Warren Haynes is one of the hardest working guitarists there is. When he wasn't playing with the Allman's he was playing with Gov't Mule and if not with them pretty much anyone he could get together. I think on the rare off nights he does weddings and Bar Mitzvahs just to keep a hand in.😎

Absolutely mind blowing. I saw an interview with Derek where he talked about his style and influence coming from Indian ragas (so) but to me it's liquid.... watching you watch him showed your enjoyment and just being blown away... like you wanted to get closer on stage to just gawk at him. Warren Haynes is just a monster player combining so many styles into his playing. I always thought warren and Derek resurrected the allman brothers band for an unbelievable 25 year run.

You must be from Jacksonville as well. I went to middle school AND high school with his little sister, Lindsey. Her and i graduated the same year, 2011, and I asked her if I could meet him during graduation since she said he would be there. My girlfriend at the time lived maybe 3 houses down from Lindsey (the house Derek grew up in with his parents) so she was close with Lindsey pretty much her whole life. After we all walked across the stage my girlfriend grabbed me and said come with me. I saw Lindsey and Derek was turned around so I didn’t know who it was at first. Lindsey grabbed Derek’s arm and said “hey somebody wants to meet you” and he turned around, gave me a smile, shook my hand, and I told him how much I loved his music and this and that. I didn’t realize how tall that man was until I was in front of him. Granted I’m a short guy but he’s easily like 6’3 lol.
I don’t remember much about the day of my graduation, but I’ll ALWAYS remember shaking Derek’s hand and him telling me he was proud of me for graduating. He was so humble and just an amazing person. I have another story about Lindsey’s graduation party but that one stays in the memory bank and NOT for the internet 😂

I caught Gov't Mule a while ago (probably Summer 2017). About an hour or so into the set Warren's playing moved into a realm I don't think existed before from anyone else. Not speed or showmanship, but pure music exploring new territory. I don't have the gifts to describe it adequately, but the phrasing, harmony, and movement were something I have never heard anywhere or anytime. It was not just another style. I'm not sure I have ever been so impressed, even at top Jazz gigs. I hope others get a chance to experience it. (The concert was at the Peoria, Illinois riverfront and the transformation was after dark.)

I had a similar experience back it the 70's. It didn't feel like I was in a different realm. It seemed like my senses expanded and I could feel all emotion and nuances of the music it brought me to tears. After the concert ended it's never happened again. Were their drugs involved yes probably a 6 pack of beer on the way to the concert.

Derek is so good. I met him and Susan at a show and they are lovely people too. Love how he moved up the chromatically near the end of his solo and then goes for another round. So great. Fil you break into a chuckle about how amazing he is. He used to tour with the Allman’s when he was 13 and they’d bring him out for two songs and he’d dual with Warren and Dickie. I think he then went onto tour with Clapton at a young age. He is in the band when Clapton and JJ Cale do that show together. Anyways awesome selection.

My three favorite guitarists alive today....Derek, Warren and Billy.
Derek is SO accurate playing slide, it’s almost like he’s fretting the notes. Such a good player. No bs, no ego....just stands there and takes care of buisness.
And Warren.....wow. Such feeling, that tone, that voice. Love the man.

Hi Fil! Im so glad I found you but enough about that... I'm a big Allman Brothers fan, and I saw them as a teen , with Duane in Pittsburgh, back in the day,and have seen at least 15 of their shows, after his passing... Duane was surely the bands catalyst ,at the onset,& the creative "genius" that he brought to the band, was unrivaled,in not only his playing, but in the arrangements of the old blues tunes, that they built a successful career covering live and in studio...BUT.....,I saw your face as you listened to Mr Derek Trucks take us on that "Sweet ride on the Slide"....he is absolutely INCREDIBLE, & correct me if you disagree
..there is NO one, currently living on the earth, that is able to do what he does...his slide was very ,very close to the bridge pickup..! & I think you'll agree that as blasphemous as it sounds,he's is a better, more expressive slide guitarist than Duane Allman... that's coming from a guy who's followed the band almost my whole lifetime, and I cringed at the thought of even having somebody"replace"Duane,or try...but the video doesn't lie...to me its not even close. Warren is WORLD CLASS in his own right, but I'd be typing all night...I love what youre doing...& it's really cool to sit here and watch this stuff and see you on the screen having exactly the same emotional reaction as I am having... like you said ...if that solo didn't do something to you, then ....well,u either have bad hearing or you have never picked up a guitar before, and just dont get it... Once again you are doing a fantastic job... our interests are very similar... and I do have several requested all include in another comment..

The original Allman Bros are what they are: ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Period. I've been a fan since the late 70s and 80s. Saw them the first time in '94 (I think) at the State Fair in Syracuse. Derek came out and played a few tunes (it was the Dicky & Warren show at that point). He couldn't have been much older that 16 and he killed it!
However, regarding comparisons, technically (and I LOVE DUANE), Derek's playing is in another stratosphere.
And Dicky was a monster too, but compared to Warren? IDK. It's silly even comparing them, but I hear this opinion thrown around quite a bit (e.g., no one will be as good of a slide played than Duane and Dicky was the heart of the band's soloing). I don't agree, although they were damn good!
I'll tell ya, I never had a smidgen of trouble pulling off Duane's licks, but I can't say the same of Derek's -- he's next level. I think folks fall in love w nostalgia, because Derek and Warren have reached new piques over the yrs, time and time again.
Dicky is absolute horrid now and has been for close to a decade -- the booze dragged him down again and I'm hearing that hrs become ill (shitty news). Additionally, Dwane is playin the harp now (probably w a slide too), so unless you run into him in the afterlife we won't hear anymore from him (fuckin peaches!).
The writing was better during the early yrs, but as the band progressed the guitar chops became superior. Of course, this is subjective, but I think the later version is a much tighter and technically sound band. They were raw and bad ass back in the day though. It's hard to compare. I guess it's best to simply appreciate both era's and not worry about who was "better."

@88Gibson LesPaul To be fair when Derek plays something reminiscent of Duane, Derek has had a lot longer to "be" Duane than Duane ever did (due to his dying way too young). Not to take anything away from either of them.

You nailed it again, Fil! Your passion for the skill is so obvious. That's what I like most about your videos. Quality always surfaces to the experienced ear. No matter what the style. Genre becomes kind of obsolete when you simply want to hear top notch musicians. You make that very, very clear. Can't thank you enough for that.
P.S. as a big Allmann Brothers fan myself, I DO appreciate you revisiting them though ;-)

I once directed you to a version of Midnight in Harlem with Ravi Coltrane joining the TTB. Derek shows some wonderful Indian influences on this. As usual thanks Fil, Warren and Derek are simply amazing together.

I saw ABB way back in the 70's at the Orange Bowl in Miami and many years later at the 2007 Wanee Fest in Live Oak, FL. The show in Miami didn't make nearly the impression on me that the Wanee Fest shows did. Not only was Wanee a more intimate setting but ABB closed the festival both nights, played for a total of almost 5 hours and never repeated a song over those two nights. Derek and Warren were magical together and the entire band was in rare form. I was not very familiar with Warren and didn't know Gov't Mule but I became an instant fan of both. Warren's musicianship and ability to go back and forth seamlessly between Gov't Mule and ABB was nothing short of unreal. And having Susan Techedeski there playing with Derek in their band was icing on the cake. Best weekend of music I have ever witnessed!
Thanks for another great choice Fil, well done.

I always said- if you want to make a good song even better, get Gov't Mule to cover it. If you REALLY want to knock it out of the park, have Gregg Allman join them onstage!
Also, Warren's tech, Farmer has to be the only tech I've ever heard of that gets standing ovations from the crowds whenever he appears, lol. People really liked that guy.

I saw Derek Truck when he was a kid play at the The Bank and Blues Club on Main Street in Daytona back in the mid 90's. Also got to see Warren Haynes, Government Mule, Derek Trucks Gregg Allman and a "host of others"... at the 20th Annual Christmas Jam back in 2008 that Warren Haynes puts on every year in Asheville North Carolina as a benefit for Habitat For Humanity. They rocked for two nights from 10pm until the sun came up "none stop" at the Asheville Convention Center. They closed the 1st night together as the Allman Brothers Band and I swear to God they played for like 2 hours "at least" straight without a stop with the other musicians joining in which is why they call it a "Jam". I'm an old fart and I've seen my share of concerts, but this one just might be the best I've ever seen. I still get gooseflesh remembering the Allman Brothers closing the 1st night. Rest in peace Gregg, and thanks for the memories...

I saw Derek Trucks at least 4 or 5 times around 91-93. He was playing a red SG back then too. It looked bigger than him. He used to travel from north Florida to central Florida to play in clubs, once was at a college. All his band mates were adults but, while he was shy, he never seemed out of place musically. He was obviously a special talent destined for good things. Between sets he would sit at a table in back of the club with his mother looking at his baseball cards. I'm glad to see him so successful and respected among musicians today.

When you're used to every crying nuance of Duane's ethereal playing, there is an adjustment necessary for your ears to adjust to Derek's subliminal touch with the fretted slide, you still hear the legendary Duane's influence shining through! Great job, Wings!

No problem! These players are great because they do what they do so well, but they are all different. They can't play like each other, just like themselves, which is the key to everything on those strings! 🤘
