- This video shows you how to copy files (ie Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents) to an external hard drive or usb pen drive in Windows, using the send to menu option.

I know this is an old video but I just found you. I don't know if you still read comments but you have no idea how thankful I am for it. I have been trying for a couple of weeks to upload files on my Notebook. I am not very computer literate so I don't understand a lot of what they are telling you to do. Unfortunately you will need to remove the duplicates manually, when copying files to the external drive, if it sees files already in there windows should warn you and should select Copy and Replace, rather than Copy, but keep both files.

This is very helpful in my situation. Do you know how hard it is to find a video that actually teaches you how to solve your problem? Very hard apparently. My laptop has been getting all fucked up and I needed to know how to move some of my documents and pictures onto a memory stick so I could put them in another computer so they won't get lost or deleted. I would die if they got deleted or I wouldn't be able to find or use them. You are a life saver. Thank you so much :)

I would NOT move programs to a portable hard drive as your PC will not know where to find them, also some programs are designed specifically to run from a drive that is always connected such as the C drive.

Thanks for sharing this, does this work the same way with music...
As far as software goes, for example, Microsoft Office or music production software such as FL Studio or Ableton, is it possible to install them to an external hard drive so I would be able to work from either my home desktop or my laptop on the go? It would be a lot easier and more fluid to be able to only have to deal with one copy of everything rather than two, but I'm not sure how the software licenses work and what they might prevent as far as using them on external hard drives goes.

At a guess the songs may be in a format or set at a bitrate your Bluray player and receiver cannot play.

The principal should be exactly the same if you have the Dropbox app installed on the computer. Just go to the Dropbox folder and copy the files to your hard drive using the same method.

how do you copy favorites to external hard drive in win vista?
Hi, I'm looking to move photos on various Cloud accounts (mainly Onedrive, some on Google) to an external hard drive so that I can have all my photos from over the years in one place and sort through them. Is there any easy way of doing this?

Hi Chris .. Brilliant video. Very clear instructions. I am trying to backup all my embroidery files from my laptop onto a flash drive. They are mostly stored in downloads. There are probably about 500 designs. Instead of copying individually can I copy the entire download folder across to the flash drive ..??

Yes you can copy the whole folder across as long as you have the space on your flash drive, you can go into downloads and the hold down the CTRL key then tap A then let go of the CTRL key to select all the files in your download folder.

Chris, any ideas on this? I've been trying to send files from a Windows Vista Home Edition PC to an external hard drive. When I plug in the external hard drive, it shows up in Hard Disc drives on the D drive. It does not show up in devices with removable storage. When I right click on a file to send it to the external hard drive, this option does not show in the drop down menu. So I can't send it there.
+LordBluesman Right Click the file or folder you want to send to the external hard disk drive, move your mouse to send to then click on the item in the list that has (D:) in its name. That should do it.
It may not be the E Drive on your computer, the E drive was only used as an example in the demonstration. Open My Computer, then plug in your USB Drive and see what drive letter appears. If no drive letter appears try plugging into a different usb socket, if it still does not appear then the USB drive or your computer may have a fault and you will need to seek further assistance from a computer repair person.

Tarquin45 You should only delete the photos from the computer if you have another copy elsewhere, because if the stick gets lost or fails then you will loose your photos.
very good Chris. But i have a question I reformatted my hard drive to FAT32 so that my bluray player and reciver could read the info. It sees the album and sthe song n song titles but wont play it can you tell me why?

Hi,
I have rare business program on older XP laptop and i want transfer it and use it on newer laptop with windows 7 OS installed. I lost installation setup CD of that business program, so how can i transfer and use that program from older to new laptop? Can i use external hard drive?
Unfortunately, most programs need to be reinstalled from the Setup CD as it will probably want to put entries in the registry and install system files.
question: I have my external drive plugged in and I know it's the E drive but it's failing to show up as a selection when I go to Send To. Any suggestions?
Does it show up in Explorer, or Computer or This PC?

In some programs you can choose the location you can save your files, the way you do this differs from program to program, a good place to start is to look in the programs options. However please be sure you have a backup copy of your files elsewhere, as external hard drives can go wrong just as much as internal hard drives.
