  • Do you have a backup heat source? Do you need one? In this video I’ll talk about our emergency heat source and other types.
I’ll tell you why we have chosen wood, but in the end, you’ll have to decide which works best for you.

All good points, I think wood heat is the best, I burn wood only and the heat really warms a house.

Yes, wood is a great option!! We currently use propane gas log fireplace which does great along with small electric box radiant heaters!! But we are looking for a heater like you shown in your video but folks around here keep things for (just in case) lol so we haven’t found one yet but still looking!!!

Locust is the best firewood - hands down. Hickory is very good to.

The most self-reliant thing you can do is a point you touched on: insulation. The more thoroughly you're insulated, the less heat you lose. Losing less means needing less to make it up again. Insulation can be kind of expensive but it's money you only spend once. And then you spend less on your heating - electricity, propane, chainsaw gas, whatever - every season afterward.

Great point and checking for gaps around exterior doors will help as well.

I have a wood stove for home heating. Lots of eastern white pine. I could heat 100% with wood but don't.
I can run my oil fired boiler with a solar generator for about 3 days with no sun or a gas fired gas generator.

Yep, the wood in the pickup bed is poplar. It will burn hot and fast...dont hold coals or a fire real long. Does ok to mix in with some hardwood such as red oak or white oak. Locust is actually the most dense wood in our area. Ive seen a wood stove warp from letting a locust fire get too hot (burning too big). Alot of those real old stoves burnt coal too. Thanks for sharing!

I assume propane/natural gas central heat isn’t a option . Cause central gas heat works off 110volts and your average generator will run while home has heating unit blower included . But the average generator cannot power electric . Wood heat is definitely cheaper . And nice

Only wood stove works without electricity. All others nowadays (propane, kerosene, even pellet stove and wood boilers) need electricity to function.
