask more questions. Sorry there isn't a more clear cut answer! I guess the answer is "yes you can... usually" :)
I think you answered your own question ;) Personally, I consider 40L more than enough. The longer the trip the fewer things I actually want to pack, as I'll have to carry them for so long. You can wash your clothes while you're on your trip in Europe and bring 7-10 days worth of clothing.
They had asked you to check maybe because your size was M/L, right? I saw some reviews related to S/M and the guys said it was perfect size for overhead compartment. Please coment your personal size...S/M or M/L?
finally someone who answered the questions about the 55-daypack not being the same as the 40.
Thanks!!!
I'm glad I could clear it up! :)

Do you think the 40L is the best for this? Or is it not realistic to be under the 7kg weight and so just get the 55 for extra room?
Brandon Miller
7kg sounds very light.
Which size of farpoint 40 do you have? I am thinking to go large becase 40liters and not 38liters like on s/m size. I am 181cm. Thanks
Would help me a lot, thanks!
what would you recommend for taking a tent and sleeping bag etc..?
Larger bag... e.g. Osprey Atmos 65
Just to be clear i can pack as much in the mainbag of the 55 as in the 40 right? So the only difference is that the 55 mainbag has a longer, less deep shape as the 40?
Yeah exactly, the volume seems to me pretty much the same. It's only the shape that's different.
Thanks for sharing! :)
What do you think of the rei ruckpack 65
The 55 its not carry on right?
No it's a bit too tall to be carry on. Have still done it a few times with the daypack detached
@@indietraveller thanks for the reply great job
May I ask what is the model of the daypack? Deuter model
Thank you
I'm planning to buy the osprey farpoint 40
It's a karimor packable daypack that I got from a sports/outdoors store. Couldn't find it online but this is similar: geni.us/20lpackable
thank you :)
Can 55 go on the plan with me
Would you be so kind to post here the reference number of the Farpoint 40 size M/L?
Sorry, not quite sure what you mean by reference number...
Well it's the product code. Anyway I called Osprey in Uk and they confirmed me that for the M/L it is OS-5-503-0-2
if you take off the day pack at the airport can the 40L part pass as carryon and the daypack as a personal item?
I guess the answer is "yes you can... usually" :)
Did you go to Armenia?
I did this year (loved it). But I bought that tshirt long before that trip, and didn't realize it had the Armenian flag's colors :)
Solid!
Is possible to pace 40 L for europe 1 month? I met some girl pack with 30L for 3 month in europe autumn-winter (nov-dec)....
I think you answered your own question ;)
Personally, I consider 40L more than enough. The longer the trip the fewer things I actually want to pack, as I'll have to carry them for so long. You can wash your clothes while you're on your trip in Europe and bring 7-10 days worth of clothing.
has anyone tried the 40 L M/L on Ryanair does it always fit ?
I used the 40 with Transavia without issues, isn't the same but maybe the info can clarify a little.
They had asked you to check maybe because your size was M/L, right? I saw some reviews related to S/M and the guys said it was perfect size for overhead compartment.
Please coment your personal size...S/M or M/L?
I have M/L and it's just slightly over the limit. I do believe S/M is just within the limits...
The day pack you pulled out of the Farpoint 40 at the end of the video, does that come with the backpack?
No, that's an item I purchased separately - geni.us/20lpackable
you've got the Armenian flag on your t-shirt :) COOL!!!
I loved traveling in Armenia! :)
Armenian flag T-shirt?

good feedback! I stopped that in my newer videos ;)
AMM AMM AMM SHUT IT PLZZ!
