He was also said to be a very down-to-earth, kind and funny guy. And I see that the lip-bite at the end got you, too - you're not alone! So adorable! RIP, sweet Bobby.

One of the GREATEST live performances ever by an individual. This was from the 1965 Andy Williams TV show and was a solo performance. The other part of The Righteous Brothers duo (Bill) was there watching Bobby perform this vocal masterpiece. If you want to hear both Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley sing together then I highly recommend you reacting to the 1964 black & white version of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" which was the MOST played song on American radio and TV during the 20th century with a confirmed 8+ million plays.

Bobby Hatfield. I am almost 75 years old & I still crush on him ! I have subscribed to your channel because you appreciate the music from my day &, of course, because you love that lip-bite! Actually, I just watched your reaction to "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling " & you even recognized Bobby in that duo performance, too. Bill Medley was a good singer in his own right for sure. He just wasn't Bobby (Bill still sings. Bobby left this world in 2003.) Well, I'm starting to ramble so I'll wrap it up for now. Thank you for one of the best, if not the BEST reactions to a true masterful performance.

You were given quite a few comments about the history of the Righteous Brothers. Bobby was 25/yrs old when this was recorded live, on the Andy Williams TV Show. The duo was dubbed, "Blue-Eyed Soul" back in the day. This song was recorded in 1965 and will forever withstand the test of time. Why? Because unlike many songs of today, "Class Never Goes Out of Style".

  • @ingfig1

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

Bill Medley is the other "brother". This was a solo by Bobby and considered one of the best live performances ever. Another beautiful example of his voice is a solo called "Ebb Tide", also released in 1965. I don't think there are any old live performances by Bobby of "Ebb Tide", studio only. Check it out - his voice is so haunting and seductive; I know you'll enjoy. Hear them sing together on "You've lost that loving feeling", "Just once in my life" (there's a live version of that, with girls screaming and a little static, but very worth hearing), "Walk on" - so many others - they made a lot of great music!

Wish that these days that they would still play beautiful romantic love songs that are so touching to the heart when the words are deep within. Keep up the good work. And once again, I sure do thank you. I really, really enjoyed it. Adios. PS. The song was written between 1954 and 1955. In 1955 there were 4 versions by 4 separate artist.
When the Righteous Brothers got this it's been theirs, well more Bobby Hatfield's; this version is the standard that all are compared to.
On this live performance his Mother ( possibly dad ) is in the audience.
At the end he bites his lip as he knows he nailed this song.
Both Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley had their songs in movies: Bobby's unchained melody in the 1990 movie Ghost and Bill's Time of my life ( with Jennifer Warnes )in 1987- Dirty Dancing; This movie has a hell of a soundtrack !!!!
    FYI From Wikipedia:
There are hundreds of covers of this song, sung by Elvis, Robson and Jerome many, many others many come close, but none beat Bobby's rendition.
"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955),[1] hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack.[2] It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers.[3] According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.[4]
In 1955, three versions of the song (by Les Baxter, Al Hibbler, and Roy Hamilton) charted in the Billboard top 10 in the United States,[5] and four versions (by Al Hibbler, Les Baxter, Jimmy Young, and Liberace) appeared in the top 20 in the United Kingdom simultaneously, a record for any song.[6][7] The song continued to chart in the 21st century, and it was the only song to reach number one with four different recordings in the UK until it was joined by Band Aid 30's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in 2014.[8][9]
Of the hundreds of recordings made, the Righteous Brothers' version in July 1965, with a solo by Bobby Hatfield, became the jukebox standard after its release. Hatfield changed the melody in the final verse and many subsequent covers of the song are based on his version. The Righteous Brothers recording achieved a second round of great popularity when featured in the film Ghost in 1990. In 2004, it was number 27 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema.
    Other notable versions
Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers of The Goons :recorded a parody of the song, produced by George Martin, on June 29, 1955. It would have been the first single by the Goons, however, EMI refused to release it, fearing a lawsuit from its music publisher.[142][143] It prompted Spike Milligan to move to Decca Records which released other works from the Goons.[143] The Goons later released an album titled Unchained Melodies with Decca, but without the actual song.[144] The single was later released in 1990,[145][146] and the song was then included in the 2007 compilation album titled Unchained Melodies - The Complete Recordings 1955-1978.
Cliff Richard and The Shadows : recorded a version for the 1961 album Listen to Cliff! at the height of the popularity of both acts in the U.K. and British Commonwealth countries. The album peaked at No.2 on the U.K. album charts, where it spent 28 weeks on chart at a time when the U.K. album chart was a Top 20 only.
In 1979, George Benson : recorded a version for the Warner Bros. Records album Livin' Inside Your Love. The single peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary (chart).[150]
In 1981, a live version performed by the band Heart, with lead vocals by Ann Wilson, peaked at number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1986, Leo Sayer : released a version of the song with a contemporary reworking of the "wall of sound" production technique that included an unusual electric guitar solo near the climax. The single charted in the UK at No. 54.
Robson & Jerome version: is notable as the best-selling single of 1995 in the UK. It also launched the singing career of Robson & Jerome, and became the biggest hit in the UK for Simon Cowell, marking his beginning as a significant figure in the music industry.
U2 : covered the song as a B-side to their 1989 single, "All I Want Is You", and included in their compilation album The Best of 1980-1990. They have performed the song live many times, including one captured on their 1993 concert film Zoo TV: Live from Sydney. Bono and The Edge also performed the song together with "One" for the charity 46664 Concert in tribute to Nelson Mandela held in Cape Town in 2003.
Cyndi Lauper: was nominated for a 2005 Grammy award for "Best Instrumental Composition Accompanying a Vocal" for her interpretation of the song, which appears on her 2003 studio album At Last.
In 2006, singer Barry Manilow : covered the song on his album The Greatest Songs of the Fifties and was released as a single.[156] The song reached number 20 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
In 2020, country singers Orville Peck and Paul Cauthen : released a cover of the song under the name "The Unrighteous Brothers" along with a cover of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'".
Country charts: Different versions of the song have made the Hot Country Songs charts.
    Joe Stampley (number 41, 1975)
Elvis Presley (number 6, 1978): On June 21, 1977, Elvis Presley performed the song at a show in Rapid City, South Dakota. The performance, described as "the last great moment of his career", was recorded for his last television special two months before his death in August 1977. A single, based on this recording, was released in March 1978. It reached No. 6 in the country charts of both the US and Canada, and was certified Gold by Music Canada on July 10, 1986 Another live version recorded earlier in April 1977 in Ann Arbor, Michigan was included in his last album Moody Blue.
    Ronnie McDowell (number 26, 1991)
LeAnn Rimes (number 3, 1997): LeAnn Rimes' cover was originally released in November 1996 as a B-side track on a promotional single "Put a Little Holiday in Your Heart" that was only available at Target stores on the purchase of her first album Blue. It was also released as a single to radio and included in the compilation album Unchained Melody: The Early Years. The song reached No. 3 on both the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts in the US, and No. 3 in the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada. It was ranked No. 64 on the 1997 Year End Country Songs chart in the US,and No. 49 in Canada's Year End Country Tracks chart.

If you look on TH-cam there are other clips of when both brothers walk out and it’s decided that Bobbie will sing the solo.

Absolutely wrong. Bobby recorded the studio version and it became an instant hit, he was always going to sing the live version. Watch it again; nowhere in that video is it shown that they decide right there - in fact Bobby flatly states, "I sing that one by myself", or something like that. This myth gets more preposterous every time I hear it!

You stumbled upon what many people think is the greatest live, male vocal performance of all time. If you have not reacted to Pentatonix or Home Free...do yourself a favor... They both will help you grow your channel...and love of musical talent. Enjoy the ride if you dare to take it! LOL :)

Live band and performance. He and Bill Medley (not real brothers) both wanted to record the single, so they tossed a coin and Bobby Hatfield won. It was meant to be because no one could match this perfection. After 60 years it’s still thrills old and young alike. RIP Bobby.

It was featured in the movie, "Ghost". Bobby had severe stage fright which had to have been worse as his parents were there during this Andy Williams show performance. Bobby had a *four octave range* . What you seeing her is complete CONTROL in his singing. He didn't have to *strain* his high notes. No strain or look like he's even trying. Bobby is 25 in this performance live on the
Andy Williams show. Why no clapping or vocalizations during the song? In these shows (check out The Animals on the Ed Sullivan show) they politely ask the audience to *not* do this. Ever really want to hear a performance and you just really wish the audience would just shut up! I think that last sweet smile where he bites his lower lip meant he knew that he damn *KILLED IT* .
Also Bobby is so damn fine! That outfit is just pure swank without being gaudy. Diamond pinkie ring without being outrageously gaudy big.
Their song "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" holds the record as most song plays ever on the radio. If you REALLY want to listen to a true blue eyed soul listen to "I Just Want to Make Love With You".
The ladies listen and get blushed.
