I'm glad Danny brought up inkers at 40:55. I think those who primarily inked are greatly under appreciated as artists. I can remember reading comics as a kid, and I couldn't figure out why one of my favorite artist's work would suddenly look no so hot from one week to the next. At that young age, I didn't realize what the inker did or the impact they have on the art. That's why I think John Romita, Sr. should have definitely been on your list (over MacFarlane and Byrne, especially). Not only was his artwork great AND prolific, but he pretty much oversaw most of the artwork produced by Marvel in the late 60s and 70s. His pencils were some of the tightest you'll ever see, and his ability to ink--in addition to his pencil work--to me, is just unrivaled.

Dave, the artist that did Showcase 79 is the same artist that drew your favorite romance cover.

It would be cool to hear that photographer tell stories about his interactions with comic book artists.

Sorry I missed this. Will definitely watch the recording this evening.
I think that it is a great way to approach these lists. "Who would we remove from the list, to add this other artist?" If you can't do this, and you still feel this artist needs to get recognized, you either make it a Top 11 list or add them to the Honorable Mentions (as you corrected yourself).

Disagree somewhat with your list (big surprise!😊). But obviously subjective and appreciate the time and energy you put into this. Very fun discussion. I think a couple of your guys would be most underappreciated on my list (vs best). Perez is my favorite superhero artist of all time but I can't argue with Kirby. It was a little difficult to nail down your criteria. I also think Mac Raboy deserves honorable mention.
Sienkiewicz pronounced Sin-Kev-Itch. Toth rhymes with "both."
Please take my comments in spirit they are meant, loved the fun conversation. Thank you guys!

For what it's worth, I'm a big Ditko fan, but I'm not at all bothered that you left him off your lists. I hope no one was actually UPSET about it! Ditko himself wouldn't have been upset about it. Great discussion, by the way. Thoroughly enjoyable. Dave, I really miss my own Freak Brothers and Fat Freddy's Cat comics that I bought in the seventies (in my own puberty days).

How about top ten lists of greatest comic artists by era? The main thing I collect right now are the newsprint giant size and jumbo comics. And I am not talking about slabbed comics, I buy them to read. Gene Colan was probably my early favorite, his art style was perfect for Tomb of Dracula.

I agree with the assessment with regards to Steve Ditko. We all have our opinions, and there is no doubt Ditko's early impact on the industry, but he is far from being one of the best comic book artists.

He didn't draw semi-clad women, or even particularly pretty women, so that really hurts him in the popularity stakes with most comic book nerds.

If you like Hughes and Campbell for the "good" girl art, what about Jim Balent?

How different would have the silver surfers origin been if kirby had plotted it. I dont thin̈k it would have been about love. Also if you did a top ten comic strip artist list, how different it would be yet a lot of that top ten was probably reprinted in comics and those people were not evevn considered for your top ten. At least three people on your list worked on comic stŕips.

Jack Kirby didn't design Spider-Man just because his cover was chosen for Amazing Fantasy # 15. It is well-known that Ditko had drawn a previous version of the cover which Stan Lee rejected (and which one must assume Kirby had available when he did his version). Kirby's association to Spider-Man relates to a previous idea he produced with Joe Simon in the 50's called the Silver Spider, which Ditko was also aware of. The Silver Spider, though, shared none of the features that made Spider-Man so unique, and which many historians agree were primarily created and developed by Ditko with Lee adding the dialogue once the stories were plotted and drawn. So to claim, as you do here, that Stan Lee and not Steve Ditko created Spider-Man is also historically false and I really hope you'll do some research to alter this view, as I personally find that more insulting than omitting Ditko from your list.

I don't think Steve Ditko even deserves an honorable mention. His artwork is mediocre. Most people who consider themselves Ditko fans are really Spider-Man fans who like Ditko for his contributions to the Spider-Man mythology. He was not an especially skilled artist.
