AFTER WORKING ON THIS FOR OVER A YEAR ON AND OFF AND BASICALLY HAVING TO REDO IT ONCE ITS FINALLY DONE
i get frustrated whenever i see ppl say theres nothing romantic about sora and rikus interactions so. i made this to use as a reference (and attempted to put it in chronological order but 0.2 made things kind of difficult lol)
mostly presented without commentary, but theres some notes here and there and also memes bc i couldnt help myself
i put 'probably' in the title bc i havent played og com/coded and also havent played days since it came out, so there MIGHT be something lost between them and the hd remakes. also never got more than like an hour or two in re:com but i THINK i covered everything from watching the cutscenes
BTW theres more gay moments in the novels (ie sora throwing his arms around riku during their kh2 reunion + him jumping on the glider and hugging riku during the xemnas battle), but i tried to only include the quotes for cutscenes that NEEDED the novel context to be gay (that i know of anyway; havent sat down and read any yet)

I am so committed to the theory that the memory about the meteor shower was between Sora and Riku-- and Namine/Kairi was not there at all.
Riku protects Sora from the meteor shower with a toy sword and then possibly gives him Sora's crown necklace which we have no origin for.
I think this is proven by the fact that Namine cant create new memories, just remix them. The fact that Sora and Riku remember the SAME memory means they may have been the only 2 people present at the time.
Kairi's lucky charm is given to Sora during the events of KH1 so even though its Kairi's good luck charm that changes appearance to namine's star keychain, we have only ever seen Kairi give it to Sora later on in life than when they were kids.
I wouldnt normally think that they would make a gay pairing in a AAA game like this but the fact that everything is SO coded makes me feel like it could be true.

There is also paratext in the Light Novels. In the Book, in one of Riku Replica's memories, he draws a picture of himself and Namine smiling together because Namine cannot see her own face. Namine is framed in a golden light. Then, Namine gives a charm that can be hung around the neck. *cough* crown necklace *cough*
Later, when the Real Riku is trying to find Namine in the illusion of the Old Mansion, he finds a picture. A picture of Riku and Sora smiling together with Sora in the Halo of Light Namine was in in Riku Replica's Memories of that picture. And that picture being pulled down cause the wall to disappear that leads to Sora's pod.

When Namine placed the Meteor promise, right after that, Sora and Riku Replica get in a heated argument. Now, when Sora pulls out the charm he has, we know the charm made from the card is in "Riku's" pocket. "Riku" Knows this. So why does seeing Sora's charm freak him out so bad?
Nevertheless, we see Namine make an edit to his Heart and then "Riku" assumes his must be the Real one, and then they fight.
But here is the thing, why didn't "Riku" just assume Namine gave Sora one, too? Why did Namine have to edit directly?
My working theory is that the Meteor promise involved something worn on the neck, but Sora pulled it from his pocket. Further, the crown necklace is around Sora's neck already. So, suddenly, the True Memories of that situation contradict what is happening now. So Namine directly edits the story in that moment so to Riku Replica, it becomes impossible that Namine could have ever give anything to Sora, therefore the contradiction can be pushed under the rug.
Edit: Another interesting point, when Sora fights Vexen the second time, Vexen asks whether the memories of Namine, or the memories of Twilight Town are "more Real'. Sora immediate goes for the Namine memories and assumes the Twilight memories are fake. But it seems like both Memories are different versions of the same thing. Twilight Town memories are the Memories form in Roxas's soul that live in the Darkness of Sora's Heart. Namine memories are Memories of Riku and Sora altered by Namine's Darkness that connect through Sora's Darkness. So, they both exist through the same process, though Namine does it more intentionally.

In the KH3 Kairi and Sora paopu fruit scene, it's worth noting that neither of them eat them. I felt it was significant since the phrase was always 'share a paopu fruit' i.e. 1 fruit and both people would eat it together. It felt more like Kairi brought them based on the shared memories they had, like a symbol of their friendship. I honestly wouldn't have been suprised if she wouldn't have offered one to Riku as well if he hadn't expressed a desire to sit alone for a while. Anyway, it just felt less romantic and more close friendship to me. The paopu has become a bit of an inside joke/friendship lore seemingly.

@@mikotoh I absolutely did! I've read entire essays about Soriku, but nothing is more telling than the actual cutscenes, even without much context you can feel it's not just a story about friendship when it comes to them.
Also your additions from the novel were just 👌, and the montage is immaculate (that zoom on KH3D Riku's dumb smile as he's about to roast Sora with all the love in his heart was just, the best!).
I completely forgot about the small poems at the end of CoM, they're so sweet!
I really wish the english did a better job at conveing the important terms consistently, I'll die on the hill that CoM is the one who suffered the most from this, KH3 is probably second on the list and it's most likely due to the ENG version having been made almost simultaneously to the JP version.

When I played KH1 and 2 back in the early 00s I didn't even know what gay was yet but I was like "they're in love" about Soriku 💀 I was like, 9 when KH2 came out and still stanned.
Ever since I read the Sleeping Realm Doc and looking how much hints they show of a romance it really made Sora and Riku characters so much better and beautiful really. Especially Riku.
It re-shapes the things Riku goes through and his willnglyness to protect his precious person. It’s more than a friendship but out of a true Love and his whole Arc after KH1 is incredible. He clearly was hiding his true feelings of abandonment from Sora and was only treating Kairi as a way to make Sora jealous, even though it could be Sora did like Her, it didn’t really help the complex feelings which caused his road to darkness possession. After he redeems himself his goal was to make sure Sora was happy and protected. He was even gonna disappear to spare him from seeing his Beast-Form. It really make his Character beautifully written and it captures that Disney Romance but with Gay men.
Sora is the same aswell. Riku belives that He can be happy without him but Sora proved him wrong. Hell even when they first leaves Destiny Islands the first thing on Sora’s Mind was finding Riku and Kairi. Sora didn’t go back after KH1 and instead goes to look for him. And after a long journey he breaks down in joy at finding him, even in his beast form he was just happy to have finally found him. DDD and KH3 really are great examples (Can’t forget to mention the Dearly Beloved Hearts singing and the Gayblade which itself is a parallel to the Dearly Beloved)
I also love the Disney Princess Parallels too. Like the Beauty and the Beast in Days and the Cinderella. It so easy to mis but at the same time easy to catch if you are paying close attention. Honestly Nomura portrayal of Romance is the best portrayal I’ve seen from media ever. He does it that is difficult to see but once you pay attention and catch it. You can tell it’s deliberate. I love that man so much (also shoutout to Michio Matsuura too for bringing these moments)

when mickey and riku are in the dark world for the first time, i included a notation at 2:30:45 about mickey using 'precious person' in japanese, instead of 'precious things'.
expanding on that, at 2:31:14, riku also says '(is this) the strength to protect the person most precious to me...?' in japanese (大切ãªäººã‚’守る強ã•ã‹ãƒ¼)
so both mickey AND riku acknowledge its now a precious person riku wants to protect, not 'things'.
Ok watching more of this and I just gotta say... Whether or not the creators intend for Soriku to be canon is such a mystery to me. Like okayyyy if they just wanted to make an intense bromance friendship story... why are you paralleling them with every other straight romantic Disney couple they meet.
There's no Soriku in KHUX but I'll be damned if Ephemer and player aren't IN LOVE. It's great bc KHUX is gay no matter what gender you play as bc Strelitzia is heavily implied to have a crush on the player and the player and Ephemer are SO in love you could cut their romantic tension with a knife it's insane.

Yeah, in Union the Soriku stuff is mainly in player and ephemer, and the Disney couples continually as usual (in Japanese more as always) making parallels to Sora and Riku as kh does

It's so that Riku looks physically stronger and a more capable fighter than Sora which is where a lot of Sora's insecurities stem from especially in ths early KH1 story. The age gap between Riku and Sora is the exact same as Sora and Kairi being only a year apart but lots of people just assume Sora and Kairi should be together because they're a boy and girl despite their on screen chemistry being very little and thematically it makes less sense to the overall narrative. Riku and Sora both represent darkness and light while both Sora and Kairi are just there to represent light. The story of KH centres around darkness and light ultimately trying to coexist.

What I hate is their depiction in Yaoi where he looks older than he is in the canon games. Don't worry the bundle we bought has all the games from KH1 to KH3 (including non-numbered games!) So I'm also excited to play it! So far we're doing it by release date order.
I've had the original KHBBS in my old PSP and my sibling and I would always play it. So getting all the games while we're older was like an achievement 😂
And as for your video, I saw kh3 demo and played it while sibling was watching. We liked it and I saw your video in my fyp so we watched it (lol my sibling watched all 3 hours of it) and decided we're getting everything 💀

just an FYI, the story so far bundle does NOT come with either days or re:coded as games. it has them as cutscene movies only. and while ive heard the re:coded movie is fine, the days movie is lacking a lot of the emotional connections you build to characters from the original DS version by walking in their footsteps, so to speak. for example, you miss out on all of roxas' personal diaries (and some written by other org xiii members). and disney worlds are summarized in a few sentences. so obvs roxas and axel discussing what love really is after roxas visits beasts castle has a lot more weight to it than a summary simply saying 'roxas and axel discussed love'. emulate it if you have to (i can actually tell you how to do if you wanted), just, please, experience days firsthand if you can. otherwise, ive heard everglows video series on the game is a LOT better than the one bundled with 1.5.
yeah my experience with kh is intrinsically tied to my sibling too lol. like some of my earliest memories are of watching him play kh1 (and my dad too but to a lesser extent). and then, when kh2 came out and my brother got it in his easter basket, i got all upset because we got kh1 as the first game for our ps2 for xmas around when it came out, so that was a 'family' game, whereas now kh2 was 'his' game (i know, second grader on the spectrum logic lol)
(i also distinctly remember asking my brother if he was going to get the original chain of memories, as he was the older sibling and therefore bought the games that werent gifted to us. his response? 'no, its on the GBA, it wont be relevant to the second game.' :^) )

As a soriku shipper ive noticed something in Jimmy's journal only acknowledges Kairi's deep feelings for Sora but people tend to say well its show don't tell.
But by that logic that applies to Sora and Riku. Im like 100% sure Riku in the same boat as Kairi in holding deep feelings for Sora.
But that begs the question with Sora i think he might have had feelings for kairi whether platonic or not same with Riku.

I would like to point out the first time Roxas cries is because he hears Riku's "Come on, Sora. I thought you were stronger than that". A Phrase that becomes "You don't believe that, I know you don't" or "I believe in you'. I repeat, Roxas's first cry is because Riku's Believes in Sora, and that causes Roxas to grow his Heart.
What makes him grow his heart are Xion and Axel. What Riku does is to weaken it using Sora's memories with Roxas.

It is bitter emphasis. Noticed how he leans in on the pause. The idea that the Key blade (which his Heart unconsciously gave) would make Sora pay less attention to him, upsets him. But Riku has to try to act "cool" about it... that incongruence is the pause.
