My late grandmother always said, The Polish forces were among the bravest of all. She saw them fighting, from house to house, bajonets fixed, while for example the Canadians set every house ablaze with flamethrowers, if they even suspected it had Germans in it, destroying civilians houses. She always told me, how much respect she had for the Polish forces, she always called them real fighters, and very daring and brave.Both her and her parents houses were 2 times ransacked. First by retreating French troops, and during operation Switchback by the Canadians. Now, i am not saying the French and Canadians sucked, but it had always upset her.

Mark, just as a note, Austrian post-war conduct is very ambivalent (for lack of a better word). Very focused on making history forget about Austria as one of the 2 core Nazi countries. Because of this focus, war criminals have been treated very lightly in Austria. Remember, the Nazis weren't the only ones running escape lines immediately following WWII. Millions of Eastern Europeans were trying to escape the clutches of the Soviet occupation. The policy of the triumphant western allies immediately following WWII was to repatriate all refugees w/o regard to where they would wind up relative to the control of Soviet forces. People who would be arrested, imprisoned, tortured & possibly even murdered for political reasons deported mercilessly. If such people were to escape being handed over to Stalin's minions they had to escape & they usually needed false papers to do so. That is something which should curb the self righteousness of the Western powers, how many people had their lives ruined by the Soviet oppression after WWII, withe active connivance of the Western power? It would be a few years after WWII b/4 the governments of the West would admit that Soviet Russia was not just another ally.

Read up on the Reichskonkordat between the Vatican and Nazi Germany. Basically it boils down to the Vatican to stop speaking out against the Nazis and in return they would leave the Catholic Church alone. They even probably agreed that Stalin was a bigger threat to the Church than anything else so they already had a willingness to work together.

Thanks Mark, beautifully narrated and researched. It’s so frustrating and disappointing that so many Nazi Criminals escaped their true fate after the war. It would have been such a different outcome for the Nazis if social media was available at the time.
Well, they didn't escape their fate. The terrible thing is, is that their fate would end up being getting away with horrible atrocities against their fellow man.

Remember, the Nazis weren't the only ones running escape lines immediately following WWII. Millions of Eastern Europeans were trying to escape the clutches of the Soviet occupation. The policy of the triumphant western allies immediately following WWII was to repatriate all refugees w/o regard to where they would wind up relative to the control of Soviet forces. People who would be arrested, imprisoned, tortured & possibly even murdered for political reasons deported mercilessly. If such people were to escape being handed over to Stalin's minions they had to escape & they usually needed false papers to do so.
That is something which should curb the self righteousness of the Western powers, how many people had their lives ruined by the Soviet oppression after WWII, withe active connivance of the Western power? It would be a few years after WWII b/4 the governments of the West would admit that Soviet Russia was not just another ally.

There weren't any "good guys" but the Soviets (in most cases) were the worst guys.
@Jebus Hypocristos even without WWII, the Soviet Union were killing their own starting with the Kulacks in the 1920's. Stalin killed nearly 20million and the Soviet Union lost 28million in WWII. The prominent role of the Roman Catholic church in this is fascinating, especially since there were also very public calls from Roman Catholic bishops to shut down the T4 execution program and to excommunicate catholics who joined the Nazi party. This demonstrates just how complex history can be.

I also recently found out that in our neighbouring village SS men were hiding/holding out towards the end of the war... the Americans fired at them and consequently three farms burned down. Hearing these things is simply insane.

Read up on the Reichskonkordat between the Vatican and Nazi Germany. Basically it boils down to the Vatican to stop speaking out against the Nazis and in return they would leave the Catholic Church alone. They even probably agreed that Stalin was a bigger threat to the Church than anything else so they already had a willingness to work together.

@Rick O'Shay Look I'm an atheist so I don't really care much for prophesies. What I am saying is that Jesus was an anti-establishment figure who everyone to worship the abrahamic God as they wanted. Then suddenly it became an organized religion and people suddenly made theocratic laws on how to "properly worship" their God. Then it got further corrupted until we have the sickening version that we have today.
