Hey so I am a leatherworker. For the most part, I agree with not using leather for the clothing. I think something like a jacket would be fine in addition to the suit, but I wouldnt want to rely on it since it's so hot to wear. However, leather really is the best option for boots. You can *so* easily waterproof a pair of leather boots with something as simple as beeswax, or numerous other bespoke products like SnoSeal. Leather boots take decades to wear down, and the rubber sole (or the thread/glue to attach it) is almost always the first thing that breaks down. To protect leather from water you really just need to air it out after you get changed. If its veg tan that might needs 2 days of airing, but it'll be fine over all.
Also for leather clothes you can incorporate vents to allow air flow to help with the swampy problem.

@@celestwarrior Not very comfortable or flexible. You would not want to do farming using leather clothing, and pretty much not machine washable.
Linen is probably the only realistic option since its pretty durable.

Ice age needs durability and warmth. Animal furs or other warm clothing would be your best bet. You’re also looking for waterproofing your gear. If you can waterproof leather boots to some degree, you’re golden

If it's just one zombie, I'd recommend a peashooter bulk package, it's cheap and can be delivered quickly, but it wouldn't hurt to add a couple more expensive plants in case a huge wave shows up later.

I think one point that kind of got lost near the end is the cost per suit. Synthetic fibers are great and all, but they're (generally) expensive compared to materials like cotton, linen, or canvas. Not to mention the fact that post-apocalyptic production for them is probably going to be next to nil, making them harder to replace in the long run. I think cotton/linen undergarments makes more sense from the cost perspective than synthetic fibers, but you do lose out on durability doing so.

4:45 Cotton dries quickly? In learning wilderness activities I was always taught that cotton is great at absorbing water, but it isn't so great at letting it go. This can provide a lasting cooling sensation as it evaporates in hot-dry climates, but would be terrible to hold that moisture in humid or cold conditions (upper North American nights).
yes, Wool was the preferred fiber for colder climates. Cotton was for tropics or summer wear. Linen was the fiber that was used until cotton became cheap. Linen is much more durable, but is courser compared to Cotton.
waxing the canvas invalidates the breathability.... and its super flammable. and if they are going to talk about trademarked fabrics they could have looked into Carhart's superdux. from what i understand its flame retardant (not sure what its made of though)

Teflon is a brand name for PTFE, and has nothing to do with polyurethane. GoreTex uses (or at least used to use) PTFE membranes to make their material breathable and water resistant. Also, GoreTex is just a membrane, not the whole boot material, so you'll still need a boot material, which, for example, could be polyurethane, or leather, or canvas, or anything else
No single material is idea for a durable Boot. PVC is probably a better option than Gorex since its cheaper & pretty durable. Still need a rubber sole for grip in wet\snow condictions & a breathable boot top. The perfect boot is impossible, The closest would be PVC boots, which would be water tight, but also not allow your feet to breath, which can lead to problems.

I would like to add, you wouldn't actually want waterproof shoes if you're going to be wading in water. Waterproof shoes are great! As long as you don't get water inside through the tops, if that happens they take forever to dry. Since the shoes are waterproof on the outside, it also means their waterproof on the inside, meaning if water gets in through the top, it's going to soak up in the cushioning on the inside and get stuck there. Perferably, you're likely to want some durable non-waterproof hiking boots. That way, if you're wading through water, yes, the water will get in your boots, but they'll be able to dry quicker, and you won't have to deal with that nasty trench foot

I think it’s important to mention that the vault suits are not meant to help you survive the wasteland, but rather just to be a cheap easy way to differentiate those in a vault from those who aren’t

Jeans CAN be made to weather a bit more moisture if you wax them. Apparently mine workers back in the day, and later the punk culture, used to rub candles into their jeans and then heat them up so the wax would melt into the fabric - that made them more waterproof and less likely to get dirty

Chemist here. Polyurethane and Teflon are wildly different materials both in terms of structure and properties. I really wish they would use something as simple as Wikipedia for fact checking.

I do a post apocalyptic larp in the desert every year, I use about what you describe here breathable costume outer layer, and a wicking layer with head wrap. You are missing a few things that I have found to be important.
Gloves and gaiters to keep dust and dirt off your skin because dust and dirt out there will give you hives, full face respirator with water line and big tinted lens to protect your face in during dust storms, and most importantly wicking socks.
(My experience with gore-tex is that it still gets too sweaty, and that waxed canvas doesn’t breathe)
The Teflon idea is smart though, because the forever chemicals don’t break down in your body, they won’t break down in a nuclear war! Thanks Amy and Dark Waters for teaching me this!

Style, style never changes. Style gets old, it gets replaced.
I have two problem with this. While it's true MOST of the dangerous radiation would dissipate after a few days, you'd still have to worry about radioactive zones. To this day, parts of the area surrounding Fukushima are still radioactive. You can't even drive with your windows down for fear of suffering radiation. We see this mirrored in the games with areas like the Glowing Sea in Fallout 4, or Fallout 3s Mesquite Mountains crater, where the world is "mostly healed", but there are still parts of the land that are heavily irradiated. And there are radioactive monsters like Radroaches and Glowing Ones. While your outfit would work in Diamond City or Rivet City, it wouldn't help those in smaller settlements where radioactive enemies could attack and cause radiation sickness.
So, if I were a survivor on Abernathy farm or in The Slog, and I had to worry about constant raids from bandits, or random radioactive monsters wondering nearby, what outfit would help me survive?

I'm so happy for Wendigo for getting the Theorists to do a video on their request. I've seen them commenting about it for months.
I'm a little disappointed, Title is clickbait, you didn't even go into possibilities for why the many different Vault Suits from lore could have radiation and energy protection. You could have explored different fibers that could have been woven or layered into the suit, not to mention the electronics that would have been integrated. The vault suits were never about being comfortable or stylish it was about science and experimentation to prepare the elite for taking over the wasteland. This video feels like its more about having a comfortable fallout cosplay than anything.
I’ve arrived at something similar to what is suggested in this video doing post apoc events in the Mohave Desert.
A couple notes from my experience: Waxed Canvas is too thick and won’t breathe well enough, you need either dark goggles and a respirator or a full face respirator with a tinted face plate to keep the elements out of your face.
Gortex may not breathe enough in that environment, and you would want sports fabric gloves to protect your hands from the elements as well as gaiters to prevent dust and dirt from getting in your shoes and under your pants.

Honestly, my first thought of this was silk. Keeps you warm OR cool, and is surprisingly damage resistant. Buuut it DOES get damaged pretty easily by the sun, so... maybe not.

As someone who does painting for a living, the reason why canvas is water resistant is due to the prep we do to the canvas itself, Gesso, rather than the fabric itself. I know a few artists who work with canvas and water color as a pair. However, with a wax coating, you’re definitely on to something!
The question is, when are we expected to have those available on Lumen/TheoryWear? Many would buy it, even if it's mainly for the sheer durability aspect of the outer garments. And there are weaves which allow you to have a softer material on the inside face of the clothes, and a harder material (like the canvas) on the outside face of the clothes. Many sports clothing does that.

Great video, love the jokes and channel interactions (toms camio and the unofficial crossover), would like if the audio for your voice could be smoother since I have sensitive hearing and the backround music was great but also distracting. The old rock has hard cords that stand out and get in the way of your voice. ( It also has a very nice surfer vibe, that doesn't fit the presentation style video at all.) Reminds me of Monster Prom tho so that's a plus in my book! Also this is the wrong video to mention this, but that brown top with the eye designs? Love it!

Wait wait wait… the power armor is literally semi mass produced (heck we see the frame being used by a mine in Fallout 76… and used literally as advertising for Nuka cola and Vim soda in fallout 4… not to mention it is LITERALLY built to be used by the military!! (For context… The military likes things to be easy to be built and maintained/repaired… for example… the Willy’s Jeeps during WWII were EXTREMELY easy to maintain and repair out in the field… (as we see Power armor having an extremely easy to repair and swap out modular design… (the only thing that ain’t modular by the looks of it is the frame… which is standard and likely mass produced)
