You guys are so lucky to be able to buy and swop out barrels as you please. In my country a barrel change can literally take 1-2yrs for licensing (action and barrel are licensed). It’s easier and faster to buy and license an entire new rifle (barrelled action). Enjoy!
John, possum hollow will make you anything you want for a bore guide, very reasonable and fast shipping. I've had him make a few custom chamber guides for me, they work perfect! Always love the videos! keep up the good work.
I use brake aerosolized brake cleaner first and clean the action threads. It blows off any debris and oil/grease. Then I use it on the barrel and swab it once. Then I use Free All and fill the barrel up (after plugging one end), wait 30 min, and remove with a couple patches. Barrel is done from a cleaning perspective. I run a borescope to check any tooling or burr remnants and overall check the barrel for any defects. I have yet to have one that had any significant issues. If one has any questionable areas, I will run a little JB Bore compound then clean/remove, then JB Bore polish and remove. It will pull out a tiny amount. I clean to bare steel everytime as well, no matter if it's 40 or 200 rounds. How do you get the temp strip to stay on the barrel? Mine keep falling off.
I do believe Possum Hollow makes a barrel only bore guide. I generally start with hot soapy water to remove any oil or other machining detritus before I go any further with cleaning.
Just a thought, but rather than random tape bands, why don't you use a base color for each batch you order. For instance these could all be blue base color and the secondary color for #1-4. That way if you get a great or mediocre batch you can track it easier. You're also never guessing or depending on the log book for your color code.

Thank you. Typically I get rid of a barrel because it just won’t a group together which is usually because of rifling. Throat can be fixed sometimes by setting a barrel back so I don’t worry too much about the throat growing.
I like the idea of the barrel off guide. having them and DT SRS would be a good idea.. Will have to search around to see if anyone I know has a lathe.. Have you ever checked out the TCS jags???? another great idea

Good video John - I was just contemplating having my smith add a numbering system beneath the cal print, though I like how easily identifiable the electric tape makes them. Side note: What length & twist are you running in your 284's? I presume Shehane cartridge with your 180 bergs? Thanks!!
John, do you do a load development work up for each of your barrels? Seems like each barrel would have significant harmonic differences in them. Or does the tuner eliminate this requirement? Thanks very much for sharing.
Yes and yes. It’s complicated. I’ll do work up on one of the new barrels 100% and then typically tune that load with only the tuner to the second barrel.

Is the bolt cone nose more common or considered more consistent than a standard rem 700 bolt nose. Noticed your barrels are set for a cone and if I remember that an add from defiance.
Cone bolts only makes sense on single shot guns and Ive always been told they just lock up better for one reason or another by my gunsmith. BUT you would never want it on a mag fed gun because they won’t feed as reliably.
Mostly sell them off to people for $50 who don't mind a 95% accurate barrel. They're usually still good barrels but not good enough for national level matches anymore.

Just curious... Do you prescribe to the theory that a barrel doesn't "settle down" until after so many rounds are fired through it?? Meaning you're not going to get consistent velocity numbers at first and you'll be lagging behind in velocity until so many rounds are fired through it then you're going to get an increase in velocity and whatever that increase is, is what you can expect from that point forward with that particular load. I'm not 100% sure I'm explaining it correctly but I've heard that theory in some form or another from people in gun shops and on TH-cam videos. I know you guys are so dialed in with your shooting and reloading procedures that yall would probably be the ones who would notice something like that so figured I'd ask...
I used to but now I’ll start in on development after 30-50 rounds. Because I clean down to bare metal each time it seems to really reduce the speed up effect.
@@FClassJohn I've heard about it but I didn't know if that was a real thing or not. I don't do an elaborate barrel break in but I do one... I normally shoot about 50 rounds of factory ammo to get the fire formed brass and I'll clean my barrel down to bare metal 2 or 3 times while shooting that ammo. So basically I'm doing the same thing you are and that's why I'm not seeing a significant difference. Now I'm curious next time I pick up a new barrel I'm going to sight my gun in and shoot everything over a chronograph during my "break in" just to see. Take care brother!!
Good videos, John. However, there is no legal requirement to mark the caliber on a barrel. It’s a nicety & makes a professional looking job, but not required.
Ok my mistake. I know there are some situations (nfa maybe?) they require it on the barrel or the action to be stamped with caliber and I thought that reached to all chamberings?? Either way thanks for the comment.
I should do a video on them. They're adhesive strips for the barrels to monitor barrel heat. I use these amzn.to/3KZXkNB. I know for instance that by the end of a 25rd string my barrel should be about 140 degrees so if I have to take extra rounds or make changes based on what's happening it gives me one more thing to base my decisions on.

So, do you hand load only for the bbl you have on a action at any one time ?
Correct. But I have all the load data for barrels that are off-actions so if I want to use them I can just screw them on and load accurately for them.

4 new barrels, if that was me I'd have a sudden itch to switch calibers for no good reason......
