  • What is linguistic anthropology? In this video, I will be defining linguistic anthropology as it appears online and then sharing some of the big picture ideas I believe everyone should know about linguistic anthropology. Linguistic anthropology is a highly complex field which deserves more attention in modern academia. As a UCLA Anthropology student myself, I am excited to share some of my thoughts and opinions with you all.

    Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

    A super undervalued field in my opinion. In my anthro undergrad there was so little emphasis on linguistics, I'm finding myself building a short course of self study to fill in the gaps. Thanks for this. :)

    With this video I was thinking:
    My First language is spanish and i'm still learning english. I've noticed that some words or expressions are uniques and doesn't have a traslation in others languages. Some words only work in specif place and how the people use them.
    Idk. I just love your videos :)

      Hello! And yes this is a wonderful observation. I took spanish for many years and noticed the same thing. Thank you so much for the support-means a ton!

    Thank you for your videos, they have been so helpful! I am planning on changing my major to medical anthropology and I think a video on that area would be cool since content on medical anthro from a student perspective is rare to come by. Thanks again, love your content

    How can we say that all languages are created equal? Correct me if I am wrong, in langage x because of weather conditions there exist 20 words for snow while in language y there exist 20 words for camel.

    thank you so much from your channel! im a junior in hs and watching your videos has really helped me figure out figure out i probably want to major in anthropology! are there any beginner tips or recommendations you would give? ty again! :)

    • @AliviaBrown
      @AliviaBrown  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Katie! First of all, I think it is incredible that you are getting a jump start on what you may want to major in during college. When I started I had no idea... I think my biggest suggestion is to just start taking classes and see how you feel about them and ask yourself if the topics are something you would enjoy doing down the line. I know it's simple, but I really think it's a great strategy. Good luck!

    Hey random question but I came across a lecture that was listed as happening at UCLA in 2020. It was about finding indigenous people in Cuba and I'm wondering did people watch it in your class?

    • @AliviaBrown

      Hi! I do not think I have watched this video in the classes that I have taken but it definitely seems possible that other classes have shown it!

    4:44 Kinda... think about in terms of productivity or scientific classification where new models and diversity were necessary cause a single name or method wasnt doing the work. There's a tribe who only have the colors dark, red, light and green, you have some work to do guys.

    What are the importance of linguistic anthropology

    • @AliviaBrown
      @AliviaBrown  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Linguistic anthropology is important for so many reasons but one that comes to mind is it allows us to understand how we use language and the power language can have. Language is how we communicate and position ourselves within a community and/or culture. Understanding it’s use and power is incredibly important!
