THe mother is the one part of the story I'm not sure about. She claims it was all her the whole time, she begged the uncle to do it. That when she was being carried away she was laughing, not screaming. But, if you re-watch that scene...she's absolutely not laughing, then, she strangely thanks him here at the end...why do that, if you hated your son and everything he represented? At first in the theatre I believed her, and assumed she was truly happier with the Uncle...but afterwards I started to wonder if maybe it was stockholm syndrome or something, and now today I have no idea what to really think about her.

Dude, same. Though I think she said those things to him to spite him and his father. She looked like she was about to slap him in the beginning, for coming into her room while she was getting ready. So who knows.

Also, you could clearly see her interaction with Amleths father was very peaceful and Amleths father seemed to show an affection toward her and toward Amleth. That's not the behavior a rapist would show. Also if Amleth wanted to save her from Fjonir ever since he was a boy, he must have thought she was kind to him because she played the role of a kind woman very well.
My theory is that Amleths mother was never truly hurt. She really is just an evil lady that takes pleasure in manipulating men and Amleths Father was unaware that he married a psychopath who used to be a nobody slave. When Amleths Father was murdered, she at first was scared of Fjonir, until she began manipulating him.

I don't find it unconvincing at all. At the beginning when Amleth barges into her room, it was instantly clear to me that she was being checked for signs of pregnancy-and when placed in the context of her husband's absence and her not showing yet, I became immediately suspiscious of her. It's very subtle, but it's there. I'm assuming everyone else in this thread is male, yes? Perhaps that's why some of you didn't notice. This vital detail coupled with that one Norseman accusing her of infidelity and her laughing later in Fjolnir's arms during the coup made me realize it was a set-up that she helped orchestrate. That's why the 'twist'-if that's what it's meant to be-didn't surprise me at all, and I was anticipating the moment when she revealed her true colors.

@@AnimaVox_ Then please, explain why she is thanking the son she despises here for killing her? Why not do anything else? Spit in his face, curse him, literally anything else.

@@TheRevanchists I figured it was because he gave her a quick death. But it could also be related to some Norse belief, like maybe she's going to Valhalla because she died in battle.

Hard to tell. Maybe she did betray him but still yearned for death. In the end though I think she was right that she was his death. He was already injured when he battled Fiojnir courtesy of her and Gunnar. If he'd fought at full strength he might have won and survived.

I do like that there's really a question of motivation here, was his mother really a cruel evil witch here, or was she still a victim who was basically carried away against her will, and now had a new life with the uncle,. She had a new family, and Amleth returning only would endanger this security and the life of her son. We also only see the old King through Amleth's eyes. who knows what kind of man he was.

She said thank you because “in the heart… thank you” means she’s going to Valhalla because she died in battle, that’s why she attacked him to initiate battle. As a woman in Viking world, you are destined to live and die in hell as you are not allowed battle and your life is slavery. He did what he set out to do. And yes I believe she was truthful in the tales of the uncle and father. I’m sure she was faking screaming when he took her so that their cover story would look right. She didn’t mean she was literally laughing, but internally. And now the son will try to avenge his mother against him repeating the cycle- if you have media literacy, the story is of how violent patriarchal systems keep us all imprisoned.
