Other than Pooh, I think another character that fills a similar role is Hercules. Another character that has interacted with Sora in his three mainline entrees. Was I ever truly a child ? Or did I just pretend to be one ? That what's this video and comment section make me question.
When I was a child, I tried to watch and play stuff that made me feel and was made for grown ups (for example, at the age of 3, I already played God of War). There was some children stuff, of course. But...I don't know, they seem to be set far and in between(ish), looking back now.
I constantly craved for stimulation. Stimulation that most children's stuff just didn't provide. And truth be told, these days, I even hate having liked some of the already few children's stuff I had.
It's a fact, I still enjoy Disney and some of its content, always have (but some of the original stories are simply better, like Alice's). But...I don't know, it feels little somehow. In comparison to the inner child others have, I feel as if mine is on some sort of life support. It's allowed to go around the hospital freely, but can not leave it.
The fact I actively despise "Winnie the Pooh" ever since the first game must be proof of that.

i LOVE the theory that the winnie the pooh world and story is a representation of sora's innocence. it's always hurts my heart to see sora grow up but that's inevitable. maybe sora can pass the book onto a younger character in the series, reassuring pooh he'll always be needed one way or another.

I'm not sure if it's just because Winnie the Pooh was an important part of my childhood, but when I first entered the 100 Acre Woods in Kingdom Hearts, I felt such an immense amount of joy. I found myself talking to Pooh as if I was in the story and getting excited whenever another character showed up. And that music brought such a strange sense of nostalgia that I've never felt before or since, I began tearing up several times. I found out that my mum sung that song to me as a lullaby as a baby, it really was an indescribable feeling.
Edit: I wasn't particularly worried about finding all the treasure chests, but after finding out about the pages I spared no expense. This was now a top priority.

Realistically, his mother must be absolutely mentally and emotionally destroyed, presuming her (I assume) only son was completely missing and possibly dead for several years before he finally turned up.
It's a bit of a missed opportunity by square and nomura that they NEVER adressed this. That they didn't address the sheer trauma this must have caused her and possibly his father (no confirmation on whether he still has one, of course.)
It was such a weird decision on Square's part to have his mother call out to him like that only for that whole plotpoint to be dropped instantly. If they had made the decision to have sora be an orphan, this would have been more fitting, and it would make those friendships sora makes along the way feel all the more neccessary and deserved.

This world is the one I always look forward to because it feels like the most innocent and childlike (at least to me) like the safe happy dream that protects you from the nightmares (or heartless in the Kh context) while you sleep

I enjoy the nightmares once in a while. I find them fascinating study cases.
I can not deny though the need of innocence for protection as well (especially when they're animatronics). I suppose I enjoy a balance of both, which is why "Alice in Wonderland" (OG version) is among my favorite stories. It has just the right amount of reality check and funny ridiculousness.

This made me very teary eyed. Pooh and Sora are two of my favorite fictional characters ever, and I've always enjoyed seeing them together in the games. And this video made me appreciate their friendship even more. Something that I also find interesting is that Sora and Pooh remind me a lot of Sora and Kairi ( and I know I'm not alone in thinking that ). Just like how Pooh wants Sora to always stay with him and doesn't want that to change, Kairi wants Sora ( and Riku as well ) to always stay with her because she doesn't want things to change. I believe Nomura said in an interview that Kairi is meant to represent the fear of growing up, change, and drifting apart from the people you love ( or at least, he said something along the lines of that ). And the line Pooh said to Sora when he returned in KH3 is the same one uses by Kairi at the end of KH2. This perspective on both pairings and their relationships made me appreciate them even more when I learned of this.

All I know is 100 acre wood was not my favourite place to be, but over the years and over the replays of these games i've developed an appreciation for the 'vibe' of this world. The music, the asthetics (the colour of the sky lol), the characters etc. Is now a world I actually look forward to being apart of and spending time in when playing the games, rather than the attitude of it being a 'chore' to get through, or just tick off the completion list..
Although I also like to believe - the fairy tale book symbolism that's present in these 'stories' has some overlap with the book of prophecies being represented as a fundamental archetype of the events in the KH series as a whole being; in a way - it's own book of fairytales.
At the very least, the missing page(s) and incomplete stories...

    @Dragon_Lair 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

I really do like your take. I disagree on one thing you said at the beginning where you said we don't see the strain on Sora. We see it plenty of times.
He's down in Traverse Town when he first meets Donald and Goofy and Donald tells him "no frowning, no sad face" and Sora forces a big smile on his face that the two of them found absolutely hilarious. He's definitely down in Deep Jungle when he effectively abandons Donald and Goofy when he first arrives so he can look for Riku and Kairi. He definitely was down when they betrayed him.
When you read Roxas' journal in 358/2 Days it is revealed that just about every time Roxas dreamed about one of Sora's memories it resulted in him waking up crying. Sora was going through a lot but was forcing himself to put on a happy face.
Winnie the Pooh was not only a reprieve and a break for Sora, I think it also helped remind Sora what he's fighting for each and every game. The small moments where the biggest problems he and his friends were facing in the book were small and simple things, and as the games progressed the problems became bigger or more personal.
In KH1, aside from meeting Pooh Bear he then meets Piglet and has to help Pooh get some honey. It's such a little problem but with Pooh's way of solving it with the balloon it reminded Sora of Destiny Islands, I think. They were making a raft and were gathering supplies in their own way, and it probably felt to Sora rather silly in comparison to the gummi ship now that he was actually in a rocket but it was still good times with good friends and that's exactly what the Hunny Tree was. Then there was Pooh getting stuck in Rabbit's door, helped largely by Sora who found the honey hidden in the rafters and seeing how much Rabbit's preparation is undone by one hungry bear but also how easily he forgives Pooh and wants to help him. Then there is just bouncing with Tigger and Roo and having fun simply for the sake of it.
In KH2 we see Sora visibly upset but putting on a happy face when Pooh forgot him. One thing I think is severely overlooked in this game though is is that is also what happened to everyone else. Literally everyone forgot about Sora, Donald and Goofy while Namine was fixing his memory. Sure, they played it off as a joke in Hallow Bastion when they found out that the Final Fantasy crew forgot about him, or when Sora gave Kairi a hint during the Roxas prologue, but Pooh's whole story shows how being forgotten by close friends affected Sora and having one friend right there not remembering him clearly bothered Sora even if he put on a happy face for Pooh.
KH3 unfortunately was super short in terms of story but I think mechanically it worked out as well. Sora got into cooking with Remy as a way to boost his stats and enjoy good food, which is really a simple pleasure in life, and just like how it boosts stats, taking the time to enjoy the simple things in life can have huge dividends in your overall day because there is less stress and less worries weighing you down. And the 100 Acre Wood in KH3 was actually one of the best places to gather standard ingredients for cooking via the minigames, as well as honey for those meals.
Sora, like Christopher Robin, is growing up and has less time for play and simple things, but I think just like the movie Christopher Robin where an adult Christopher Robin relearned the innocence of childhood and how to sit and do nothing while having fun, how to play and have fun again, I think Sora in KH4 will be needing to take time to remember how to enjoy the small and simple things again after everything that happened in the Keyblade War and being stuck in Quadratum with the Master of Masters, that remembering a silly old bear will continue to help ground him.

I love the Disney Winnie-the-Pooh franchise! I hope it continues to appear in the Kingdom Hearts series. I Love all the Characters such as Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, Roo, Gopher, Heffalump & Woozle. I'm glad that Heffalumps are now being used as real good creatures in the Disney animated Winnie-the-Pooh ever since Lumpy debuted. But I also wish that Woozles would start being used as real friendly creatures along with the Heffalumps. I think it'll only be fair if both Heffalumps and Woozles are loved and turn out to be real friendly creatures instead of being imaginary, scary, honey-stealing, nightmarish creatures. I hope Disney will make a Winnie-the-Pooh movie where it introduces a new friendly Woozle character. And maybe the new Woozle character could also appear in one of the future Kingdom Hearts games. I hope Disney makes more Winnie-the-Pooh movies and shows. Speaking of which, there's a new Disney show called Playdate with Winnie-the-Pooh in development. I always had loved Winnie-the-Pooh and I will always love Winnie-the-Pooh.

So I have a theory/headcanon after watching this: What is 100 Acre Woods is a world that finds its way to kids who need freindship? Similar to how Traverse Town is a world for refugees of other worlds. If Christopher Robin DID exist in the KH universe, he would have eventually grown up and moved on. But later on the book ends up in the hands of Sora, who needs the freindship as you discussed. By the time KH3 rolls around, Sora has grown up to the point where he doesn't need it as much anymore. He's grown so much and is ready to move onto another chapter of his life. Maybe if Sora doesn't need the book anymore, it will find it's way to another kid in need of freindship...
I personally don't think this is true as I don't think Christopher Robin would be in the KH universe anywhere and that Sora is the replacement, but it's a nice thought to have. Again, more of a headcanon if anything.

Even when I was a kid playing KH1 and KH2, I knew there was something special about Pooh and the 100 Acre Woods. I couldn't put it into words, but it just felt so... different. I know what it is now, and I agree completely with you. I think that the 100 Acre Woods was and is a bastion of peace and friendship in a world trying to tear Sora apart, even when he's got his own friends, and even as he continues to get older.
After all, we all have at least a few things from childhood we think back on fondly, or maybe go back to revisit every so often, don't we? I like to think so.

This made me wonder if kh4 will have soras old friends turn against him, forcing him to fight the very people he loved. And pooh will be the one exception, where until the others who are so bitter and angry at sora for whatever happened inbetween the games, pooh will just be as happy as ever to see his good friend. That light could then help sora find a way to reunite with his friends and connect everyone's hearts once again

Ya know I never really thought about it like that, but you're kinda right, as someone who wasn't looking forward to playing the world on my first playthrough I was surprised how much I liked it I found the interactions endearing and liked the contrast between Sora and the 100-acre wood characters, (And I'm one of those weird people who like playing minigames so I had some fun with those) and I definitely want to see more like you do, also I can guarantee you freaked the f- out when you saw this world for the first time. He's Christopher Robin. Like the in universe Christopher Robin it's damn beautiful.
Edit: for sure OG CR died during the events of Mal's invasion. As Merlin had the undestroyed book and the destroyed book on both sides of the conflict the pages themselves are exclusively in worlds with a member of the Council.
    Agrabah-
    Atlantica-
    Halloween Town-
Monstro- (we are told in a scene Hook happened to be Riku's interstellar Captain) Monstro could have also swallowed a dead member's place as at least three are implied.
Pongo and Perdita and whichever one of Roger and Anita that survived and invented advanced gummi weaponry against one of fallen implied members.
    In first reply.
But what's the worst implication is that Merlin watched Christopher die in front of his face. And could do nothing to stop it. Hence why he mobilizes quickly whenever Sora needs him as Sora comes in at the age Christopher probably died at and the confirmed time dilation means he probably was brought back at his mid 20s age. Since Ienzo became a nobody as a child and was brought back as a young adult. His nobody being the reflection of his mental age but his actual self being even older than his nobody shows that he was and Christopher would have also been reassembled as a young adult. 😢
Somebody get Ewan McGregor for IV as the adult badass version of CR. 😂

Your not wrong in feeling this way about Pooh in kingdom hearts. I loved that Pooh's book is literally solace for Sora and how crazy his journey is. For a JRPG, having places or mini games in it is important to break up the gameplay. Most final fantasy games have some things/moments like this to help break up what would feel tiresome after a certain amount of hours out in a game like kingdom hearts. Tetsuya Nomura is a good story teller. (Although it feels unhinged at times it works right?)

Just recently finished another playthrough of KH1, it had been a while and I had freshly turned 30. After completing 100 Acre Wood I was sobbing. Actual sobbing when Sora appeared on the cover of the book for the first time holding hands with Pooh Bear. It’s funny because at 9 when I first played the game I didn’t have this reaction because I was still a little kid. As a teenager childhood was still so close. Even at 16 you’re still very much a kid.
But at 30 it’s so different. Everything is so different now. The world, myself, everything. But Pooh Bear is still here, the same silly old bear. I cried more at that than the actual end of the game.

I'm not sure if it'd make sense to bring back 100 Acre in KH4 since we're in an entirely different realm, but I wonder if this weakened connection may play a role in a future title. New paths for hearts to traverse: Sora gets a kid that reconnects him with Pooh and that lost childhood innocence. 😢 Just a future hypothesis of course lol.
Though I would like it if it's Kairi that reconnects Sora with Pooh, I just feel like she's going to be pushed aside again. Hopefully that won't be the case and maybe Kairi will be our connection with Disney and Sora in Quadratum. But I have my doubts lol.
I still like the hypothesis some kh fans have that Pooh is symbolic of Kairi, found that to be interesting.
Also I was disappointed too in how kh 3 felt like it treated Pooh's world as a side note. Like a lot of things in kh 3, it felt more like Sora was detached from each world and just going through the vibes.
Tbh though, it could be possible Nomura did this on purpose, showing Sora's detachment, possibly foreshadowing his future in kh.

My brother has never understood why I love 100 acre wood so much, and this video sums it up perfectly. Pooh is essential to Sora's understanding of himself as a child and as an Adult. the wood gave Sora a place to play, away from the eyes of those who expected so much from him, and allowed him to have that last connection to his childhood that had been forcfully taken from him on destiny islands.
In KH2 Pooh is the missing link in Sora's story to truely allow him to heal from having his memory taken. By helping pooh, by being patient and loving, Sora learns to be patient and compassionate to himself for the hole in his memory where castle oblivion should be.
Three upset me, but it upset me because it reminded me that Sora is growing up and so am I.
I wish they'd had more of pooh, and I wish we'd seen Sora form a new relationship to him, maybe like a parent child thing, where sora mediates their games and simply finds peace in watching Pooh and his friends play. I don't know.

I think you are correct to assume that pooh is the embodiment of Childhood because not only is the darkness/heartless are NOT allowed to spawn there but the facf that every character is kind, sweet, naive and simple... something you would see through a childs eyes.
Pooh could honestly be Sora's comfort friend 🥰

I always had a small, lingering hope kingdom hearts gets declared cannon to winnie the pooh lore, but i doubt it'l ever happen. Good video! Thanks for making it :D

Who wouldn't be friends with Pooh truly is heartless. That's like chick shredding.

I loved Winnie the Pooh ever since I was a little kid waking up on Saturday mornings to watch the cartoons, so I was happy that the Winnie the Pooh world didn’t have the heartless and darkness in it! It felt like a safe haven, a place to relax a bit when I was stuck on a boss or didn’t feel like moving forward in the main game, just like the show felt for me irl. It did always feel like there was a special place in Sora’s heart for Pooh, and their relationship is a good way of explaining that even if we get older and forget the things we loved, we can always find our way back to them.
I’m glad you made this video-really happy to know that there other Winnie the Pooh fans who hold a special place in their hearts for that silly ol bear! ☺️

Kingdom Hearts is to me what the Hundred Acre Woods are to Sora; a return to something familiar. A reprieve from the day-to-day. Returning to the Kingdom Hearts series is like reuniting with good friends.

I know some people who hate the whole Winnie the Pooh storyline in the KH games and it's sad to me. I mean, I get it, if you didn't grow up with Pooh, his inclusion in the series can seem like a hinderence rather than an addition. But as someone who also loved this silly old bear as a child (and still do), I can't agree enough with your assessment of Pooh's value to Sora's character arc and how he and the Hundred Acre Wood gang help him grow as a youth into a young man.

In a game that was already filled to the brim with absolutely mindboggingly dissapointing decisions by the devs (specifically nomura), the decision to have the hundred acre woods in kingdom hearts 3 be three candy crush games in a row, no real character growth or important plot related stuff or just casual good character interactions between pooh and sora, was absolutely infuriating to me.
The hundred acre woods was always one of my favorite worlds to visit, it always felt so much more of a personal thing for Sora. We saw him here both at his calmest, his most carefree, but also as his most caring and brotherly self. In the real world he had to be a warrior, in the hundred acre woods, he could be both a kid his own age and an older brother figure to this gentle doofus of a bear.
I saw it, as you do, as a general thematic line that essentially spells out Sora's character growth, but much more so, I consider Sora's story to be an absolute tragedy. One that was almost entirely beyond his control. All he could do was fight, with a smile on his face, but sadness in his heart. (even if he doesn't show it.)
Let's consider that Sora's one wish was to be together with his friends and play on the island all day. He gets violently ripped away from his home through forces he doesn't understand nor fully understands at the end of his now 4 year long yourney. All while his one concern during this violent interaction was saving Kairi and Riku.
He gets thrust into this savior role for the whole universe on account of having a pure heart. From here on out he has to constantly live a life of danger and violence. Every world is filled with it. He has to live with almost constant physical pain and the threat of death hanging over not only him, but the entire known universe, should he fail.
Luckily goofy and Donald are there to cheer him up and be his new friends (and they are GOATed for that. Even donald, who seemed more business-oriented than the ever lovable goofy.)
His closest friend (and rival) betrays him because of sheer jealousy, even though all Sora wants is to just be friends with everybody. He has to see his other closest friend and love interest be turned into a comatose plant, all while nobody can give him any answer as to how to save her.
Then, once he has done all the hard, mentally and physically challenging things to get to the point where he believes he can save both riku and Kairi, his identity as the keyblade bearer gets stripped from him, his new friends abandon him, and for reasons he doesn't understand, his once closest friend becomes a sworn enemy, all out of his control despite his best efforts and intent. Only Beast manages to stay by his side because Beast is even more GOATED than Goofy and Donald in this moment. (motherfucker travelled the worlds through sheer force of will alone then sticks by Sora till the end. Abolute unit and madlad.)
And the final icing on the cake? He has to sacrifice himself to save the one he loves. And only through plottwisty shenanigans he could never have predicted, did he get revived, unknowingly at the cost of a portion of his being.
And then? When all things seem to be going well? Turns out there is no turning back the clock. If he saves the worlds, the cost is that he will be transported to some other random world entirely, locked off completely from ever realistically returning to Destiny island. Forever removed from his two best friends. Once again, at least goofy and donald are there to back him up.
This poor boy's entire story, including the tragedy of sitting in a memory-pod or whatever for a full year, missing an entire year of his teenage life, is about being forced to grow up at a time when he should be having a blast as a young kid, doing stuff kids his age should do. It's about things never being able to return to normal (although kh2 does, of course, end in a happy ending for everybody except roxas, namine, xion and the heretofore unknown Terra, Ventus and Aqua). It's about Sora losing everything he cares about and being powerless to make things go back to normal, even though he will try regardless, because that's who he is at heart. Sheer indomitable will to do the right thing.
The hundred acre woods was a reprieve from all that. It was a place where he could truly be himself, be both the caring helper AND the joyful kid. Where he could truly experience friendship free from the bonds of duty and circumstancial, beneficial alliances. Pooh is a true friend, in the truest sense of the word. It breaks my heart every time the both of them have to go their seperate ways.
So yes, I fully agree. While at the end of the games, I'd say Donald and Goofy have truly become his best buddies, Pooh is still on another level entirely. It's like Pooh represents Sorah's lost innocence and childhood.
