    As you guys put it Elvis was just Elvis and there is no comparison.
    So much of today's music draws inspiration from what Elvis created.
    He seemed to have a great sense of humor and obviously was quite the charmer.

    Elvis Aaron Presley (Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16, 1977).
    Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory.
    Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off.
    As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

    Elvis had a meteoric rise in stardom when he was 19 in 1954. He quickly became a world superstar, & then was suddenly drafted into the army & packed off to post-war Germany for two years. He recorded some songs on his return but then was the highest paid actor in Hollywood for the next 9 years, until his contract finished & he made the decision to return to live performances, which had always been his first love. So in 1968, he did a televised Comeback Special, which this song is out of. He was very nervous as it had been 11 years in total since he had performed live on stage, but he very quickly re-established himself as a world superstar, with all concerts sold out within hours, & it was like that right up until his death, though the last two years of his life, as his health continued to rapidly decline, performing became a big struggle for him & sometimes concerts had to be canceled as he was in hospital or too sick to perform.

    I enjoyed your reaction! Elvis originally recorded this song in 1956 if you'd like to give that version a listen. Here's a fun one: at the beginning of the video Elvis announces "Please Release Me" as the next song. The piano player, however, plays the intro to "I Can't Stop Loving You". Elvis goes right into it, but if you watch closely you'll see him throw a glass of water on the piano player. ELVIS PRESLEY - I Can't Stop Loving You (1972) 4K (2:26).

    The most amazing & emotional voice, so here's a bit of info on his health: he inherited the genetic ailment A-1 antitrypsin which causes COPD/emphysema + possible liver damage & at some point in his life he began needing the use of an inhaler to help him breathe. It was on this '68 special sit-down segment for "Heartbreak Hotel" when he touched his throat & said hold it, i'm out of breath, wait a minute, but Elvis being Elvis he just laughed & continued on; he also coughed a few times during that song. He also had painful glaucoma & the mega bright house lights & stage lights at his concerts were hard on his eyes; in the mid-70's he had emergency in-office eye surgery. I don't think anyone w-his illness would be able to do what he did to the very end. Thank you.

    • @jjbud3124
      @jjbud3124 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In one of his concerts that I went to, he had the spotlight turned off, I'm certain it was due to eye pain from glaucoma. During his later year concerts he hardly ever opened his eyes while singing. Also during those last years his shortness of breath became noticeable. I don't know how he managed to some some of the greatest songs of his career while having breathing trouble. I think that segment of Heartbreak Hotel wasn't so much due to actual shortness of breath. That was his first song for that show and he was extremely nervous. I think his throat closed up on him from nerves. He had to be persuaded to even come out because he was a nervous wreck. Once Elvis got started he relaxed and started having fun.

    • @carolhayar3037
      @carolhayar3037 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jjbud3124 I do know that on the '68 special he was so nervous that he told producer-director Steve Binder he wasn't going out & Binder said I don't care if you walk out & just say hello & walk off, but you are going out. If you pay close attention to his little cough on Heartbreak Hotel, it's obvious it was his lungs. The condition was from his Mother's side. Of course he would joke about it & comment the leather suit was hot, which is so Elvis, but it was more than that. In Greensboro, NC 1972 before doing “Funny How Time Slips Away," he asked for the house lights to be turned up & he said a few words to the audience (a great moment!). Those lights are literally blinding. I too to don't know how he managed either -- i guess w-the pills for pain & an inhaler he was able to make it through.

    I am an avid fan for decades but don't consider myself a nut but after a great reaction, and I know it is for fun, but I fully expected at least a 9 for an absolutely classic performance. 😊😊

    What a fun and enjoyable reaction - thanks gents! I love the sit-down portion of the 68 Comeback special. It's completely unrehearsed and raw and still sounds so good. They've reunited two of the three band members who played with Elvis during the 50s, guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer DJ Fontana (Bassist Bill Black had died in 1965). I highly recommend "Ready Teddy" from 1956, live on the Ed Sullivan show.

    Just want to say a hello to both of you, as I enjoy your ELVIS reactions! You might enjoy a video about ELVIS in his early days and the firestorm he lit off here in America. It's a 2-Part documentary "Elvis Presley and The Black Community, That Echo Will Never Die". I love how though we're continents apart, we can share and enjoy the same things in common! You guys have another new Subscriber! THANK YOU!

    Probably the greatest cover artist that ever has been although he did do one original right near the close of his career, one witten specifically for him using the words of MLK's speeches which was truly wonderful.

      Wow what a scatter gun approach, you take no prisoners. One site has Elvis recording over 300 original songs while If I Can Dream recorded in June 1968 is hardly near the close of his career and passing in August 1977.
