This was a comedic parody of what was perceived as English upper classes in the 20's, 30's & 40's. Harry Enfield's intention was to cast ridicule upon the times & social impressions of days long past lol Your reaction is priceless & likely indicative of many Americans seeing this for the 1st time. This is amazing feminist satire, from 90's UK comedy. :)
I'd make this joke, over and over and over as us men are the butt of it.
This is Enfield and Whitehouse. You should check out Whitehouse's new incarnation. I's stunning.
He has a friend in comedy, for may years who unexpectedly had to undergo extensive heart surgery. Whitehouse has also done through it. He took his friend, Bob Mortimer out fishing (Whitehall's life passion) to try and help him. The resild is a BBC series that is a thing of beauty. Stunning scenery, unparalleled friendship and also a champion of mental health as well as men's health.
I think it's on its 5th series now. If you want to see the antidote to reality TV, this is it.
It's a thing of kindness, lifelong friendship and beauty; by two ld men. :)

Sadly, many people today will see the subject/topic of a comedy sketch and instantly condemn it. The joke here isn't mocking women, it's actually taking aim at how women were treated/perceived by society while mocking those who still think this way. The woman in question was correct (if I remember correctly) when giving her opinion on the economy, hardly a harridan... although there may be some truth behind the beard growth thing.

Not really. That's the perception, and sure, there were ignorant assholes, but all you have to do is watch movies and read books actually written in those eras. Obviously there are things in them that still offend modern sensibilities, and there are some that fit the stereotype, but actually think about some of the popular media with female leads. The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939, and is primarily about a young girl being more observant and confident than those around her, bringing out the best in others and outsmarting the old man pretending to be something he's not. Then you have movies like Adam's Rib in 1949 where you have a husband and wife lawyer pair on opposite sides of a case, or Donna Reed's character in It's a Wonderful life whose quick thinking saves her husband's small savings and loan when there's a run on the banks.
While these characatures of the time period and some of the more ignorant people in them are funny, we need to be mindful that they are actually characaturs and not an accurate representation.

Theres a lot going on in this sketch. Attitudes were like this back in the day, it’s a bit of a satirical history lesson. Public information/improvement films did exist to teach us how to be ‘correct’. But this was also a comment on the British Empire with its top down, ‘we know we’re right’ hierarchy’s, laced with the class and misogynistic attitudes of the day. It’s just bloody funny.

Americans are shocked and upset over most British jokes. It's a joke enjoy it. And the culture of the British is they don't take themselves so seriously,

I do remember seeing that & believe it or not, I remember seeing that show broadcast in the mid 90's. The most funny thing today is that this joke is quite relevant for today (perfect example wNBA). I also see how some female soldiers think that they can take on a man & win when, in actual fact, they really don't. Some women nowadays just want to run their mouths yet funnily enough you've got this joke which shockingly blunt & to the point (& for that you do have to agree that is genius) but if anyone were to even try & say such a thing today they would be cancelled immediately.

This is utterly hilarious. It's a spoof of the public information films of the 1950s, which were kind of similar to this, but Harry Enfield has taken it to the extreme and it's so so funny and well done. This was done in the 90s when people still recognised satire and had a sense of humour.

Yes it is evidently social satire on attitudes pre-1960.

irony & satire is lost on Americans. I’ve lived here for over 22 years and I can count on two fingers the number of ‘reactions’ that really get humor like this…

This is a study on the absolute absurdity of the way old information films were constructed. It's a subtle and beautiful attack on the misogyny of old. The only people who should be offended by this is misogynists and to me that's fair game!!!
