Eagle & 2 Jackals Hunt the Same Buck

- Being hunted is bad enough, being hunted from both the ground and the air is even worse!
While this poor steenbok ran for its life, he was hunted by two jackals from behind as well as an eagle from above!

33-year-old field guide, Shaun Etsebeth caught this incredible chase on video on a small road just past Tshokwane on the 21st of June 2020.

He caught up with LatestSightings.com and expressed his surprise to have witnessed such a chase, while he was anticipating the result:
“We were on a drive when we spotted a tawny eagle up in a tree. We stopped for a minute when the eagle suddenly dove and started chasing after a steenbok in the grass.”
“It was surprising enough to see the eagle hunt such large prey, and I was lucky to have been able to catch this on video - as the action was very short-lived. It wasn’t long before we noticed movement from another direction, when two black-backed jackals entered the frame out of nowhere!”
“Even though this was a short chase, and neither the jackals nor the eagle managed to catch the steenbok, this was a first-time sighting for me. The steenbok managed to outrun both predators and survived to live another day.”
Aldo Berruti is a bird expert. He runs online bird courses too (www.latestsightings.com/birdi.... We asked him to look at what was going on and this is what he has to say:
"Tawny Eagles are scavengers by nature. But they have been known to hunt mammals up to 4kg, including warthogs and antelopes. If you look it up, a male steenbok is listed as 11kg. My theory is that this was an opportunistic attempt by the eagle and that the jackals were probably on the hunt before."

Wow! That antelope was just magnificent. Being hunted by one predator is already enough, but it managed to outrun even two kinds of predators, on land and from the air.
One thing I like with Kruger sightings, is nothing is 'spiced up, with bgm'...we can hear the chirping of cicadas, and bush birds as great dramas unfold🙏

Wow, two different predators chasing the same prey and they’re both unsuccessful. Respect for that antilope
That antelelope was too big for that eagle...I Suspect the antelope had a baby a hidden around there and did not want to leave the place. Both the Jackals and the eagle seem to suspect the same and are simply harassing the mother hoping that the fawn would react and come out of its hide out.

If the eagle caught the antelope, then the jackals would just take over the kill afterwards.

@@nikolavukovic9958 And even when the camera is still, there's often people screaming, gasping and assuming nature is like a Disney movie in the background. Videos where the camera is steady AND everyone is quiet are rare.

Small antelopes have such a miserable life. EVERYONE is after them, 24/7, trying to chomp off a piece of their @$$. But still, they manage to survive in this cruel, harsh world, so props to them.

Antilope=everyone's food.What a miserable status to have in the jungle.
Yeah but they'll never die of starvation.
I'd rather be an antelope than a lion. Imagine being forced to kill to survive, always putting yourself at risk for injury (sometimes death). At least herbivores can eat everything around them and flee danger. And they certainly are not helpless too, if you're a decently sized herbivore you own everything. That's why adult elephants, rhinos, giraffes and hippos are so successful.

We tend to root for the ones being chased. But the offspring from jackal or eagle can die if they get not enough food, too.

Amazing sighting, and one VERY lucky steenbok! Reminds me of a scene in an episode of the Wild America series where a red fox AND a red-tailed hawk were both chasing after a rabbit, with the hawk eventually being the one to grab the cottontail.

Damn..that buck must be one of the unluckiest animal I saw. It reminds me a video of a warthog stuck between a pack of Wild dogs and a Crocodile. Sucks to be a prey animal.
That was one lucky steenbok. Interesting how the jackals used the Tawny Eagle's diving towards the steenbok to their advantage in trying to make a kill. Have you seen other instances where this has happened?

whenever i see buck /deer/impala out-run their predator its extremely incredible feeling for me. in Nature competition is important. no hunter should get food very easily.
Exactly. If you wanna capture and kill your food, then everything should be about survival of the fittest. There were videos on TH-cam where humans would capture antelopes/deer, put them in their cars and then release them in front of lions/tigers where they’d be able to capture a “hunting” video. That wouldn’t be hunting if the predators aren’t searching or pursuing their kill. That would be serving the predators a living prey on a food table. Predators and prey should have the same chance of survival. As in, the prey must try to survive by running away/hiding and the predators must put in an effort to search and find food to survive. But humans f*ck up everything in nature and claim something just to make themselves feel good about why they do what they do.

Seeing that the eagle is hunting an antelope, you’d think that bird would be a martial eagle & not a tawny eagle. I mean, they’re literally capable of killing warthogs.

deer & pigeon are the two most victim creature of our planet. they both could by hunted by even smallest creatures, but also they both can outsmart apex predator like lion, tiger. thatz why impala & pigeon are two of my favorite thing to watch. pigeon agility & having endurance of flying 500 kilometer at one Go. & impala's ability to change direction & jumping & running abilities are things I can watch till I die
