I remember carnival back then. Loved it so much fun. I even got lost in the 1974 one, was found happily dancing behind a float, didn't even know i was lost. Happy days. By the time i got to my teens late 70"s carnival was the highlight of my year. By the 90's it lost some of it's soul. I still every other year sometimes it's like old days.
Beautiful days. People white and black had more house parties and street parties in the 70's, we were much more fun and sociable. We had originality and creativity in fashion and music evolving all the time. Now the people and culture seem so dull in comparison, chasing material goods, money, they've lost their creative essence, their soul, nothing stands out now. Yes, hooligans liked causing trouble and fighting but the general Notting Hill, Portobello, All Saints Rd 'the front line', Ladbroke Grove, Golborne Rd vibe was cheerful and the Caribbeans were warm and friendly. I remember as a child how lovely the older folk were to me as a little white kid. I was born in 1964 and very pleased I was. Less technology, less TV, more people friendly and much more fun!

Fast forward 30-40yrs from now and 2010s would be the best era. It has always been this way. Disregard the challenges of the past and fixate on the negatives of today.

As a six year old, my parents covered me in cocoa powder and entered me for a fancy dress competition as a Zulu. Obviously being six I wasn't aware of the context thing, and wouldn't do that with my own kids now as 'blacking up' is no longer PC.
@@pagethreemodel I don't think he's saying that didn't exist. He's saying that inn his experience of the time he got along with everyone and people on general were more open and friendly. As a little kid in 73 he wouldn't have been a skinhead running around chasing black people but he does remember the hospitality shown him by the black people he knew. Sure there was racism from police and so on which I also suffered and fought about but I see his point cos amongst all that were great carefree times too. AND yes there were more parties. My parents friends and family had parties every other week. Plus carnival was big and spread out with so little trouble.
There was something special about Notting Hill back then. You can never get that back. I know it was mostly slum housing but the place had soul. Go there now and there's all these posh shops that are completely empty.
Your so right. I used to go there every Saturday in the 70's as a kid with my Dad because he used to like the second hand market. In the 80's I used to go there by myself every week to look for records. I can't stand the place now , it's so fake.
This warms my heart. My grandma and her friends brought me to my first carnival at age 5, they were the originals and I never lost the true meaning and beauty of carnival because of their influence. I love our culture!! ❤❤❤

Great times attending with my parents until I ditched them in 1974! The Panorama being held in Isaac Newton School and the King and Queen competition being held at the Commonwealth Institute - both buildings now gone! Lovely to see and brings back some happy memories. No police cordons, no carnival route and Ladbroke Grove Station open!!!
Sad to think this was 43 years ago. Most of the performers will be dead now, even the kids will be in their 50's and 60's. They looked to have been happier times for all.
My guess is it was happier. You didn't have all these restrctions like you do now, at least you could dance behind the bands but not any more. Even if it was a ghetto back then, people seemed to be more free to be themselves.

me miss the sound systems underneath the fly overs. They stopped it and closed them off because it was probably quite dangerous with crushing and no escape. It shows in this video that carnival was ram in in these times. Now it's worse because the police and council don't let it breath and expand they coup up everybody and restrict the movement so your hemmed in like cattle. I say let it expand wherever it needs to go and don't block off the roads so that the police can control it. Fuck the police and let carnival grow !
Great footage showing how good it used to be. Such a shame of what it's turned into now. 4 stabbings on family day, and a further 8 stabbings on Monday. Shocking. We'll, it's not shocking is it. The youth do this everyday, everywhere in gangs in Londons Boroughs. The carnival needs to be moved to a park where it can be managed properly, ticketed, people search for weapons and do things properly like every other festival that takes place!
Stabbings unfortunately still happen at ticketed events in parks, T in the Park for example. That unfortunately is the nature of any mass gathering in this world. Nottinghill carnival is a parade and moving it to a park will not only defeat that purpose but ignores the history of why Nottinghill carnival started. The culture is meant to be displayed and remembered, not hidden in a park somewhere.
+Kemsie1 Thanks for your reply Kemsie. I think if we were to compare the stabbings rate to other events, we would see that Notting Hill has an incredibly high rate compared to others. Whilst I appreciate its always important to keep the traditions of an event, we do have to move with the times. Everyone wants to see all cultures and groups express themselves, but it needs to be done safely. There's no denying that more gang members attend Notting hill than any other event in the uk. They ruin it for the hard working people on the floats and the general public turning up to enjoy it! Not to mention the general littering and criminal damage done to local businesses and residents addresses. Residents have to board up the front of their homes in hope their windows are not smashed? What event makes the public do that?! Having it in a park or designated space will make the event safer for everyone. Those are just my thoughts
Well if you actually look at the crime rate of large events (% of the ppl that go), Notting hill's is surprisingly low- lower than Glastonbury's for instance. I haven't seen the statistics for the amount of gang members showing up to carnival (or other public events)- because that would undoubtedly be hard to quantify- but in the last 5 years I have attended the event I haven't been anymore worried about my safety than I have say in town after a football game which I'm sure we can agree, brings out some aggressive people. I don't deny that littering and damage can occur from carnival but as time goes on steps are taken to avoid this- a large portion of the litter from carnival is now recycled. The carnival costs London about £7m in policing but brings in a revenue of around £93m. A lot of which would disappear if you take the parade and floats off the road. Not to mention ppls exposure to a different way of life. People are more likely to gain insight to a new culture (and in turn gain tolerance and understanding) if it's passing by them on the street than if it's in a park for an event that they would most likely not buy a ticket for. I agree, more can always be done to make large events safer but I do find it strange that ppl want to change the main appeal of an event when it doesn't have a higher crime rate than other large events.
I went to the Carnival every year from 1982 to 2015, but just not the same now, it made me happy and the work that went into the carnival was wonderful, but some how i feel it has got little scary, the whole time on the news its about police numbers and gangs who go just to rob people. When you see this vid from 1973 it brings me such joy as even in the 80s and 90s it still had that something special, i hope it can get back to its true roots and be the happy Carnival it once was. As it brings people togather and must not be lost.

I was a Little Boy back then. It was great times moving forward in a Multi cultured London. Love was in the Air and it was intoxicating. I felt the change was when Margaret Thatcher stepped into Power. Milk every morning at School was a treat to savour. When she took it away, I felt as if we Kids had done something really wrong. 1980's Youth clubs and Apprenticeships disappeared and by coincidence the National Front and Skinheads was on the scene. Fear was placed in Peoples Hearts and Minds. We had to go to School and the Shops in groups for Safety reasons. Indians and Pakistani's received continuous Physical bullying and we were attacked by the Police and Racists people. Punks got a kicking from Skinheads as well. If you walked from School on your own like I did. Getting spat on or racially abused was common placed. People really need to look at the Whole picture of our existence on this Earth. We are all here together and that will never change. So from tomorrow say Good Morning to three people of three different Nationalities everyday and watch the World change for the Better. It is down to Us. Peace.

Skinheads were not all racists. Considering they were into Ska music and Reggae. It was when the NF subverted the subculture mixing it with the Football Hooliganism, however the "Rock Against Racism" movement was a good counter weight to them.
Nice Times... Wish I could have experienced it back then - But honestly people, we live in different times so it is no surprise that Carnival did not stay frozen in a capsule from the 70's. I heard UK people throughout the years talking down the Carnival,but internationally it is still one of the best. People come from all over the planet(self included) for those 2 days in Notting Hill. Enjoy it while you can and don't take it for granted. Let's see what it becomes twenty years from now..

Nice to see old footage of the carnival in Engeland in the Netherlands we have also an small caribian carnival in (in the begining days) in Rotterdam (1984 - still going on) and yes also there is change alot in the time, my firstime as little kid with my parents/family was back in 1987

I note that you put Spanish speaking islands flags on parade, which is odd, seen as the footage is the UK Notting Hill Carnival, in 1973. 🇧🇧 🇩🇲 🇬🇩 🇬🇾 🇻🇨 🇱🇨 🇹🇹 🇦🇬 🇯🇲. West Indian (also known as Carribbean flag's), part of the Commonwealth, resident in the UK for many decades. All the above (except for Jamaica) had a Carnival on their Island for many decades prior. Jamaica's first Carnival on their Island was in the early 90s. All the other Common Wealth Countries of West Indian background (people in the UK) were involved in the Notting Hill Carnival from the beginning. Claudia Jones was an activist from Trinidad responsible for bringing Carnival to Notting Hill in the UK.

That's a lie. There were race riots in Nottinghill in the 50s (Teddy boys), 60s and 70s (Skinheads and Police). Black people were being stabbed and beaten up all the time. The media reported few of these assaults. This is why the carnival was introduced...to show a piece of the Caribbean. Do some research. Black people had a hard time. Skin heads, National Front, racists made it difficult for those who were invited here and also born here to relax and feel safe.

The early Carnival influence and organisation came from the Trinidadian community. The steel pans and soca, calypso and rapso were the main sounds. The event was fought for and self-organised and at times a bit chaotic, but not in a bad way. More a free for all. Kids had their own day with Meanwhile Gardens and all the playgroups coming together to manage the family atmosphere. Some years later, perhaps as a way to regulate it and partly in response to lobbying, Carnival became more institutionalised. Outside funding meant having a lead organisation, committees, liaison with different branches of government and officials. And ofco urse a challenge to the community to have a vision and a plan. I am not knocking the tieless work of anyone or any group, but it was also inevitable that "community control" was often interpreted in different ways and the stories of in-fighting was so very sad for many of us in the community. There were external changes too, the steel pan sounds and movement. gave way to sound systems and static parties, rum punch gave way to things with more kick. This in turn brought in a different visitor crowd, and the much bigger police presence. Carnival's popularity grew beyond early expectations and the cost-benefits economic arguments about the 'Event' (it used to be a Celebration!) has led to it being very different today (not in Covid-2020!) - as we can all see from this excellent video.

the real carnival,,,,,, bornt in 1977 i was 4 weeks old at my 1st carnival, watchng this shows much free uk was back in 70s, and how diverse everyone was, and the fact harrow rd was used aswell as ladbroke grove is what makes it very frustrating, its far too small and restricted nowadays, kids will never experience what it really was like in the early days, parties everywhere, open doors, they should never have changed the route of procession parade ....

It looks so different to todays carnival. Somehow both the carnival outfits and the music seem more authentically Caribbean! No sign of rap music or half naked dancers. Today's Notting Hill Carnival reminds me more of the South American carnival versions with their distinct outfits - not really Caribbean! I think something has been lost along the way!
+Kat B Would you agree that today's Notting Hill Carnival has much more the South American/Brazilian flavour to it, rather than a Caribbean one? Yes, there are elements of Caribbean culture in the music and types of outfits worn, but it seems to have morphed into more of a hybrid between the two. Now some people might think that's a good thing; it depends on personal taste. It was merely an observation on my part, and you are free to agree with that - or not! 'Nuff said!
This makes me giggle, all those comments you see on so many videos of 50 years ago “… ahhh back when london was London..” and all that crap. And yet they forget that THIS, was London.
I have seen carnival evolved from fully clothed costumes to bikini costumes. But the children costumes have improved. That's why I'm more involved in production and designing of children's costumes
This was the only year i went to N.H carnival....my uncle had moved to london from south wales. My parents took us to visit him during the carnival. I was 5, id never met a black person up till then. I remember having a fried dumpling for the 1st yime too and it was delicious. Later we were at a tube station...my dad lifted me on, the train, turnrd to get my sister.....when the doors shut and the train left. With 5 year old me in it and my family still on the platform. 😂 Thankfully a guard must have seen/ heard my dad shouting and it stopped after a few seconds. I remember that weekenf so clearly. I had a baloon from the carnival....when we got back to the hotel, i accidentally let it go, and it floated up to the high ceiling of the hotel lobby.

My grandmother is in this video! This was very nostalgic to watch, the carnival from my childhood. Very different from today.

I agree, more can always be done to make large events safer but I do find it strange that ppl want to change the main appeal of an event when it doesn't have a higher crime rate than other large events.

I went to the Carnival every year from 1982 to 2015, but just not the same now, it made me happy and the work that went into the carnival was wonderful, but some how i feel it has got little scary, the whole time on the news its about police numbers and gangs who go just to rob people. When you see this vid from 1973 it brings me such joy as even in the 80s and 90s it still had that something special, i hope it can get back to its true roots and be the happy Carnival it once was. As it brings people togather and must not be lost.
Those were really the better days of carnival..as children we use to love going there...the fashion, the food, the music....glad I experienced it all...

indigowarrior8 I guess this was because Mc Donald’s weren’t around yet(arrived in London in 1974) so no dodgy burgers and fattening french fries and glucose filled milkshakes. Plus the mass media wasn’t in full effect like nowadays.

I was born in July 1973 in Trinidad, but grew up playing mas.
Wow......so so much better than today's rubbish and proper music from talented people.No trouble and a proper carnival atmosphere.
The carnival started a couple of years after I lived in Notting Hill but the streets, the people and the music is very familiar.

I was a Little Boy back then. It was great times moving forward in a Multi cultured London. Love was in the Air and it was intoxicating. I felt the change was when Margaret Thatcher stepped into Power. Milk every morning at School was a treat to savour. When she took it away, I felt as if we Kids had done something really wrong. 1980's Youth clubs and Apprenticeships disappeared and by coincidence the National Front and Skinheads was on the scene. Fear was placed in Peoples Hearts and Minds. We had to go to School and the Shops in groups for Safety reasons. Indians and Pakistani's received continuous Physical bullying and we were attacked by the Police and Racists people. Punks got a kicking from Skinheads as well. If you walked from School on your own like I did. Getting spat on or racially abused was common placed. People really need to look at the Whole picture of our existence on this Earth. We are all here together and that will never change. So from tomorrow say Good Morning to three people of three different Nationalities everyday and watch the World change for the Better. It is down to Us. Peace.

Nice Times... Wish I could have experienced it back then - But honestly people, we live in different times so it is no surprise that Carnival did not stay frozen in a capsule from the 70's. I heard UK people throughout the years talking down the Carnival,but internationally it is still one of the best. People come from all over the planet(self included) for those 2 days in Notting Hill. Enjoy it while you can and don't take it for granted. Let's see what it becomes twenty years from now..

Nice to see old footage of the carnival in Engeland in the Netherlands we have also an small caribian carnival in (in the begining days) in Rotterdam (1984 - still going on) and yes also there is change alot in the time, my firstime as little kid with my parents/family was back in 1987

I note that you put Spanish speaking islands flags on parade, which is odd, seen as the footage is the UK Notting Hill Carnival, in 1973. 🇧🇧 🇩🇲 🇬🇩 🇬🇾 🇻🇨 🇱🇨 🇹🇹 🇦🇬 🇯🇲. West Indian (also known as Carribbean flag's), part of the Commonwealth, resident in the UK for many decades.
All the above (except for Jamaica) had a Carnival on their Island for many decades prior. Jamaica's first Carnival on their Island was in the early 90s. All the other Common Wealth Countries of West Indian background (people in the UK) were involved in the Notting Hill Carnival from the beginning. Claudia Jones was an activist from Trinidad responsible for bringing Carnival to Notting Hill in the UK.

Carnival was fun then and the society were more civilised and balanced. We never heard stabbings or Gang fights then.... good old days are long gone 😢
That's a lie. There were race riots in Nottinghill in the 50s (Teddy boys), 60s and 70s (Skinheads and Police). Black people were being stabbed and beaten up all the time. The media reported few of these assaults. This is why the carnival was introduced...to show a piece of the Caribbean. Do some research. Black people had a hard time. Skin heads, National Front, racists made it difficult for those who were invited here and also born here to relax and feel safe.

The early Carnival influence and organisation came from the Trinidadian community. The steel pans and soca, calypso and rapso were the main sounds. The event was fought for and self-organised and at times a bit chaotic, but not in a bad way. More a free for all. Kids had their own day with Meanwhile Gardens and all the playgroups coming together to manage the family atmosphere.
Some years later, perhaps as a way to regulate it and partly in response to lobbying, Carnival became more institutionalised. Outside funding meant having a lead organisation, committees, liaison with different branches of government and officials. And ofco urse a challenge to the community to have a vision and a plan.
I am not knocking the tieless work of anyone or any group, but it was also inevitable that "community control" was often interpreted in different ways and the stories of in-fighting was so very sad for many of us in the community.
There were external changes too, the steel pan sounds and movement. gave way to sound systems and static parties, rum punch gave way to things with more kick. This in turn brought in a different visitor crowd, and the much bigger police presence. Carnival's popularity grew beyond early expectations and the cost-benefits economic arguments about the 'Event' (it used to be a Celebration!) has led to it being very different today (not in Covid-2020!) - as we can all see from this excellent video.

the real carnival,,,,,, bornt in 1977 i was 4 weeks old at my 1st carnival, watchng this shows much free uk was back in 70s, and how diverse everyone was, and the fact harrow rd was used aswell as ladbroke grove is what makes it very frustrating, its far too small and restricted nowadays, kids will never experience what it really was like in the early days, parties everywhere, open doors, they should never have changed the route of procession parade ....

I'm currently working on a project creating short 2 minute films about the history and culture surrounding Notting Hill Carnival and am hoping to get some archive footage of some of the very first Carnivals!
I came across this and am hoping to use some snippets. Do you know who I would need to speak to about this? I can't seem to find an email or contact attached to this channel and the website link for Eyeline Publications doesn't work.
I'd like to find out about who has the rights to it and if I'd be allowed to re-use parts - few seconds of the footage here and there to provide context.

Somehow both the carnival outfits and the music seem more authentically Caribbean!
No sign of rap music or half naked dancers.
Today's Notting Hill Carnival reminds me more of the South American carnival versions with their distinct outfits - not really Caribbean!

+Kat B Would you agree that today's Notting Hill Carnival has much more the South American/Brazilian flavour to it, rather than a Caribbean one? Yes, there are elements of Caribbean culture in the music and types of outfits worn, but it seems to have morphed into more of a hybrid between the two. Now some people might think that's a good thing; it depends on personal taste. It was merely an observation on my part, and you are free to agree with that - or not!

I have seen carnival evolved from fully clothed costumes to bikini costumes. But the children costumes have improved. That's why I'm more involved in production and designing of children's costumes

This was the only year i went to N.H carnival....my uncle had moved to london from south wales. My parents took us to visit him during the carnival. I was 5, id never met a black person up till then.
I remember having a fried dumpling for the 1st yime too and it was delicious.
Later we were at a tube station...my dad lifted me on, the train, turnrd to get my sister.....when the doors shut and the train left. With 5 year old me in it and my family still on the platform. 😂
Thankfully a guard must have seen/ heard my dad shouting and it stopped after a few seconds.
I remember that weekenf so clearly.
I had a baloon from the carnival....when we got back to the hotel, i accidentally let it go, and it floated up to the high ceiling of the hotel lobby.
Talk about looking with rose tinted specs. Check out 1976 Notting hill riots. Then virtually every year for a decade after that.
