  • Ben and Lauren have been utilizing their Wallas Nordic DT and Wallas 86D for ten weeks. They share what they know about their new stove and oven's operation, why they chose to make the switch to diesel, and what they think about their new appliances after cooking on them for two and a half months.

    Very informative, thanks. I’m thinking about having an all diesel trailer built, and this is a piece of the puzzle I haven’t seen a whole lot of feedback on. Now I just need to find a diesel fired incinerating toilet.

      We have also been on the lookout for a diesel fired incinerating toilet but have yet to find one that will work for our application.

    Great video, thank you. I would enjoy a diesel cooktop as well, but I wonder whether there are some with more burners. Have a nice day, thank you.

    Totally new to me. I have been using diesel for my old optimus no 00 camp stove that's 60 years old

    I'm sure if you were crafty enough you could print a sticker to go over the Celsius printing to convert it to Fahrenheit. Might take a few tries and some trial and error though 😂 I wonder if a non stick grill pad would be useful to cover the top while cooking. Then you can just wash it in the sink like everything else.

      Thanks for the great tip! I think we are going to have to try the sticker thing. We did try a grill pad at one point but found that it was not rated at a high enough temperature for the ceramic surface. We did not want to chance ruining the stovetop with the grill mat melting. Since this video we have learned more about cleaning the cooktop and in the one year review we did I discussed the new method I am using that is working out well.

      @@rohdsteading5880 if you wanna try the pad thing again just search for "PTFE Teflon sheet" it's the same material McDonald's uses on their griddles. Super cool product and great review!! I really wanna get rid of all propane so I'm down to just diesel for the truck and camper and I had no idea these even existed!!

    There are a few 250watt solar blankets on the market.
    A kind of tarp with many small solar panels wired up on it for easy folding. And come with voltage controllers.

      Thanks for the lead. We have been looking into different solar options. Especially for the summer months when we would have many daylight hours and would be able to utilize the induction cooktop.

    Very helpful! I’m wondering if you still need and use the microwave? Would a microwave convection oven take away the need for the diesel oven? I use my microwave all the time.

    • @rohdsteading5880
      @rohdsteading5880  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We looked into purchasing a convection oven/ microwave to replace the propane oven. We do like to boondock though and the power consumption for the convection oven/ microwave was something we were concerned about. Lauren uses the oven quite often and we did not want to be limited to only using the stovetop when boondocking. The power consumption of the Wallace 86D is so low we don't have to worry about the power draw when we are not plugged in.

    Been watching and approving with much interest your reviews. Very good. In fact, due to you two, have done more ‘Tube level searches. A point I’ve not heard (ok… may have missed) was commentary about the noise… particularly if being used as heater. Experience? Thanks in advance.

    • @rohdsteading5880
      @rohdsteading5880  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as the noise on the outside of the RV it is silent. Which we love! We love being able to use it without disturbing our neighbors unlike some of our other equipment. Regarding the noise on the inside we know that there have been a few variations on the fan function in heater mode. A previous version of this stovetop had the function that when the heater top was lifted the fan would shut off. The version we have does not have this function and the fan is in operation all the time. However, the intake fan for the combustion process is extremely quiet. We imagine that the stovetop without the heater lid (85DT) is much quieter. We are basing this on the noise level of the 86D convection oven which we have noted is extremely quiet. And, we believe that the combustion chambers for each of these units is identical. We can also say that the heater fan in question is quieter than the fan on our old OEM propane heater as well as quieter than the fan on our Espar D5 diesel heater. Sorry, we do not have a decibel reading for the fan noise on the Nordic DT just yet. We appreciate your interest and will have more information and reviews of this stovetop and oven coming out in the future.

    Hi guys, useful video since I'm looking to convert our much smaller camper to diesel for the same reasons as you. There are specific cleaners for glass top cookers, we use Ceramabryte here in Canada, cheap, convenient, effective. Question: is it possible to cook main dish on the big burner and rice or potatoes on the smaller burner at the same time? Cheers!

    • @rohdsteading5880
      @rohdsteading5880  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the tip! As far as cook on the hot side and low side of the burner, it would depend on the temperature you have the cooktop set to. For example if you have the hot side set to medium/ medium low for your main dish the cooler side of the cooktop will probably not be hot enough the simmer rice or potatoes. What I have found though is if I start the rice on the hotter side and then move it to the cooler side of the cooktop while I am cooking my main dish, I can then move the rice back towards the hotter side to finish it once my main dish is cooked. Again, this is all very dependent on what temperature you have the cooktop set to. Another thing to keep in mind is that the stove top does not dissipate heat very well so it is easier to turn the heat up than it is to turn the heat down. For this reason I have found it easiest to set the temperature and then if I need to decrease the heat for a dish by moving the pan to the cooler side of the burner. We hope this helps and hopefully we will be coming out with another review soon demonstrating more of details of how this stovetop and oven work.

    • @rohdsteading5880
      @rohdsteading5880  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very good question. Sorry we did not address that. I've glanced at the battery monitor a few times while running the stove and oven but the consumption was so low we were not that concerned. If you give us a few weeks we will run some tests and get back to you.

      There is not a four burner stove at this time that we know of. We have dabbled with buying two of the cooktops without the heater lids and installing them side by side to have more burners available but obviously that will double the cost.

    How hot does the heater get in your motor home is it too much at all?

    • @rohdsteading5880
      @rohdsteading5880  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have yet to experience it being too much for our space. We do have a 29ft fifth wheel. It does great if the outside temperature is anywhere between 45-60 degrees to heat our rig. Any thing below 40 it does not keep up with our size rig. If you have a smaller rig it may keep up better.

    Hi there beautiful people, have you tried the silicon BBQ Matt as a no clean option, they work on BBQ and I could hardly believe what people use them for just walk it on dirty old public BBQ and cook eggs, pork chops etc. nicely presented. Thanks from Down Under.

    • @rohdsteading5880
      @rohdsteading5880  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Yes we did try a BBQ mat but the one that we bought was only rated to 500 degrees F and we found that the stovetop gets hotter than this and it unnerved us. There may be BBQ mats out there that have a higher temperature rating but we have not found one as of yet. We might even just try some simple tin foil too.

  • @phillipjacobson4457

    Try putting down a sheet of aluminum foil to reduce greese spatter.

    • @rohdsteading5880
      @rohdsteading5880  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have tried putting down aluminum foil and have found that even with the lid up the fan still creates some turbulence over the top of the cooking surface and will blow the aluminum foil around. We also tried the grill mats but found that they only have a 500 degree Fahrenheit rating and the cooktop gets hotter than that so we did not feel comfortable with it. If we found one in a higher temperature rating we may try again to reduce the grease splatter as you suggested.
