I thought it was an absolutely unnecessary sequal and tainted the brilliance of the first one.
Some of the scenes are great (like Jack Jack and the Raccoon) and would have made wonderful shorts, the animation was gorgeous, I want to live in that mid century house they were given to stay in, but the plot overall was bland, predictable and the character development from the first was almost completely undone. As a huge fan of the first, I was really dissapointed that they didn't say no to a sequal.

I could see it being set a few years after Incredibles 2. Violet and Tony have been dating for some time now and despite running off every now and again, he isn't too worried about Violet. I feel like the story will center around Violet and Dash figuring out what they want to do with life and choosing a path that's theirs.

The reason Dash eats so much is because he burns more calories than an average person because of his speed. It’s actually a pretty common trope for speedster characters.

    • @bobbuethe1477
      @bobbuethe1477 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

Yeah, that's a trope that always bugged me. I mean, most super-powers use a lot of energy. Why are speedsters the only ones who need to eat more to replenish it?
That's not counting solar-powered heroes like Superman and Starfire, of course. Although there was a story in Action Comics #454 in which Superman's body stopped absorbing solar energy and he had to eat constantly to keep his power level up.

I think there’s an important distinction too between having complicated feelings and jealousy come up and taking those out on his wife. We see a lot of Bobs reactions but he clearly is trying to be supportive in spite. No one feels all the perfect things and no one should be expected to, but besides a little initial prickliness at feeling like he wasn’t wanted/yesterday’s news, Bob does a decent job holding it together while actually interfacing with Helen, and holding down the fort generally. Baby with powers seems very new to them and he’s still white knuckling it to not distract Helen.

2:27: That's a great visual pun, even though you didn't realize it.
Jack-Jack was watching a show where the bad guys wore masks. The raccoon's eye markings look like a mask, and to a baby, it was "stealing" their trash. He wasn't trying to hurt animals. Jack-Jack was trying to be a hero.
If you sounded out Evelyn's name, you would've guessed she was the mastermind behind the Screenslaver. Evelyn Deaver. Evil Endeavor.

FWIW, "survival of the fittest" isn't something that Darwin ever said, it was a concept applied to modification with descent long after Darwin's time. Also, "fitness" in that concept isn't about who's strongest or best, it's about being adapted or suited to your surroundings. There are tiny rodents who are the "fittest" to live in desert patches, but it's unlikely that any of them will ever be super heroes.

The dinner table conversation shows that Bob is not just a "superhero junkie" like he was kind of shown in the first movie, which he of course is, but he is also a genuine "good guy".. like Superman or Captain America. In fact the parents have a similar argument as we saw in Captain America Civil War between Steve and Tony.
To make a long story short, Bob would probably be "worthy". :P
So, he is not jealous of her her, he is jealous she gets to do it.. just look at her, a grown woman is acting like a teenager, that's how Bob feels inside everytime he saves someone and that's what he is jealous of. he is a superhero junkie.
There is also the issue of Bob having something like "spidey sense", he feels/predicts crime and it was subtley shown even in the first movie, so imagine him sitting there for 15 years literally feeling people being wronged left and right, every single day and being able to do something about it, but you can't cause of some laws.
It must be driving him crazy.

Fun fact in the scene where Helen is talking to Bob on the phone there is a painting behind her that shows red shapes on a white background. Bob being a large rectangle, Violet a narrow paint line, dash a triangle, Jack Jack a little round dot and Helen being a more narrow triangle with that appears to be a twist to it. as well as a god line going behind all of them but Helens is off to the side away from the others. Showing that even if they are all not with each other they are still there for each other which is a reoccurring theme in the movie. As Bob supports Helen and the Kids in a new role and the kids support their dad after seeing the toll its taking on him and the same with Helen supporting her family from afar now.

Well the thing is that it's NOT hard for Bob to let his wife be a "super." What's hard is that he's not doing it WITH her. Bob is an old fashioned kind if man. Which supports the setting of these movies as they appear to be set in the 70's , just with "superhero" based technology. Bob is a man raised to believe that HE had to take care of his family. It's not exactly a negative way of thinking; because he literally shows that he's willing to change and become a more involved father as the movie goes on. It's just that he is also extremely invested in being Mr. Incredible and to be told he's not needed is a genuine blow to his sense of self; and yes even his ego to a degree. To someone with Bob's mindset Helen being a mother and homemaker isn't something degrading or sexist; she's GOOD at it and he loves her even more for that. I feel like he's more hurt about not being involved, than her being chosen.

10:53 - "What are you watching?" - That's the intro to a 1963, anthology sci-fi TV show called The Outer Limits. It lasted two seasons, for a total of 49 1-hour episodes. It was revived in 1995 for the Showtime cable channel, where it ran for six seasons there before moving to the SciFi Channel for the seventh and final season. The full intro is "There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We can reduce the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits." This foreshadows the movie's villain.

I always read it less that Jack Jack was trying to hurt the raccoon, but because of what he was watching, he saw the raccoon looking like the thief and has a distinct sense of justice.

🤔 What these movies have in common with the Harry Potter franchise, is that the stories don't take place in any specific year, decade or era. They all have a few elements that are exclusive to the 21st century, but still maintain a lot of retro-items that were no long being manufactured by the end of the 20th. I suppose that's merely the best way to go with any story that involves supernatural elements.

Ellen says '' No casualties! '' after she saved the train ok BUT what about the peoples in the building after she fight the fake screen slaver? I'm sure they are really hurt or dead! Bob didn't killed anyone when he was in the jungle with the robot or in Syndrome's base; he knocked out a few guards AND saved peoples from the burning building. His wife knows what a hero is supposed to do right? Doesn't look like it in this movie!

The way I think of Bob in this movie is that he IS happy for his wife, he just wishes they could be doing her job together. It has nothing to do with her being the one doing the job. He just doesn’t want to go back to being in a cubicle. If they could work together, he’d be more happy than if he was flying solo.

Yes, I agree. The mixture of Futuristic Stark-esque technology and 1970's-ish style theme fits very well. Or maybe it's even earlier, like perhaps 1950's-ish. I get the kind of CoD: Black Ops - Nuke Town vibes from the imagery. Or also like the kind of technology showcased in Fallout 4, before the Nuke hits. That was what the 50's or 60's?? This movie has the appearance of what people in the 60's thought the 2000's would look like.

I quite enjoyed how they expanded on the sequel. I really wish for an Edna Mode origin film; she’s the best character! I do often wonder if Jack Jack’s unlimited powers would become limited as he gets older and settles in as himself. If you want more superhero films I recommend these underrated classics: SKY HIGH, ZOOM, and UP UP AND AWAY.

Come on, Jack-Jack is a baby and he thinks the raccoon is a theif (technically, they are since they steal food from trash cans). Also raccoons, despite loking cute, they can be quite agressive. Their claws are sharp and have sharp teeth. A normal baby would get seriously injured in best senario and killed at worst.

I hope if they do indeed make a 3rd Incredibles, they should age up the kids to where Dash is in Jr High, Violet in College and Jack Jack in elementary school. The story could be focused on them dealing with their hero and personal lives, Bob and Helen could be the same but getting older to where they are slowing down. Could be cool to see.

15:12 I'm not entirely sure on the reason why math "changed", but my guess- these movies are meant to take place in a slightly more futuristic/art-deco version of the 1960s. At the time there was a lot more emphasis on an educational reform/the way things were taught in America, as the decade put much more of an emphasis on science and space exploration. Bob is likely reacting to the methods put in place that we grew up learning (considering you went to gradeschool in the 90s/2000s, or prior).

Fun fact Jack Jack attacking the raccoon was because the raccoon's face looks like burglar's mask and he was just watching a crime show about burglars while Bob was sleeping. So his baby mind thought the raccoon was a bad guy that he needed to attack, like a hero would.

I love this movie as a sequel to the original! Animation--especially textures and hair--were brought up to the next level without sacrificing the style of the original. I agree the villain plot might have been a bit straightforward, but I think the rewarding work being done in the plot in terms of their family dynamics more than makes up for it.
As a 40+ year old father I obviously am going to see this through the filter of Bob but I absolutely love the complexity of his reactions to what is happening. It is completely accurate and fine to note his jealousy. I think the nuance to his reactions is twofold. Before having a family they both got to express themselves as superheroes, but post family and the crackdown they show in the first movie he takes on the role of breadwinner with a j-o-b. It does not look like he finds anything rewarding in it. I think Helen stepping into homemaker/caregiver could be just as stifling if she also yearns to be back out there, but where the 1st movie doesn't address this the 2nd steps right into the middle of it when Helen gets the nod and Bob stays at home.
For the Bob character both transitioning out of the role of breadwinner as well as seeing his wife getting to step back into superhero work it's very well done seeing his reactions of clearly knowing he needs to be supportive even as his very human selfish urges are jealous. That Helen also struggles with the new role (not in superhero terms, but being out of the house after so long being the center of the house) adds layers.
