  • On this video, we discuss whether or not salt prevents leg cramps while you're running. Does it stop leg cramps or is it the salt that is actually causing you to cramp?

I’m a salty sweater exercising in a hot climate. Years ago I started making my own sport drink with more sodium and potassium than the commercially available stuff. It made all the difference on my half Ironman training when I trained more than 90 minutes.

If you don’t mind, please let us know the formula.

Tried it once and immediately became nauseated. Cost me at least 10 minutes of my marathon time. Never again!

I appreciate that this video is 3 years old. I just heard an Australian scientist on the radio a few days ago. He has just completed a study into cramp. rough conclusions from my memory are: Sodium is the thing that stops most people from cramping. Hydration is usually not a factor. Over hydration can cause cramp by diluting sodium levels. Sports drinks tend not to work because they do not contain enough salt and end up further diluting the body salt levels. EDIT: Just remembered he also said sugar is also good as it helps the body absorb salt.

If someone ever says to you: sugar is good,
      You just run!! Okay 👍

Very interesting. I'm going to try pickle juice.

I cramped up 90% of the time I did duathlons. Two years ago I started carrying on my bike 4 ounces of pickle juice and drink it about five minutes into my ride and have not cramped at all on the bike or run in the last six sprint duathlons/triathlons! It is amazing how quickly it can start to work when cramps start.

Do you still take water and electrolytes and if you don't mind me asking how often do you drink the pickle juice? Thanks in advance:)

Pickle juice works within seconds for me. All I drink is 2-3 ounces and with 20 seconds... gone.

Salt works for after the jog. It does work for me anyway. Anytime I dont take it I get bad ones. If I take enougj salt I never get them

7% dehydration effects brain function. We don't start to feel thirsty until around 11% dehydration.

Over hydration is also bad. Both dehydration and over hydration can be fatal. Every person is a little different and its something definitely worth working out what works best for you.

Table salt is the worst salt to take. You should know by now.

*INVEST IN POWER-NAPS, 30-MIN TO 1-HOUR, IT'LL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP AT NIGHT, TAKING 1-TBSP AVOCADO OIL STRAIGHT WITH 1-CUP OF WARM WATER AND 1\4TSP SEA SALT OR HIMALAYAN SALT!*

Table salt is very dangerous , no one should have it ! But Himalayan salt is good , Celtic salt is the best

      How is it dangerous ?

    • @Jimbo878
      @Jimbo878 หลายเดือนก่อน

relax, it isn't, it's a vital mineral, it's sodium chloride, pink/sea/Celtic just contains other kinds of salts, calcium/magnesium/iodine etc.@@file_and_fly
