Another interesting video.👍 I have both locos and love them both. For me the biggest issue, is the Piko 25t lower battery power. Otherwise I would rate them pretty much equal. Nice to see your new layout taking shape. 😁

Thanks for your thoughts. I love different perspectives. In the end I love them more or less both the same too. In addition to the lower battery power as you mentioned, I wish it could pull a touch better. But again, love them both!

I just realised your tank farm is just flipped over buckets with railings added. Great idea! I was thinking of using large tin cans that restaurants might use. Also it was a good video, but I dont think I will have trains that nice for a long time.

Lol. You know, I’m working on a video about those oil tanks. 😊 ONE Piko oil tank would cost me 300 dollars Canadian. The plastic buckets cost 10 dollars and with some ingenuity, elbow grease and another 20 for bits and paint and voila!

(Now I wish I used empty metal paint cans because they would have a better profile. But we experiment and try, right?)

Excellent video and review of two interesting locomotives. I had issues with my Mamod Boulton and eventually I fitted the body to a Roundhouse chassis. I have three of the Piko GE 25T switchers and they get the most use on the CFR. 24:49

Thanks! I’d heard of people with Boulton issues. Was your older? Mine is solid as a tank. I’m sorry to hear you had issues with it. Of course, a Roundhouse chassis would be great.

A very interesting take and analysis on two juxtaposition locos. Never seen anything like it before so it seems like you’re leading the field. Nice to see pros and cons for both and as you point out, suited to different rolls but great fun with either.

Hi thanks for the great videos on the Mamod Bolton very good. I’ve got both of the electric trains from Mamod the tram and the Bolton very well made. Thank you gary

Thanks so much Gary! I appreciate your comments. I like the Mamod tram but I’d want it with diesel sound and I’d make mods to make sure it looked like a diesel tram and not steam.

Thanks for getting back. I just wanted to tell you about the battery on the Bolton when I collected mine from Mamod because I don’t live very far from Mamod. They told me don’t let it run out of power because if he does that have a recovery charger has to be used to recover it, did you know this?

@@garygriffiths9905 I did not know this. By habit, though, I try not to let batteries like that run completely out. I have learned that from experience. I’m glad you felt you should tell me though. Very friendly. 😊

I finally had a chance to watch this video, which is excellent. I may have rated them slightly different, but ratings are subjective, however i think you were pretty fair, overall.

Thanks John. Yes indeed, always very subjective. I don’t mind the less scale appearance of the Mamod while some people don’t like that. Different opinions are always interesting. I’m curious about a point or two where you had a different view than me.

Since you asked: Having been in the position of approving purchases for the plants that I managed for over 30 years, I often had to make or require similar analysis. For me, cost needed to be on your main list. You know the old adage, "you get what you pay for". In a way, due to the extreme price difference between the two locomotives, it's like comparing a Chevy Spark to a Cadillac. Also, IMHO, the realism aspect required more weight. As a modeler, I strive for as much realism as possible. I'm certainly not a rivet counter, but I like my models to be close to the real thing. But, as they say, "your railroad, your rules". So, listening tp your video and your explanations, I believe your assessment was fair overall. Anyway, the video was really good. You make some excellent videos! I wish I could do as well.

Excellent! I’m currently thinking about getting either a Boulton or a Roundhouse Merseysider (I already have the Piko - Ronnie - and it’s likely to feature in an upcoming ‘Meet the Fleet’ series. I have replaced its handrails with metal, 2mm ss rod, and weathered it.
I think your video has sold me on the Mamod!! It’s about 60% of the price of the Roundhouse loco…

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks Nigel! I like the Merseysider, largely because it can come with sound. I don’t have any Roundhouse diesels but I do have two of their live steam locos, a used Sandy River 24 that came at a jaw droppingly good price, and a new Bertie with Jennie tender and RC. I asked them to paint it War Department Grey and to my susprise when I asked they added a WD logo on the tank side! I have play lists of these locos. So from these engines I know the quality of the Roundhouse product. Their workmanship is better than Mamod and their diesels look to be better representations and less generic, but I have to say my Boulton has really surprised me in a good way!

The only drawback to the Merseysider is that its control system is a sprung wheel and trigger pistol shaped thing. It’s designed to be one handed which I can’t really use so the Fosworks in the Mamod clinches it for me. I’ve installed 5 so far, very familiar with the system.

Wonderful. You are a very clever man. I hope Piko answers you about the odd horn and brake sound . On the mammoth sound, maybe look at a replacement sound controller for it but it be a challenge. I have never seen where to get the mammoth one.
Also I would love to know your switch system and it's mechanics. I think you already did a video but I am just learning operation style railroading so any advice or how toos on it would be useful..thank you for a wonderful video.

I see. Didn't really think about it, as I've only used controllers that use potentiometers for speed control. Using a button style switch probably would feel a little unnatural, and fatiguing to the thumb I'd presume. @@Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
