    Camden and the market was a bohemian, multicultural space with an eclectic array of stalls selling artisan and second hand treasures. I lived in Kings Cross and loved to walk down the canal to the lock at the weekend.

    Notice how people seem relaxed and fairly quiet, and a bit weary of the camera. Everyone seems to make alot more noise now specially when a camera is put in front of them.

    Best yime there in early early 70's. Roundhouse, Chalkfarm, just up the rd and huge squatting scene and alternatives doung music, arts, helping obtain housing working with the council, first health shop and cafe ran by a guy called Catweazle who cycled around India in the 60's. 6 pm news did a feature on the police brutality which the local alternatives filmed. Had an old war siren set up in what was Prince of Wales Crescent that was turned on when the 'meat wagons' (police vans) turned up and everyone piled into the street to stop them doing their dirty work and filmed them. Was truly great. Left us alone but eventually houses knocked down by the new corporates, everything commercialised and ruined. 80's lost it 90' tried reviving but for many it just became another mass produced same old same old. Shame.

    Back when London was safe and actually somewhat affordable to live in. In fact that was broadly true up to 2008 or so.
    Oh well.

    • @person.X.
      @person.X. ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It wasn't any safer then than it is now. In fact worse. The crime rate back then was dire. I speak from personal experience from living in London in this era.

    • @JohnnyFriendly
      @JohnnyFriendly ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@person.X. Agreed. What is it with all this fake nostalgia these days?
      I hung out in Camden a lot during the '80s and it was rough; night time in London was definitely NOT safe at all during the '80s, far safer now.
      Nor was it really affordable, not sure where that myth came from.
      I lived in a crummy bedsit back then since that's all any of us could afford. Property prices were already rocketing up from around '85 or so

    • @person.X.
      @person.X. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnnyFriendly Y the 70s and 80s were appalling for crime in London. It started to improve in the second half of the 90s and is now better than ever for most people. In those earlier times burglary, car theft and muggings were much more common. These days the crime is more concentrated. In the area I grew up in things seem pretty tough for black boys with gang culture, stabbings etc. But generally things are much less edgy. And to my eyes at least race relations seem to be vastly improved despite all the media hype from right and left.

      @@JohnnyFriendlyIt was a bit more affordable, London rental costs as a proportion of income have increased massively - but it was never 'cheap'. And yea it was rough. I got hit with a bottle on Camden High St and still have the scars to prove it! Lots of rose tinted spectacle disorder going on here!

      @@admiralackbar9307 I was going to say the same thing -- not a single fat person to be seen. People definitely looked fitter, healthier, more stylish, happier and more engaged with their surroundings. I noticed that the men looked more masculine and normal too. It's probably because they were more physically active then. Gosh, this video shows how much society has declined since that time. People's heads are buried in their iPhones now.
