- AT BIRTH, Khloe Quintana was only able to move her eyes and was thought to be in a vegetative state. She was born with Spastic Cerebral Palsy; a condition which causes stiff muscles and in Khloe’s case means severely restricted movement on her right side. But the now-24-year-old has spent her life demonstrating how she isn’t defined by her condition; defying doctors’ expectations and embracing her passions - including becoming a makeup artist. Khloe, of Thousand Oaks, California, told Barcroft Studios: “I started from the bottom, I started from nothing, and here I am through hard work and perseverance, surrounding myself with the right people, and having a positive attitude. If you put in the hard work and the dedication, nobody can stop you.”

I’m in a wheelchair and I’ve been out with friends and the waiter asks my friend what I would like, as if I wasn’t able to talk or make my own choices. People are often surprised that I can bathe, dress, cook.. all by myself! Its crazy what concepts people have of the disabled.
I'm a disability support worker & I get so deflated when I'm out with clients & service staff only address me. Kindness is key to changing unconscious behaviours so I always shunt the question to the person I'm supporting by looking at them & not answering for them. Only occasionally do I say something directly. If we're getting food I might say "I'm fine, you can serve my friend" or something. I know how I feel when it happens so I can only imagine how you & everyone else who gets ignored feels! Even before I was in this industry, when I was in retail or reception etc I never thought to treat anyone as less than by expecting they can't speak for themselves. When people can't, they should still be addressed directly & that's the hardest one to politely educate people about I've found.
aussiejubes the two times it happened my friend turned to the waiter and said I don’t know what she wants, ask her! I became a nurse after paralysis, walking with a long full length leg brace on my left leg and a cane. Then once I graduated and passed my board exams I had to fight to get a job.

This is what we need to see more of on tv. I’m so sick of seeing the disability community underrepresented in the media. We need to see people with disabilities going out and having fun and that this is normally.

I feel horrible that she doesn’t have a car for disabled ppl so she can get in and out easily
I'm in the same situation, although different medical condition. A USED accessible vehicle, the cheapest I've been able to find is $30,000. I don't know about where she is, but where I live, if you're born with a disability, learning to drive, the lessons are more than triple the price of those of the able-bodied, whereas, if you get your license before becoming disabled and then become disabled, the total is literally $200 cheaper. So even if, by some miracle, I was able to afford an accessible vehicle, I still wouldn't be able to afford the lessons to learn to drive.
As is though, since I can no longer transfer safely to and from a non-modified car from my wheelchair (due to fairly recent onset of severe and unpredictable bouts of spasticity), I've been home bound for a couple of months.
She at least has the luxury of having accessible (and actually fairly reasonable) public transport. That's not an option for me because the nearest bus stop is up a huge hill, which I'm unable to get up by myself and a couple of miles away, too far for me to be able to push myself.
The only thing I've been able to leave the house for since about October, is doctors appointments, and even then, mom and I are both exhausted when we get home and hurt for the next week, myself usually completely unable to leave the bed for any reason for at least the next 2-3 days.
I'm not saying that her situation is good or even reasonably acceptable, but compared to my situation, she's got luxuries that I can only dream of having, and I know I have it better than many other disabled people as well. It's sad, unexcusable, humiliating, and frustrating, but it's unfortunately the reality of being disabled in this day & age. It's definitely better than it was just a few decades ago, but it's definitely far from okay at this point.

Sje ios just one of hundreds of thousands of disabled people, myself included. Want to buy me a car too? I didn't think so. There is nothing remarkable about her. Next time you see a car in handiucapped parking and it doesn't have proper tags, call the Police and wait for them. That will help a handicapped person in a meaningful way and costs nothing but your time.

Why don't you get Access? They have vans for wheelchairs and they take you just about everywhere. Not sure what specific city you live in. It's available in most places in LA County.
