- Replacing your toner doesn't have to be a confusing headache! Here are 3 ways to change (or refill) your toner on your brother laser printer. The cheapest way to replace toner is to refill the cartridges yourself as we show in in this video. The most expensive is direct OEM replacement, and the happy medium is to use 3rd party replacements that wont break the bank. We are using the HLL2350DW Brother laser printer for this video but the concepts are the same for most Brother laser printers and will overlap with other brands as well.

When refilling, you will want to empty any leftover toner into a plastic baggie that has a zip lock, then after separately with compressed air to blow out any waste toner left in the cartridge (outside, well ventilated area) BEFORE refilling with NEW toner. If using a compressed air can, only press short bursts of air-- as it's easy for moisture to build up emptying compressed air using the straw to get inside the cartridge. Moisture is bad for toner and so is waste toner in the cartridge mixing with new toner. Not emptying the old toner can leave you with bad or faded toner prints. You may get lucky once, but on the second time you will see bad results. Probably shouldn't refill more than 3-4x on these cartridges (eventually the developer roller or toner blade will fail causing print issues ~10-12k+ prints). Cheapest workspace is cardboard with newsprint type paper over it. The tn450 series are more forgiving than other toner and the cheapest to refill or buy new cartridges. For most, ~3k prints is alot of paper utilization so it will take most of a year or more to do that volume even under moderate use. Also, don't buy extra bulk toner powder more than you would need for immediate use-- it can go bad even sealed. I have a brother color laser and I get about 2400 b&w prints out of 2500 yield cartridge and about 1600 on colors. The biggest headache with my old printer after 25k prints is the printer throwing drum errors after a refill when there are 4 drums to troubleshoot--bought a spare set of drums just for this reason. B&W's only printers only have one drum.

Hi Gb Xx you clearly know your stuff so may I also ask you is a full bottle (100g) the maximum amount of toner you can refill into the empty starter cartridge that comes with the machine? Also thanks for all the great info about emptying out old toner and using a compressor in bursts so as not to get moisture in the cartridge thank you very much indeed.

@@andya07774 the tn450 has about 70 grams of toner.. the high capacity one uses 90.. there is a list on TH-cam type How many grams of toner does a Brother cartridge contain? There is a list in the description.. starter cartridges usually have about 20% less toner than normal or high capacity cartridges

I used to use an Epson ET-2550 th-cam.com/users/postUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 , an early model of the ink tank style. It worked well, but had one nuisance that drove me up the wall; if you didn't put it in high quality print mode you'd get a streak across the page. I'm happy to say I have yet to see this with this printer. The print quality has been fantastic so far, the set up was super easy. All in all I'm very happy with this printer.

Just swapped out the toner cartridge on my 2350DW yesterday, but I haven't thrown out the old cartridge yet ... looks like I'll be keeping it around so I can buy the toner powder and give refilling itmyself a try ... many thanks

the toner powder are made with very tiny particle that is very hard to catch by a regular vacuum filter. The vacuum will suck away the black powder but they may end up in your room.

Not familiar with this Brother but commonly there is second toner container for trash that should be cleaned. It's usually behind the big roller.
Is there a trash container at DR2590?
I made a ham-handed attempt to collect toner from my old cartridges, (I can be really cheap when I wanna be), and use to refill the current cartridge in use. It didn't work and I am sure I over-filled it.
Is this at all a viable process? It seems a shame to waste all that toner - and there was a lot!

I did this once and it wouldn't register that it's full and a reset didn't help. I heard you can replace the chip but haven't found out how yet.
No chip......not that sophisticated yet.....plus probably too expensive that way to do. There is a gear on the side of the cartridge that needs to be reset. Take off the side plate & reset it manually.

I don't print much so I will buy a retail one but good video. I got a Brother HL-6180DW it came with a full TN-720 which is a 3,000-page cartridge. After 7 years I don't print much last month start saying I need to replace the toner cartridge. So I took it out and taped over the plastic or glass hole that the toner replacement laser looks at. Problem solved I decided to print out a report today cause I was going to replace the cartridge. Hell if I can get 7 years from retail why not buy retail? The print report shows I have a bunch of toner in there and I printer 1,843 pages which means I should have 1,157 prints left give or take. So why do printer compines want people to waste the toner? It seems like a waste of money to replace or throw away a cartridge that could print another 1,000+ pages. The way I print I may get another 2-4 years out of that. LOL

Good question, I wonder it hasn't been touched on so far, so may I side with you: When refilling, can I take any powder? For instance, can I transfer the old toner powder in my dying Canon to my newer Brother printer? Also, does this work for the colors?

QUESTION: I I have a theory that some of these cheap brother knock off cartridges do not allow full control over the print density.
I have installed brand new cartridges, and no matter how ivory the settings my print quality just stays the same - - pretty mediocre!
When I install the factory brother cartridge, I can vary the settings and immediately notice even the slightest difference.
So what do you think? And by the way, I will try to replace the toner in the original brother cartridge in the future…
I think that may be very possible. I have never experimented with that before.

The thing that put me onto this theory, was the fact that I get no difference no matter what settings I use!
I am using my printer to make PCBs, and so it is an absolute requirement that I have as dense a print as possible. First, I print on glossy color, laser paper, then I bind the print to a clean, PCB, and then run it through a laminator (that I modified to run just a bit hotter.). This in-turn transfers, the toner from the glossy paper directly to the copper of the PCB. So, if there is any lightness, the acid will etch right through that part, and cause the PCB to be unusable; also very thin traces are very problematic, and totally depend upon density to survive.
Anyway, thank you very much for making your video and I will certainly follow it once this original brother cartridge is empty.

Followed exact process with the exact printer. When I did a test print it came out like crap. Re pulled the cartridge and inspected it. Its dumping too much toner. Any advice or input would be great. Thanks in advance.
Check the green roller and make sure there is no dust or toner on it. And inside the printer, make sure everything is clean.

I don't think these instructions work now (2022). Brother seems to have made it harder (impossible) to use old cartridge until it really gets low.

great video but you dont talk about the digital chip that tells the printer that you are out of toner and it still wont work when you refill a used cartridge
Chips are model specific, some models you need to change chips and some you can just bypass. This specific model of brother you can bypass with a setting.
i have a chip too and first it didn’t work. after refill you need to reset your toner, there is a video on youtube.
Just press Go seven times when error before printing and you are good to go

Third party is cost $8 only, not worth to buy toner refill.
I just started to watch you video, to see if it will cover my needs, and ran into your introduction and statement that if you did not already subscribe, to hit that subscribe button, etc.... I and many other people detest this request, it is premature, before knowing if I will like your video, to subscribe! Why are you thinking good people would do that? You should earn the subscription, instead of tricking the viewers into subscribing and later getting bombarded by various contents that they may not want to be bombarded with when they open a TH-cam search engine. I mean in your case, learning how to refill a cartridge will not need to be getting future updates on this subject, if one's memory still works?! This is really annoying. But you video did cover my needs, very well thanks, but do not need to subscribe.
Yeah but Brother will disable that cartridge through the next software update or the next Windows of IOS update.
