    It's a great tutorial on a rather convoluted method of filing. This was the only video that properly explained how to do this. I'm sure the brains of Blender with sort this out eventually. All in all, it's better than it was before.

    Nice. Thanks you. I have been avoiding this kind of tutorial due to having tried without instruction to just make an asset library. This was clear about needing to have a .blend file in which your library must reside.
    I understand there are some further nuances you can play with to change the image that represents each asset that is visible in your library using the N key and the other side of the Asset Browser window.
    Reinforcing and repeating WHEN you must SAVE and RE-SAVE each time for ti to update the asset status within each library file withing your ASSETS folder was very helpful.

    Really, the asset browser system should be file agnostic. Once you set up the directory, the asset system should handle all the automation necessary. Meaning, if you are working on an asset And/or collection, then mark it as an asset, a dialog should ask you where to save it within the asset browser directory. This should save a single file per asset or asset collection. Then, if you edit an asset and want to push those changes to the asset in the asset browser, regardless of what file you edit it in, you should select a command that updates the original asset. This way you don’t need to manage a single file full of assets in the original file only. You can work on any asset in any file Andy the asset browser should reflect the new state… or keep the old state if you do choose. This would create many smaller files for each asset but that is preferable in all respects. Especially if you are pushing the asset to a game engine. The current setup is so limiting that it makes it only moderately useful instead of life changing like I had dreamed it would be.
    Either way, you did a great job demonstrating this system. Ty.

      Let’s hope this changes in the future. I agree, make life easier by allowing me to add to my library from any file. It’s just a data base of sorts. Writing the code is no more difficult then managing multiple files. Did that for years when i wrote accounting software.

    Thanks for the video. The Asset Browser in 3.1 has been so hard to figure out. Which asset browser won't let you add assets from a scene directly into a user library without jumping through a bunch of hoops? This one! I'm still not convinced I'll stick with it since add-on asset managers like Kit Ops or Asset Manager are really simple to use compared to this. (Despite their flaws and limitations.) I think the Blender devs really dropped the ball with how they designed it. I appreciate what they do but the Asset Browser is, well, terribly painful to use.

    The asset library is great, but one headache is that you need to decide on a system for categories before you start, because to change categories you have to open the files and change category for the assets in the original files. So changing categories after you have a lot of assets is not easy. Good to have a logical system for categories and stick to it.

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are 100% correct. Maybe blender 4 will improve this slightly complex asset system. Lol.

  • @ArtistryMusication
    @ArtistryMusication 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One part of this you didn't mention and I discovered on my own was saving another file in the same directory and adding Mark as Asset will show up in the main asset library your using. And yes this gets confusing and alittle cluttered but opening any file in that directory you can still create new categories. So the nice thing about this is if you have a file with alot of nice textures in it you can do a save as to the directory of your Assets and then mark as asset. The down side would be having 2 copies of the same file if your going to be changing it for a project. (if thats clear)

    The last minute is the most important (even though you mentioned it before.) it’s a bummer Blender doesn’t have a more centralized db system where one doesn’t have to append other projects in order to start making serious collections.

    Well, the Asset Browser is a good start. But there are some things you can't do; 1) Multiple separate objects (aka collections). Some don't want to Join objects together; 2) If you wanted to setup 3-point lighting, you can't add separate lights to asset browsers; 3) What if you want to create a scene with many objects, lights etc. to the asset browser. You Can't!... So, Not very useable yet.

    quick question, if i made my assets, i don't physically have to have em in my blend file right? as long as i marked em as assets first? cause i have a lot of textures marked, but they slow down my pc a lot (even though i have a high end pc), so if i want to add more blender is really struggling. i have all textures pasted on spheres. so maybe i can delete the spheres with textures on em after i marked em?

      Nevermind. Apparently before the final release Collections could be added to the asset library which allowed whole figures and object collections to be used as assets, but they removed the feature for whatever reason.
      This essentially makes the asset library useless for my purposes. I hope they reinstate it.

    Except this is better than it not being there, it just sucks. Assets needs to be separated from blender files and you need to be able to drag and drop to the browser. And we especially need to do it with geometry and shader node groups. The copying from one project to save it in another to use it again, is just past any logic. I think they should focus on this before anything else. Efficient workflow is more important anything else imo.

    Hello @Peter Grande, and thank you for your work!
    Is there a way to save an object in the Asset manager, that consists of several parts (car → body + wheels + exterior mirrors, lamps etc.), as a single asset?
    I had downloaded a model from Blender Kit (at the time of Blender 2.93.5) and now I would like to save the model from the old project in the new asset manager of the Blender 3.0. However, in the asset manager, I can jest upload a lot of individual/split parts (like in the example above with a car). I am grateful for your solution.

He told me the same (cmd+J) it works, but some objects like empty or light doesn't want to be grouped by (cmd+J) → collection would help if I could load it up to asset browser. Also, he told me to try out some another Add-ons (Chocofur oder Imeshh-asset-manager), which could be better managing of assets. It would be nice I think if the native blender Assetbrowser would include a function of a managing of a collection instead of only an objects, materials, worlds and actions.
