The Game Theorists I dunno... Both seem to be post-apocalyptic. The only difference I'm seeing is one setting is the fanbase, the other is the actual game firing more shots than a gatling laser :^)
By this math it would take: 1,696,937,500 fallout caps to buy one suit of diamond armor. Or 5,039,281,552,500,000 real caps to buy one suit of diamond armor.
Joe C because with that quote we can look back at the BS that was fallout 76. Regardless of what you think of the GAME. The devs hardly listened to their fan base in the first couple months of the games initial release
Great video, but there was one thing I was wondering... You calculated about how much Fallout Caps would be worth in 1961, and then in 2015. However, the Fallout universe economy would continue until 2077, when the Great War happened and prices stopped changing. Due to inflation having a massive effect on the world considering all natural resources being used up, I wondered what caps would be worth in 2077. So I took it upon myself to figure it out. In order to figure out the value of caps I first figured out the value of gold in 2077. In order to do this, I had to figure out the % increase of another commodity. In Fallout 4, if you go to a Red Rocket station, the sign will say that ¨Class C Coolant¨ is $113.99 per gallon. Class A is cut off, but I´ll assume Class C is more of an average than Class A. I will also assume that ¨coolant¨ is effectively the same price as conventional gasoline would be and compare it as such. Comparing the gas prices of 1961 (~$0.27 per gallon) to the coolant prices of 2077 gives a percent increase of 42,122% Now, multiplying the price of gold in 1961, being $35.50 per Troy ounce, by this 42,122% means that gold in 2077 would be worth $1,495,331 PER TROY OUNCE. HOLY CRAP. This would mean a 35 pound, 510 Troy ounce brick of gold would be worth $762,618,810. Finally, this means that a single Fallout bottlecap would be worth $71,206 So this would mean that GatorMacheteJr paid $159,501,440.
Caps would be really valuable if this happened in real life depending on how rare natural resources are to find so basically 230 bottle caps would make u rich in a way depending on the resources
Actually, in Fallout: New Vegas you could counterfeit bottle caps. The Crimson Caravan sends you out to a bottling factory to shut the machine down in fear of inflation.
HelloDolly I don't know exactly what you're talking about, but the bottle press is located in the Sunset Sarsaparilla HQ. You can receive a special laser pistol from doing "The Legend of the Star" quest. I personally don't know of a Gauss rifle in that area.
Evan Scott Actually ACTUALLY ACTUALLYACTUALLYACTUALLY That's kind of the entire point. That one bottle cap press was so important to destroy because it's so hard to manufacture new caps. If it was easy or common, destroying that press wouldn't have been a big deal to the crimson caravan.

Squidward Tennisballs I'm on the side of Sole Survivor. War doesn't change. It's always two people/groups disagreeing to the point where they assemble an army and resort to war in hopes of proving a point.
Yeah and in the Sunset Sarsaparilla factory theres a cap making machine which the Alice McLafferty tells you to destroy. That might be the one your talking about.
CM HW Yeah And you can’t even spend the counterfeit caps, so I just have a bunch of those stuck in my inventory. When I try to drop them it says “You cannot remove quest items from your inventory.”
If you talk to Alice she tells you that while people do try to counterfeit caps it’s extremely inefficient to do so, she say because of time and energy to get it so people won’t be able to tell it’s a fake right off the back. Which is why your not able to spend the counterfeit caps you get at the shack, everyone in the waste can tell they’re fake and also helps to explain her concerns over the bottle press, unlike the counterfeit caps the press is an actual threat to business.
I am a vendor at Comic Cons (I do the full Fallout Vault Suit, Pip Boy, huge pistol and a machete) and last weekend I had a customer ask me if he could pay for product with caps, so I said sure. ***** I mainly just use my tablet for youtube and iFunny, and my PC for gaming. I make nearly every single comment (except this one and some others) on my tablet.
The head of the New Vegas Crimson Caravan Company (McLafferty?) mentioned that they destroyed all cap pressers they found, and that the ONE example in New Vegas was just one that they missed. She also explained that counterfeiting bottle caps was time consuming and difficult, making it extremely inefficient and you'd be better off just earning the caps.
I also wanted to point out that in fallout: New Vegas, you can work with the crimson caravan. When you do, however, you are also tasked with stopping a bottle cap press in the sunset sarsparilla factory.
4:57 "A resource like gold or silver" But... that's platinum. Still a valuable resource (maybe more valuable than silver) but it's not silver. I expect better from you, Matpat. >.> edit: added time stamp to what I allude to.
BrickCraft9257 I have I've studied the worlds economy, trade, and the stock market, I know platinum is more valuable but it's not used as money or currency like gold and silver can be used.
So sad. Fallout gets less views then Fnaf. Logic: Bad Games (Well ok not bad but not very good) with big fanbase = MORE VIEWS Great Games with Small Fanbase = Little views :(
Tom the Noscoper in all honesty. its a different kind of game. i havent seen any kind of game similar and have as deep of a story as fnaf ( all at once, im not saying FO doesnt have a deep story, this is just new. ) BUT the thing in MY opinion that ruined this game, were all the kids who couldnt get theories noticed and started roleplaying AS the characters in chat saying they were god.
GT has clearly never spent any time as a commodities trader - this entire video revolves around the premise that gold is equally valued in the fallout universe... just because gold is highly valued, it is almost certainly not as valuable as it is now. Time to get nerdy... 1) Given you rarely see gold in the rest of the world, the demand for gold as a commodity is far lower (indeed, it may not even be a commodity anymore) - thus the price is almost certainly far lower 2) Given there is a finite supply of bottlecaps (no more can be mined, and there is no central bank to increase liquidity), inflation can pretty much be factored out. Gold prices are heavily linked to inflation. 3) Since there is no active civil judicial system, we can pretty much assume that contract law isn't robust, and thus there are no open exchanges for corporate stock or bonds, thus the value of gold as a safe haven from high volatility is moot 4) Again, since no central bank and no meaningful contract law, the lack of banks and thus regular interest rates (and the fact that far fewer people are probably concerned with loans vs. simply surviving), growth is hampered, thus gold won't appreciate like it would in a fully industrialized society So really, only private physical supply and demand would be driving gold prices! And again, we only see gold in a few places with a few people, implying the price is not comparable. Thus, using gold as the litmus test is FUCKING STUPID. A far better method would be to find an inelastic commodity that would still be equally demanded in the future - bullets or cast iron, perhaps?
Higgins2001 But how do you explain that to people in a reasonable amount of time while keeping it interesting and then relate it to a currency that people understand the value of? Comparing it to gold makes for an interesting video that people understand. Not to mention it avoids needing a lengthy explanation of economic theory prior to actually getting to the theory. Plus, every Game Theory video hinges on some assumption that if false would cause the whole thing to be wrong. It isn't about being correct so much as coming up with a correct enough theory that is fun to think about.
***** We must take into account that, just as there are no factories to create bottlecaps, there would be no factories to build rifles. Meaning they too would be in finite supply. Keep further in mind that this is a post-apocalypse, meaning functioning firearms would always be in high demand.
+Nuki Atienza It's not like they plan on going spend crazy with those bottle caps, they know they are essentially worthless, yet they still decided to give Seth a pre order anyways. I really don't see why you think they would take that back if they saw this.
+Nuki Atienza It's not about the money, it's about sending a message. In this case, Seth's dedication and love for the Fallout series, and Bethesda's care for loyal gamers. Y'know what? Those Bethesda guys are pretty cool.
Actually, the split occurred on December 23, 1947, which in our timeline is when the transistor was invented. In Fallout, the transistor was not invented, meaning no color television, etc.
Transistors in fact where invented. in Fallout 4 a terminal entry in the Cabot house, December 5th, 2023 Jack Cabot talks about experimenting with the transistors. and he describes them as new, meaning they were invented later than in the real world. Although I still don't know why some of the technology, like TVs, and pipboys still used vacuum tubes.
ObssesedNuker That is what i was having an issue over, but since we never see a change in the value (unless you have high barter) we can assume that it's one type of bill. I choose 1's as they are by far the most common.
Bnadit Fleet Well there is also the fact we don't know how many bills are in there, since a single item of "pre-war money" is actually a stack of bills.
joseph ferrebee , If I make a movie and say it's violence free. However after watching the movie you see someone get their eyeball stabbed. Joseph, would you then defend the movie, saying "don't say anything, since there are no specifics"?
+Frog-comet gaming (Frogcomet) 1 pre-war money=3 caps 1 pre-war money=? But i know how much it is In the downed skylines plane in the middle north, after picking a master lock it has some drugs ammo and 25 pre war cash. On the smuggling manifest it says that they are smuggling 2500$. 1 pre war money is 100$ so 1 cap is approximately 33.333$
+Imma_Dope_Brownie well they talk about a car in a commercial being at the bargain price of 199,999 dollars. in fallout 4 at general automica or whatever a game of bowling is $5000
I'm no metallurgist but at 5:00 i think that you have gold and platinum pictured, not gold and silver. You can tell by the subtleties in the colour, the shape of the ingot, and the fact that is has "PLAT" stamped into it
bob bob than I may be mistaken. My high school Spanish class did not cover precious metals, thus i am ignorant in that area, less so now due to you, now you have brought up that point
1:25 when he said "8 years" I had to look at the video because for me TH-cam says it was 8 years ago that this video was Uploaded. (Needless to say it freaked me out the timing 😂) Watching this in January 2024 and saw it was actually uploaded in August 2015 so for me it's closer to 8 and a half but that was funny 🤣
Well in this world bottle caps mean nothing, he probably spent like $2 worth of caps. Heart warming story though of a triple a company that cares. AKA The only triple a company that cares.
SuperMrPunch funny considering there are 3,967 comments at the time i am reading this yet you posted this 55 minutes ago compared to when i saw it yet you say that there are 25,362,819 comments about FNAF... please elaborate how this happens. (this is not in regards of disagreeing with your dislike of the fnfa comments it is just pointing out the extreme exaggeration )
Actually, silver is a better electrical conductor. And it is also inert, and can also be stretched out in a similar manner to gold. Gold however, is easier to do so with.
Gold IS still valued in the Fallout universe, and was actually the basis of the NCR currency. In the West Coast, for a while the bottlecap lost its value, as the NCR had vast gold reserves and thus their paper currency was much more valuble than water. However, the gold reserves were destroyed by the Brotherhood of Steel during their war with the NCR, thus reducing the paper money to worthlessness. Bottlecaps came back, but I'm sure the NCR is looking to get their hands on more gold to bring back their currency.
There actually isn't a limited supply of bottle caps. In fallout new vegas you find out that groups like the crimson caravan are always making new bottle caps at their factories.
***** No you can compare the two games by their enjoyment factor and replay-ability. And I can tell you right now fallout 4 will be more enjoyable and replayed many more times then FNAF
+Cripple Foot I'm pretty sure that the point was that 1. Bethesda is an AAA gaming company with tons of money, unlike Scott who makes his games completely through gifs and jpegs and a clicking engine. 2. They are entirely different games. One is a mass exploration game and one doesn't even let you move. They will not get the same audience.

Finally, this means that a single Fallout bottlecap would be worth $71,206
So this would mean that GatorMacheteJr paid $159,501,440.

Mike Koh Like normal bottlescaps, but you can't cap bottles with them! :D
Mike Koh plastic bottlecaps
i wonder if gatormachettyjr ever got his caps back
T0XIC SLAYER517 nope, he really paid 4¢ in caps for the game
+max chavez 4 cents?
EnderCraft yep
TØXIC CØDY no he got the game and not the caps.
I have $100 trillion dollars and it's African money!!!
Waching old videos after matpats retirement...feels weird
actually it has been confirmed the time lines split just after WW2
Alfie Spour yeah, I was thinking that too. Because of the thingy that made small electronics possible was never invented or something.
TheGameCommander yeah the transitor come on The Game Theorists use the wiki!
+TheGameCommander the turning point was the invention of the transistor which occurred in 1947 here and much later in fallout
TheGameCommander Instead of developing the transistor, America worked on nuclear technology, resulting in all tech being old fashioned.
TheGameCommander You mean the integrated circuit?
There are still bottle cap factories manufacturing in FO:NV
There is also a counterfeit shack
+Ganta Igarashi i am glad im not the only one that was thinking of that.
+Pug Life She also gives you a quest to destroy the remaining presser in the factory.
Wheres FO:NV📐📐📐
4:57 Isn't that "silver" Platinum?
Anthony B Lol it says "Plat" right in the middle.
Anthony B Just noticed when you pointed that out.
I was about to point that out lol.
I also wanted to point out that in fallout: New Vegas, you can work with the crimson caravan. When you do, however, you are also tasked with stopping a bottle cap press in the sunset sarsparilla factory.
Anthony B goddammit Ronney. Can't do anything right...
4:57
"A resource like gold or silver"
But... that's platinum. Still a valuable resource (maybe more valuable than silver) but it's not silver. I expect better from you, Matpat. >.>
edit: added time stamp to what I allude to.
no silver and gold have more value according to the world
@Kevin Serrato No....Platinum is the most valuable resource in the world. Study before you say something that everyone knows.
BrickCraft9257 I have I've studied the worlds economy, trade, and the stock market, I know platinum is more valuable but it's not used as money or currency like gold and silver can be used.
I knew I wasn't the only one to notice that, I was quite suprised about that
I knew I wasn't the only one to notice that, I was quite suprised about that

So sad. Fallout gets less views then Fnaf.
Logic:
Bad Games (Well ok not bad but not very good) with big fanbase = MORE VIEWS
Great Games with Small Fanbase = Little views :(
Tom the Noscoper Fallout has a small fanbase? HA!
Or maybe its just only some fallout fans like Game theory
***** I am pretty sure they only do rule 34 and never even play the game.
Implying FNaF is good
Tom the Noscoper in all honesty. its a different kind of game. i havent seen any kind of game similar and have as deep of a story as fnaf ( all at once, im not saying FO doesnt have a deep story, this is just new. ) BUT the thing in MY opinion that ruined this game, were all the kids who couldnt get theories noticed and started roleplaying AS the characters in chat saying they were god.
So did he overpay?
"Well yes, but actually no."
Bear in mind, Bethesda could have simply refused to accept the caps in the first place.
GT has clearly never spent any time as a commodities trader - this entire video revolves around the premise that gold is equally valued in the fallout universe... just because gold is highly valued, it is almost certainly not as valuable as it is now. Time to get nerdy...
1) Given you rarely see gold in the rest of the world, the demand for gold as a commodity is far lower (indeed, it may not even be a commodity anymore) - thus the price is almost certainly far lower
2) Given there is a finite supply of bottlecaps (no more can be mined, and there is no central bank to increase liquidity), inflation can pretty much be factored out. Gold prices are heavily linked to inflation.
3) Since there is no active civil judicial system, we can pretty much assume that contract law isn't robust, and thus there are no open exchanges for corporate stock or bonds, thus the value of gold as a safe haven from high volatility is moot
4) Again, since no central bank and no meaningful contract law, the lack of banks and thus regular interest rates (and the fact that far fewer people are probably concerned with loans vs. simply surviving), growth is hampered, thus gold won't appreciate like it would in a fully industrialized society
So really, only private physical supply and demand would be driving gold prices! And again, we only see gold in a few places with a few people, implying the price is not comparable. Thus, using gold as the litmus test is FUCKING STUPID.
A far better method would be to find an inelastic commodity that would still be equally demanded in the future - bullets or cast iron, perhaps?
THEORISTS UNITE AND LIKE THIS COMMENT SO WE CAN LAUGH AT MATT WHEN HE SEES IT
Oi man
you're new here, aren't you
Higgins2001 But how do you explain that to people in a reasonable amount of time while keeping it interesting and then relate it to a currency that people understand the value of? Comparing it to gold makes for an interesting video that people understand. Not to mention it avoids needing a lengthy explanation of economic theory prior to actually getting to the theory. Plus, every Game Theory video hinges on some assumption that if false would cause the whole thing to be wrong. It isn't about being correct so much as coming up with a correct enough theory that is fun to think about.
Golds worth in the DLC dead money. Sorry buddy.
***** We must take into account that, just as there are no factories to create bottlecaps, there would be no factories to build rifles. Meaning they too would be in finite supply. Keep further in mind that this is a post-apocalypse, meaning functioning firearms would always be in high demand.
Hey matpat you should have made a diet nuka cola joke
Yup.
let's hope that bethseda never sees this, because if they did, seth could lose his preorder.
nice one, matpat
+Nuki Atienza
It's not like they plan on going spend crazy with those bottle caps, they know they are essentially worthless, yet they still decided to give Seth a pre order anyways. I really don't see why you think they would take that back if they saw this.
Seth didn't pay 4c for his game. He surely paid way more than 60 $; you can't get bottle caps without bottles.
+Nuki Atienza It's not about the money, it's about sending a message. In this case, Seth's dedication and love for the Fallout series, and Bethesda's care for loyal gamers.
Y'know what? Those Bethesda guys are pretty cool.
Did you see what they did about " Fortress Fallout ", the game from popular youtuber Captain Sparklez? Not cool.artbargra
+The Guy that wasn't Bethesda, it was Zenimax Media (their parent company)
Fallout 4 added two songs from 1962. This seemingly implies the diverge point from IRL is probably something to do with the Cuban Missile Crisis
Actually, the split occurred on December 23, 1947, which in our timeline is when the transistor was invented. In Fallout, the transistor was not invented, meaning no color television, etc.
I think this is probably the best theory for the fallout divergence th-cam.com/video/5HI6gfC06uU/w-d-xo.html
@@owihn cool
Transistors in fact where invented. in Fallout 4 a terminal entry in the Cabot house, December 5th, 2023 Jack Cabot talks about experimenting with the transistors. and he describes them as new, meaning they were invented later than in the real world. Although I still don't know why some of the technology, like TVs, and pipboys still used vacuum tubes.
th-cam.com/video/5HI6gfC06uU/w-d-xo.html
LongArrow1234 also WW2 ENDED, I don’t know why Mat Pat thinks it didn’t. Like how could China nuke America with Japan owning chunks of land in China!
I'm surprised you never even mentioned pre-war money or the NCR stuff.
Same here as well.
+Billy Lipoff
Technically that is a mistake. He should have converted it to Pre-war money (~7-10 caps). Then we would have a more accurate deal.
+Bnadit Fleet The thing is we don't know WHAT kind of notation pre-war money is in. Is it 1s? 10s? 20s? 100s?
ObssesedNuker That is what i was having an issue over, but since we never see a change in the value (unless you have high barter) we can assume that it's one type of bill. I choose 1's as they are by far the most common.
Bnadit Fleet
Well there is also the fact we don't know how many bills are in there, since a single item of "pre-war money" is actually a stack of bills.
4:55 says gold and silver, shows gold and platinum
Glad someone else noticed that.
+Jaden Pryde you're
I noticed that too.
+Thundrex Me too :D
+Jaden Pryde I know this has nothing to do with you're comment but why do people type like this?
They Type Like This
Why?
An easier way to work it out is using the pre war money, you can sell it for 8 caps meaning 1 USD = 8 Caps
14:06 "Radiation free" Lies, some of the ingredients contain potassium and as such ARE RADIOACTIVE!
+Richard Fry, radioactive isotopes
+Richard Fry He's talking about Gamma Radiation, Genius.
joseph ferrebee He never specifically states the type of radiation.
+Richard Fry Then don't say anything, since there are no specifics.
joseph ferrebee , If I make a movie and say it's violence free. However after watching the movie you see someone get their eyeball stabbed. Joseph, would you then defend the movie, saying "don't say anything, since there are no specifics"?
easy solution:
1 pre-war money = 3 caps lol
+Frog-comet gaming (Frogcomet) Get rekt matpat
Not but the value of prewar money went down by the time bottlecaps are used, so that isn't very accurate
+Frog-comet gaming (Frogcomet) oh ya, i forgot about pre war money XD
+Frog-comet gaming (Frogcomet) 1 pre-war money=3 caps
1 pre-war money=?
But i know how much it is
In the downed skylines plane in the middle north, after picking a master lock it has some drugs ammo and 25 pre war cash.
You can tell by the subtleties in the colour, the shape of the ingot, and the fact that is has "PLAT" stamped into it
Kyle A So does it affect the theory no it does not
luciano jimenez correct! The theory is unaffected
luciano jimenez Why so aggressive? Was obviously meant just to be humorous not a real complaint.
idk but I think plat is short for plata which is Spanish for silver
bob bob than I may be mistaken. My high school Spanish class did not cover precious metals, thus i am ignorant in that area, less so now due to you, now you have brought up that point
1:25 when he said "8 years" I had to look at the video because for me TH-cam says it was 8 years ago that this video was Uploaded. (Needless to say it freaked me out the timing 😂)
Watching this in January 2024 and saw it was actually uploaded in August 2015 so for me it's closer to 8 and a half but that was funny 🤣
Well in this world bottle caps mean nothing, he probably spent like $2 worth of caps. Heart warming story though of a triple a company that cares. AKA The only triple a company that cares.
I know he bought the bottles but its like "Buy 2,000 bottles that you probably do just by buying them normally, get 1 awesome game FREE!"
+OverworldTNTPig Don't forget CD Projekt Red

has the value of caps changed now in 2024?
5:05 Gold has some great unique properties that interest me. It's the most conducive metal that can't rust and can be stretched incredibly thin
Actually, silver is a better electrical conductor. And it is also inert, and can also be stretched out in a similar manner to gold. Gold however, is easier to do so with.
@@curtisevans8413 you're 100% correct silver is a better conducter the only problem is silver still is susceptible to rust
You must be fun at parties
That's a low blow
Jules Grenier Slendy is my name, Lore is my game. What can I say, its what I do
Glad to see another true Fallout fan in the comments.
ScribeSlendy at 20:23 he says gold is still valued in fallout. No ones going to argue with you on that.
There actually isn't a limited supply of bottle caps. In fallout new vegas you find out that groups like the crimson caravan are always making new bottle caps at their factories.
And also the the Great War happened in the year 2070, so the price of gold could have gone up or down
Kaid Pain BUt you destroy them in the end. Or at least, you should... unless you are evil ;)
***** Fuck off.
Miranda Swann Just reported it as spam, that channel is fake.
+Kaid “Sheperd” Pain you n00b the war happened in 2077
why didn't you simply calculate the price of the caps using the pre war money and inflation as base?
War Never Changes because the game didn't come out yet when he made the video
green12apple reese what game? pre war money is present on all fallout games.
They are probably all worth different amounts
The prewar money in the game Would probably Worth the same as caps in the prewar era
Timetaken157 what is "the same"? 1 dollar = 1 cap?
you can find pre-war currency and it says the value per dollar is 3 caps in fallout 4
And the stack of money is $100
In South Australia you can trade bottle caps for money at 10 cents per cap.
I live in south aussie and we do not trade caps... we trade plastic bottles
That’s pretty cool
I trade cans for 10 cents each in Kentucky.
IshTheDemonFish Channel U wot m8 stay?
I traded a cap for a dollar, it was a fallout fanboy. I just sell him the stuff I usually toss away.
Limited supply of caps is not a thing that exists if you do glitches that give you infinite money basically since “it just works”.
8:38 when you said froze, the video froze for me, because my internet --->fell out
thats a horrible pun
Oh dear god kill it kill it with fire

Luca Cortes they're 2 totally different games lol. You can't even compare them
Yeah I just don't like that fnaf is more popular than fallout
***** No you can compare the two games by their enjoyment factor and replay-ability. And I can tell you right now fallout 4 will be more enjoyable and replayed many more times then FNAF
Luca Cortes SO F*CKING TRUE LUCA!
+Cripple Foot I'm pretty sure that the point was that
1. Bethesda is an AAA gaming company with tons of money, unlike Scott who makes his games completely through gifs and jpegs and a clicking engine.
2. They are entirely different games. One is a mass exploration game and one doesn't even let you move. They will not get the same audience.
Dude... There's a bottle cap making machine in the sunset sasparilla factory
i don't think that it's functional
lukes401k it was but you disable it in a Sidequest to stop Fiends from causing inflation
*STONKS*
5:00, that's platinum try again
Anthony Lopez Wow, I wonder if he saw that and used it anyways, or didn't see it and made a huge mistake.
I noticed that too lol. I guess it didn't affect the theory in any way so I'll let it it slide. But I was really disappointed in the FNAF 4 theory :/
Anthony Lopez Maybe it is Silver but in spanish, in Spanish Silver means "Plata", its just an idea :v
Lol MATE Well, just wait for the *actual* theory on the FNAF4 lore. You might get your fill. JS
Anthony Lopez Nope, it's silver. You can find the image on Google. If you really want to know.
I mean in lore, caps work Just fine as currency, given their abundance, and being relatively hard to counterfeit, and being unregulated.
