  • In this episode we get our turbocharged First Gen Dodge Dakota out in the day light. Equipped with a 5.9 360 cubic inch V8 and a 5 speed manual this old truck had me feeling quite sentimental! Enjoy the first part of many in the process of reviving this tire eating machine!
    Here at Heathen's Garage we try to entertain through misfortune and incompetency. If you enjoy watching a redneck bumble around in a barn this show will be for you!
    Most of the procedures shown are not recommended for your own use, but we do our best to keep it real by doing the thing that we are showing. If we show a shoddy repair on the channel, we want you to be able to see it on the vehicle as it sits on the street--- most likely broke-down and leaking fluids.
    If you enjoyed this video check out the channel and consider subscribing to help us out and so you don't miss an episode!
    Thank you for watching!

    I happened to win a gift card from Heritage Chrysler when I bought the truck. With it I purchased that tachometer that is mounted in that strange location on the passenger side dash shelf along with the redundant vacuum gage. A combination vacuum/pressure gage would be a better choice now I guess.

    i have a 94 dakota xtended cab with the v8 that i stroked to a 390 had to park it a little over a few years ago due to some surgeries but hoping to get it back on the road this winter cuz its a fun lil cruzin round truck

      Is a 390 a stroker 318?

    • @mikemccabe7124
      @mikemccabe7124 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      @heathensgarage yessir it is.. I think if you started with a 360 then you it ends up being a 408 or 409.. I think you can still do a 408/409 with the 318 but your punching out the cylinders 60 thousandths which maxes out ur cylinders so no more rebuilds if u burn the motor up with the 390 kit you just bore it next size up from stock so you got a couple bore jobs after if you ever burn it up but the 390 kit is the perfect daily driver size stroker kit i.m.o. also if you ever want to program it with tunes then you'll want a 96 5.2 computer which you can get from alot of places but you don't really need to replace unless urs goes bad or u decide to add boost via a turbo or supercharger I added the stage 3 module by jet to mine it plugs into it by simply unplugging harness and plug it in and ur harness to back of jet module but u can do a stage 2 I just have too much add ons to mine like next size up injectors and next size up throttle body that's 52mm or 54mm from hi-potek.com which is a performance shop for dodge & jeeps

    I believe the dual plane will keep you in the lower RPM torque…on boost it doesn’t matter if you have a dual plane or single plane the air is forced through when on boost, but I’m sure a single plane will give your more top end under the same conditions

    • @heathensgarage
      @heathensgarage  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That sounds reasonable to me. Now, it begs the question of whether i should put the single plane back on.

  • @douglaslane4480
    @douglaslane4480 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    You should use a single plane manifold, but if you cut the divider on the dual plane down about half inch to equal the pressure it should be fine

    • @heathensgarage
      @heathensgarage  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      So I have a good single plane, but this is a lower rpm engine (5500-5800 rpm), do you think it's worth losing the bottom end torque and putting on the airgap?

  • @jackmagnium6115

    10:53 you are correct. that turbocharger is indeed from a garbage truck. its off of a C12 CAT engine. more than likely off of either three of these brand garbage trucks. peterbuilt, freightliner, and kenworth. idk which brand garbage trucks are in your area (mine here in texas are frieghtliner and peterbuilt)
    also is that a VGT turbocharger cause some CAT C12 engines use a VGT turbocharger. that could be why your not having trouble spooling it because of its VGT system

    • @heathensgarage
      @heathensgarage  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I had to look through some old pictures, but it was indeed a Freightliner. A weird left-hand drive thing. I drove its twin a little bit, and for a garbage truck, it was quite a hot rod.
      This one is not VGT, but I believe it's called "twin scroll," which (from what I read) is designed to spool quickly.

    Boosted applications dual plane is bad it will cause lean cylinder. Single plane eliminates that cause!!! FYI I’ve experienced this first hand!!!

    • @heathensgarage
      @heathensgarage  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Drawing from your experience, do you remember if it was an end cylinder or middle cylinder or if it was related to the low/high side of manifold?

      @@heathensgarage cracked piston number 7 cylinder. Was on a 360 as well. I also done it on sbc and it was cylinder 4 on it. Well I ran an experiment with another sbc. I tested the egt’s on each cylinder and what do you know I had some cylinders a lot hotter then others. Swapped to a single plane pretty well even temps.

      @heathensgarage  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @jacobgompert1152 that is good info thank you!!

  • @KeepGrindingGarage
    @KeepGrindingGarage 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    You definitely need a single plane. The dual plane is more street friendly and gives you more lower end torque but it splits the airflow from the Turbo. Whereas a single plane gives more horsepower and more flow volume straight to the valves, not all twisting and turns like the dual plane.

    • @heathensgarage
      @heathensgarage  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Do you think those trends are compounded by adding boost? It doesn’t have a lot of camshaft, like it's pretty done making power at 5500 rpm. Would it still be worth a single plane? I do have one on the shelf.

    • @KeepGrindingGarage
      @KeepGrindingGarage 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @heathensgarage Well if you plan on making more power I would say change the cam and intake but if you're not then just run it like it is. However that is a very small cam to be at the top of the power band at 5500 rpm
