The Seoul metropolitan capital area is actually around 26 million. Its the 3rd largest metropolitan area in the world.

얼마전까지 환경단체에서는 생태계 보존을 이유로 한강보를 철거하고 한강을 다시 예전 80년대 전 하천수준으로 되돌리려고 했습니다. 한강보를 철거하게되면 한강 수위가 낮아지면서 한강 폭은 반정도로 줄어들어요. 그렇게 되면 서울시민들이 사랑하는 지금같은 웅장한 한강의 모습은 더이상 못보겠죠? 시각적 변화뿐만 아니라 오염수의 지속적인 배출과 줄어든 수위로 인하여 악취가 더욱 심해지구요. 환경단체에서는 끊임없이 철거요구를 하고 있는 상황입니다. 크게 공론화되지 않아서 사람들이 잘 모르는데 지속적인 관심이 필요해요.

개인적인 생각에 다음에는 인천을 다뤄보시는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다 인천이 도시의 위상이나 지리에 있어서 상당히 급격한 변화를 겪은 도시라 흥미로운 주제일 듯 해서요ㅎㅎ

굳이 멀리 을축년까지 갈 필요도 없이 한강 직강화 전 저지대들 매년마다 홍수로 배타고 다니는 동네가 있었다고 하면 그들이 알까요? 올바른 시민단체도 물론 존재하겠지만 대부분의 시민단체는 그저 정치 아류집단일 뿐입니다. 안타깝군요..
여기에 더해 한강은 하상계수가 매우 높은 강으로, 한강에 설치된 여러 수중보를 통해 밀물 때 서해에서 바닷물이 역류하는 것을 막고 있습니다. 만일 환경단체 주장대로 모든 것을 자연대로 돌려 놓으면 자연대로 인간을 쓸어갈겁니다. 뭐, 나쁘지 않네요 ㅋㅋ

서울이라는 이름은 원래 '수도'라는 뜻의 순우리말입니다. 다시 이 서울이라는 말의 유래는 신라의 수도인 '서라벌'에서 온 것으로 추정되죠.
조선시대에는 한양, 한성 외에도 경성이라고 불렀는데, 이때 지역명 자체는 한양, 행정명은 한성이었고, 경성은 말 그대로 그냥 수도라는 의미입니다. 일제강점기때 갑자기 경성이 된 건 아니에요.

Which root does the name “Seoul” come from? Native Koreanic? I understand this is one of the non-Sinoxenic place names in Korea which do not own an exact Hanja form but uses “Hanseong” (漢城), the historical name of Seoul, or modern Mandarin Chinese transliterarion “Shou’er” (首尔) as its Hanja.
Seoul ultimately comes from Seorabeol, a native Old Korean word meaning "capital city." It was the original name of the city of Gyeongju, back when it was the capital of Silla (in fact, "Silla" itself probably has the same etymology as Seorabeol). According to Baxter and Sagart, the Chinese characters for Seorabeol (徐羅伐) would have been pronounced /sərˤajpat/ in Old Chinese, so the Old Korean pronunciation was probably something similar.
In any case, the word eventually resurfaced in a Middle Korean document from the 1440s, this time in the newly invented Hangul: 셔ᄫᅳᆯ (pronounced /ɕjʌvɯɭ/, almost like "shovel") also meant "capital city" and is the direct ancestor of the modern word "Seoul." Despite the official name of Hanseong, Seoul was the preferred colloquial term by the end of the Joseon dynasty and became official after decolonization.
Another hypothesis is that Seorabeol meant "metallic field," comparing Seora- to Modern Korean "swe" (metal) and -beol to Modern Korean "beol" (field). This stems from the fact that an alternative name for Seorabeol was Geumseong (金城, "metallic fortress.") If true, Seorabeol would have been the Hanja trans*literation* of the native name while Geumseong would have been the trans*lation*. The hypothesis goes that Seorabeol eventually lost its original meaning and came to simply mean "capital city."

As someone who grew up in Wuhan, it's pretty funny to see Seoul was once called 汉阳, which is the exact same name for one of the 3 towns that merged in to my home city. There are also other periods where Seoul's is the same as cities in China, like 扬州 and 南京, the second one makes sense though since it just means southern capital.

It actually didnt drop, it was kinda maintained for the Greater Metropolitan Area of Seoul, which is larger and has around 25 million people. Some might have moved to other areas of this greater metropolitan area from Seoul Proper.
