Awesome list. For beginners I would include: 1. The amazing book of card tricks- Jon Tremaine. 2. The amazing book of magic- Jon Tremaine. 3. The illustrated compendium of magic tricks- Nicholas Einhorn. 4. Magic the complete course- Joshua Jay. For intermediate: 1. Impossibilia- John Bannon 2. Smoke and mirrors- John Bannon 3. Carneycopia- Minch/Carney Also The Books of Wonder. But that is in my list. Your list is awesome. I have many of them and definitely agree.
@@magicorthodoxy Crazy wormhole but I'm digging into Karl Fulves Self Working Card tricks books. He has at least 5 different ones that are all printed from Dover. I bought his first and it's great. I'm wondering if all the others are different tricks and they're worth getting as well. It would be a cool collection but if they're repeating tricks it may not be worth the price.
It's always good to see book recommendations. I have a few of these, but not many, but I'm also fairly new to magic. This should give me some more ideas on what other books to consider buying. Thanks!
There are many good magic book recommendations available from many brilliant magicians. But in my opinion, your book recommendations are excellent. Your "presentation" is to the point, clear and concise. Thank you for the information David. I have many of your recommended books but just need more time to study and practice the ideas. Thank you.
Great video ! A lot of the books you showed I do have ! But a few I don’t” which I must get 😁 I had to buy a second BOBO book as my first fell apart 🤪 for me books are the best part of magic ! The challenge and the end result is so much fun ! 👍🏼👍🏼
David, that was both a great explanation of your opinions and a collection of books. I am very fortunate in that not only do I have all of the books you mentioned, I even have several of them signed by the authors and/or magicians the books are about (Tamariz, Hollingworth, Ortiz, Wonder, Giobbi, etc.). The very first magic book I ever bought was a mass market Signet edition of Scarne on Card Tricks that I purchased in the mid-1970s. I was then out of magic for most the the succeeding 20 years. I have now been back into it and fairly active since 1995. However, like you, I am not a full-time magician and would consider myself a hobbyist.
Great list! I don’t have Art of Astonishment or Books of Wonder. It sounds like they’re kinda Expert level stuff? Others I’d add: Annemann: Practical Mental Magic Banachek: Psychological Subtleties Maven: Prism Tamariz: The Magic Way Regal: Approaching and Interpreting Magic (for me the material in these is just that bit stronger than Constant Fooling, but I mean…it’s David Regal. Buy them all! Giobbi: Card College Light The Memory Arts (just because I found it to be a better path to learning Mnemonica than…Mnemonica!
I've been stopping by Half Price books and just buying whatever magic books they have. Happy to see one of them made your list. The coin magic book. I'm inspired to actually get into it more.
Great post David. I picked up a copy of The mentalism encyclopaedia on your last recommendation. Unbelievable value for money, the chapters on the history alone are absolutely fascinating and an insight to how we stand on the shoulders of giants. It truly changed my obsession with falling for the latest polished marketing ploys for new shiny gimmicks and spending more time on research before parting with my cash. 😎
Wow!!!!!!That was a real feast of magic books.I have many of those books. For me Trost and Regal books are superb!Giobbi card college books are outstanding! Not got the Marlo or Tamiriz (yet!)Paul Harris stuff is quirky but the card tricks are different(cool!)Absolutely Wonderful collection!!!!You’ve really outdone yourself!Excellent!Thank You.Take a bow!👏👏👏👏
Love it! Quite a few I haven't seen and added to my buy list and a couple already on the list and even a couple I have. One of my first ever and one I still love to recommend is Now You see it, Now you don't by Bill Tarr and since I grew up on packet tricks, Cuts, Counts, Moves and Subtlety by Jerry Mentzer. Thanks for the video!
hey david, l love this. been a while since you did a book list. can you do more book lists? like mentalism, stage/ parlour magic, non-card/coin close up magic.
Great list, but I'd add two to the recommendations: The Approach and Maximum Entertainment. If you are a hobbyist considering going pro, pick up The Approach. And if you want to improve your magical impact, pick up Maximum Entertainment.
@magicorthodoxy Nice list, any reason Harry Lorayne books are not mentioned in the list? For example: The Magic Book ,or Close Up Card Magic or Essential Harry Lorayne
When I begin 25 years ago, I also bought those books Gary Ouellet - Close-up illusions Harry Lorayne - The Magic Book Michael Kaminskas - Miracle Material: The Close-Up Magic of Michael Kaminskas
David, I really appreciate all your reviews. They they are so thorough and helpful. I'm not a working magician at all. I'm a magic enthusiast full time anesthesiologist with very little free time (especially during COVID). Which books would you recommend as having the most value in terms of the amount of time investment needed to develop new or better magic? Trying to be as efficient as possible with my learning.
I'm not a working magician either, I work full time with a wife and kids - if I were you, I'd stick with the first few books I mentioned at the beginning. Encyclopedia is my all time favorite !!!
This is the video I really needed. Scarne on Cards and Mentalism encyclopedia ordered! With Halloween approaching can you do a best Spooky or Halloween tricks? Any chance of a review for The Phantom hand or The Genesis System Project?
David, seems like you have a lot of books. I was just wondering have you read them all and if you did, how do you decide what tricks to learn and what tricks to make your regular.
David. If you recommend a bunch of books related to MAGIC THEORY, that would be priceless. Because most of the effect can be learned easily from a video or with the help of prop but there are almost no one talk about MAGIC THEORY. We can only learn those thing including, "Scripting, Audience Management...." from books.

What a lot of books that we absolutely must have! I'm losing my breath here! And where am I supposed to find the money? Luckily I don't nearly have room for them all. So David, if I were to just buy three, what would be your recommendation?
Awesome. IO would've added Practical Mental Effects by Annemann. Great, great mentalism in that book as well. Tarbell too is a great series. There are so many great books. :-)
Outstanding summary; well done! If your viewers are interested in an eclectic compilation of many tricks by many magicians at varying skill levels, then here is an honorable mention for "Talk About Tricks," compiled by Joshua Jay of Vanishing Inc Magic.
Hi, excellent video. I'm a beginner in card mechanics & gambling slide of hands. What books would you recommend more specifically in that direction for beginner / intermediate. I have The expert at the card table & The Royal Road to Card Magic. Thanks.
@@magicorthodoxy Okey dokey, thanks anyhoo 🙂. Apparently the author (R Marc Davison) has compiled all the most popular card tricks from different sources into this series of 3 books so all the tricks can be found elsewhere. What's handy about these is that all the tricks are in one place (or 3 places), & the beginning of each book has a table explaining the type of trick (self working / slight light / slight heavy, etc), how impactful it is, the difficulty level...I've only just got them as I say, but they seem pretty good 🙂.
@@davidanderson9229 Hi David, I just picked these up recently also at magi-Fest from Don's magic Books. They do look good, but I haven't spent too much time with them yet.
