Classic car upholstery will eventually need replacement. Hot Rod Builder, Gary Simpson, explains the need to remove all of the natural fiber materials and soft goods inside the car to rid the classic of that “Old Car Funk” smell. He also reveals how the materials inside the seat breaks down over time, making spring and seat frame repairs, and what to keep and what to throw away when preparing a seat for new upholstery.

Very enjoyable watching someone tear an old seat down and to find out what it's made up of. Oh, and nice beard in the follow up video.

I thought it was funny when he said now we are going to carefully remove the factory seat cover and did it the same way the first time 😂

Thanks for the vid! Working on a 53 Packard and the seats have 4 rows of coil springs. Why are the back two completely encased in burlap? Is that to compress them some?

Often when the springs are covered, it serves to prevent the springs from binding against each other.
As when this happens the seat can appear lumpy and become uncomfortable to sit on.
It can also serve, as you suggest, to compress the springs some and give the seat a firmer feel.

Great Video! I have a 1955 Desoto and I am going to sub out the sew job on the seats. On average, how many hours should it take a professional to complete the front and back bench seats? I am on a budget and need to watch the resto-job real close. Thanks.

      Hi Paul.
Prices range widely on upholstery work, I have seen nice complete
upholstery jobs for $2,500 and seen upholstered interiors top $30,000.
The materials you choose, the complexity of design, and the upholsterer them selves all affect the final bill.
Find an upholsterer in your area that is willing to work within your budget, yet is familiar in doing automotive upholstery.
I have seen bench seat sets upholstered well for under $800. The key is finding the right person to do the job.
You can consider doing it yourself also. Some companies offer
pre-sewn seat covers to get the job done easier, and they simply need to
be stretched over your seat springs.

Well they sure covered up the fungus of the mungus. Looking at the original cover.I guess there was a lot of bottom feeder sitting on that.
