Hi, I can't believe I've never seen this channel before, and what makes it even worst, I am over 1 year late. OMG! How embarrassing. This video was extremely imformative. Thank you kindly. Im actucally backing up my Computer right now as im typing. Your explanation is straightforward and clear. Today you've gained an extra follower. Have a great day.
Best explanation on youtube. Explains every step and option, especially when you START backup and computer shows no dial. Explains One Drive option and what to do. He does not blitz thru the process like others do thus eliminating confusion. Subscribed with bell checked.
FANTASTIC! Thank you - I'm glad you liked the pacing, we deliberately wanted to go through at a reasonable speed so you can follow along AND cover that issue where the disk doesn't show up the first time. Thanks for the great feedback!
To echo @hornet224, I liked the fact that you were very deliberate about explaining yourself and didn't try to belittle those of us who are less competent with the computer and its workings. I had no luck in finding help with my external drive and transferring data to & from it. Thank you so much.
Thanks Phillip - glad it was helpful. If there's anything else you'd like to see us cover, let us know. We're always looking to make more videos. So it's good to hear any suggestions for things which people are having challenges with.
Thank you so much, I checked several videos and I almost gave up and decided to return the WD 14T external hard drive. I am so happy I found your channel. I haven't done the backup yet, because the cable didn't come with the package to connect it to the computer, and the slot to plug in the hard drive is different from what I Knew so far. I may have to take the hard drive to a computer store to buy the cable, but I don't think I will have a problem doing it. I wish you showed us when you back up your files. You have the gift or the talent to teach.

By the way i forgot to add ,a brilliant tutorial you gave a lot different to other tutorials on TH-cam were its a race to get it all crammed into one session, Your tutorial is calm , peaceful, and easy to follow and understand thanks Cloud Nexus ,I'm now subscribed and bell icon ticked to all your tutorials.
Thank you so much, there was a huge storm yesterday and I was walking around campus and my laptop got water damaged and there was lines and stuff across the screen and all it said was that it was rebooting but it never got passed that screen. Today it randomly started working and I didn’t take any chances backed everything up in case it stops working again.
Excellent tutorial of backing up my files. I chose to back up the entire pc to my 8TB HDD. I did this because I just got a new computer and would like to transfer all my files from my 15year old computer to my new one. I reviewed your video on how to restore files on the same computer, excellent video as well. But how would I restore them to a brand new computer. Would you have a tutorial for that? You are so good at this. I am 76 years young. And I love the time you invest in demonstrating each action. I hope there is a video available. Or maybe a simple response would do it. Much thanks.
Hands down the best explanation on here. I do have a question though... Every step I was able to follow, except for the manual backup. When I click 'Back up now', I get the loading circle and 'backing up your data', but that lasts only for five seconds before it stops. It says that the backup has been done, but the data file is empty. There is more than enough free space, so that shouldn't be an issue... Is the backup not working because I already have some files saved on the drive?
A few questions: 1) Having the back up run once every hour presumably means keeping the external hard drive attached to the computer. This would allow a virus or malware that's compromised the computer to also compromise the back up, no? Can the back up be done with more manual input? Ie, plug in the eternal hdd, run the back up, unplug the hdd. Rinse and repeat when desired. 2) I am confused with how the backups are saved and how that works with how long they're kept. Is it 1 back up file that gets updated only enough to match the changes that are made to the files on the system? Is it a new back up file each run but only contains the changes from the last backup file? Or am I thinking of it wrong and it isn't one packaged backup file but all the individual files copied over piecemeal? And how does that work with... 3) The "keep for" time given to the backup(s). If I back up old photos which aren't modified for a year I still don't want them forgotten about or deleted from a backup.
Great video. Easy to follow instructions. Is the "Backup Now" option going to back up Win10 Operating system and everything else? I may have to replace existing HDD with new one. Thanks.
Thanks for the clear explanation. I updated my PC'files but don't get updated in the external drive; even if I do it manually pushing the backup button, they don't get updated; I wonder what's wrong..
Sorry this is a daft question but has there been any changes to these files? Windows Backup will only backup any files if there have been changes since the last time the back up ran. What happens if you go to do a restore are you able to restore files? Do you get any errors when you manually backup? Let us know 😊
Thanks so much for your 'well presented details' on 'How to Complete Backups'😊 I'm preparing to 'swap/upgrade computers' and want to be able to 'Restore Files' onto 'New Computer', etc...
I have a mass storage HDD (8TB) and have some data on there. If I click backup will it remove all that data from there or will it leave the files/games and save the backup along side the other files?
Good video. What about adding the additional directories to the backup? It looks like you have to add a directory one at a time and this can be a lot (since I have many directories on the C drive). Is there a quick way to backup EVERYTHING (except maybe the Windows directories)?
Brilliant video. Thank you. I have rwo questions about the backup save time. What if i have files saved older than a year. Are they deleted after a year? also What does "until space is needed" mean. Are the older files replaced with new versions of that or am I going to lose my old files?
Great video, clear and concise! My laptop has both an SSD drive (C) and a regular drive (D). With the method you described, does the process back up both of these drives or do you need to do another process? Also, if I were delete all the individual files within Pictures to make room on my D drive, would the back up version also delete those files from the backup as it updates? Thanks
Thank you! One point not clear to me here is whether this is also a SYNC - so if I have deleted on my laptop and never want to see it again, will it also disapprear from the back-up drive when I run this procedure. Thx again.
Just found this video. Excellent. One question. You state that you won't see a dialog for the progress. How will we know it's finished with that first initial backup. And shouldn't we see the contents on the drive changing as files are backed up to it initially? I was able to see that happening on my laptop when I merely copied the files to external SSD drive. Thanks for feedback. Also, can we close out these windows and trust it will continue to do its thing or do we need to keep it open in the background as well. I haven't read any other comments or answers so sorry if they are there already.
Great video, well explained. What happens if your laptop and the external hard drive are stolen? My initial thought was that my one drive would be the offsite backup but if the thief then deletes the files off the stolen laptop would it wipe the files from one drive?
Depending on how they wiped the computer then yes there is a risk they could delete the files from OneDrive as well. BUT, OneDrive has a 30 day recycle bin which the thief wouldn't have access to as it's online. You would be able to login to the OneDrive online and restore any deleted files from the recycle bin.
Thanks for the tutorial. It was easy and clear…just one question and that is after the auto backup annual delete does the application automatically backup or do I have to diary in another manual backup process?
Shouldn't I see my back-ups on my ext. hard drive? I don't see them. What would they look like, how would they be labeled? Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
Straight forward & easy to understand, thank you! First video I seen was uploaded from 2015 but the actual content of the video looked like it was from the mid 2000s 😅 Got me a Seagate 2TB One Touch drive 😁
Awesome stuff and glad this was a helpful video. I think we saw the same video from 2015 and wanted to make a slightly better one 🤣 2TB - NICE!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent but not long enough pause on screen shots. Red ring round icons / headings to be clicked on would also be helpful.. I had to keep pausing, backtracking and pausing at each stage to scribble each instruction - later typed and saved. Despit this, the best of several I looked at.
Thanks for the clear and concise video! I'm wondering if I have more than 1 user on my PC will it back up all users? And if so will it show up simply in the one group of folders for backup purposes?
QUESTION I don't leave my external hard drive plugged all the time because I take my laptop with me. When I plug my external hard drive in will it then automatically update only the new files or changed files? I don't want to have to manually do it all the time and I don't want to devote a ton of time to it. TIA
That's a very clear tutorial, one question just to be sure: If backup files are deleted after 1 year, what happens with files on the computer that have not been opened or edited for more that 1 year period? I assume the latest copy on the computer remains abcked up? The back up will keep the latest copy irrespective of how long since it was opened or edited? I ask because I have many files that I need to keep but will not be modifying or may not open in any 1 year period. Thanks
Yes absolutely correct. The backup will retain the latest version of any file so if it hasn't been opened/altered for a year or more, it will simply keep a copy of the original file. If for any reason, the BACKUP version of that file is deleted, it would simply take another copy of the file from the computer when the scheduled backup runs again.
I bought a back up drive years ago called Rebit that stayed connected to your PC and imaged your PC, no fussing around pure and simple then there was clickfree another simple external hard drive that too was amazing, now Rebit does not offer these drives anymore but a subscription service and clickfree went out of business. I am bad as I don't backup my PC and frankly I just gave up as I dont see these old classic 1 touch backups any more as I assume they were losing money. Now seeing these new backup drives my question will it image your exact pc if craps hit the fan? With a new hard drive or PC will these Seagate/WD backup hard drives be your same PC? desktop icons etc. Thank you.
Hiya - ah yes, I know of Rebit. I don't think I ever used it but I get the idea. The function here of the Windows Backup really isn't the same, it's all about backing up the files and not really providing a one-touch backup of the entire machine. In Windows 10, it is very simple and will just run in the background backing up your files but it won't let you restore the entire machine if it breaks. There IS an option inside Windows 10 to do a full machine backup which it calls "Windows 7 style backup" but it's not ideal. A lot of comments we get on here point to Aomei BackUpper which give you options to do - the entire machine OR a single drive OR a selection of files. Many good comments coming through on how easy it is to use so that might be worth a look? We are considering it for a review on here too!
@@CloudNexus Thanks for the reply my computer guy told me about Aomei and that's exactly what I was looking for. The computer guy said to purchase a WD 1TB elements HD or Passport and the best thing about it it's free
Thanks very much. Great video and I even managed to work out that I am still on Windows 10, not 11, like I thought :( I simply followed your steps and explained and back up worked 100% Again, thanks for such an easy to follow video.
Question, what if I’m moving all my files to a new laptop with this method? I will want to delete everything off the old laptop, including OneDrive from my File Explorer, or will that go away if I sign out from it?
Thats cool - you can use this as a backup method to migrate files between computers. Once you've run the backup, the easiest way to remove your documents (let's say you're selling the laptop) would be to use the "Reset this PC" option in Windows 10. Start that process and choose "Remove Everything" which will delete all files, apps and settings. If you just log out of OneDrive, it doesn't remove the OneDrive folder or the contents from your User Profile. All those items will still be on the laptop hard disk.
Is this process possible to migrate a SSD from an old laptop to a SSD M.2 drive and install the M.2 drive on a different laptop? Your explanation in the video of the external drive backup is wonderful.
Thanks for the video. I am not good with computers and i was trying to follow all the instructions, but when I got to the 2:30 mark in the video, I had a problem. My back up drive, did not have two parts, it only had one section and there was nothing called new simple volume. So I got stuck at this point. Any advice would be really appreciated.
I hope you are answering questions. My computer has a very small hard drive that is now in the red zone. I like the idea of a hard drive and backing up all my files. Thank you for clearly explaining that. Now once I have my files backed up can I just add new files to the folders in the external drive instead of having them in both places since I don't have much storage left on my computer hard drive? Or can I delete a copy of big folders I have and just keep them in the external drive, to free up space in my computer hard drive? Hope those questions make sense.
I think I'm starting to understand. If I want a bootable copy of my hard-drive then I need a cloner software program. If I just want to store a copy of my hard-drive then I can use - right click and copy my C: drive over to my external drive.
a question. I came here for something and I didnt find it.I need a kind of backup, what can renew from external drive my whole laptop to a new(eventually, from other producer) one as it was,in the term of an hour or so,possibly fully automatic(or without much of my attention, searching manually files etc.).This all in case my laptop goes off for some reason-hardware failure, hack, anything. Is there something like that available?
Hiyaaa!! Ideally yes, but don't worry if you need to unplug it to move around. As long as you plug it back in again, it will carry on from where it left off and start backing your updated files! 😊
Great video and one of few that answer the questions in comments.. thanks for that... I have a few myself if you could, as i have always had problems getting my head around backups. 1. Before backing up my laptop to portable drive i just bought, is there an easy quick way to delete all duplicate files.. every time i have added programs to try this.. It's a one by one lengthy process which i still arnt sure of so i don't try. 2. re ONEDRIVE.(another nightmare for me), is there a way i can backup all my onedrive folders/files onto a section of the portable harddrive by itself.. like make a folder on the portable hardrive just for onedrive? 3. I want to backup my full 1TB laptop to the portable drive, but because its so full and slowing the laptop down, i only want to put back on certain folders/files plus the onedrive.. i don't want to clutter up.. What i ideally want to do is start with my laptop being formatted and empty again.. and from the backup just pull across the folders i like..... Is that as easy as it sounds.. can i just go into my new backup drive and drag or copy somehow just the things i need. 4. What about things like my favourites on my browsers.. how do i go about not losing those... and is there anything else that isn't folders/files that i need to think about ( i know i have to back my emails up etc). Sorry about all the questions appreciate if you could give me some advice.. cheers
I have an important question; when you chose "Keep my backups up for 1 year" does this mean that 1 year later the bakup will disappear like Cinderella did at the strike of Midnight? Also if I choose the once a day backup option and turn-off my pc, WILL my pc (Windows 10 Pro) automatically resume the backup process when I restart my pc 1 day or a week later ? Please let us know. Thanks again.
this is a good tutorial you explain it pretty simple.but i did it a little different i format my external ssd drive through windows explorer i didn't use disk management.when i open disk management it show the external ssd drive with the blue line call drive F no unallocated so i click back up.but like you said it does not show a progress bar i wish it did so it could give me and idea when it would be finish.just the external light is blinking so i think is backing up my files.do you think it is?
what is the difference between "Back up using File History" and "Back up and Restore (widows 7) ? Which one is better for Personal Computer (PC). Any advice will be highly appreciated!
Hey there, Sorry for the late reply. - File History: This is the go-to choice for casual users who want simple and automatic protection. It automatically backs up your Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads folders, so you don't have to worry about remembering to do it manually. Plus, it keeps multiple versions of your files, so you can easily restore them to any point in time. Backup and Restore (Windows 7): If you need more comprehensive protection, Backup and Restore is your guy. It can back up your entire system, including system files and applications. This means you can restore your computer to its exact state if something goes wrong. However, it's not as user-friendly as File History and requires manual initiation of backups. Recommendation: For most folks, File History is the perfect balance of ease of use and protection. It's great for backing up your everyday files and giving you peace of mind. But if you need system-level backups or granular control over your backups, Backup and Restore is the way to go. Hope this helps! 🚀
I’m using as external Samsung SSD T7 on windows 10. When I try to extend volume it’s grayed out and won’t let me. My drive says NTFS and external SSD is in FAT file format. Could this be the reason? How do I resolve it? How can I change the file format on the SSD to NTFS if that’s the solution?
Hiya - So yes, it's because it's a FAT file system on the SSD which is probably causing you the issue. Easiest way to convert it to NTFS is from the command line; 1. Hit Windows and type CMD to bring up a command prompt Assuming that your SSD drive is drive E: you would type the following _(but change the drive letter to whatever your SSD drive is)_ convert e: /FS:NTFS That should sort it. After that you should be able to extend the volume to the full size of the drive.
@@MeneTekelUpharsin Do you mean the files on the computer or the files on the backup SSD will be deleted after formatting? And is there a better solution? I wish I had known about the differences in file formats but none of the youtube reviews I watched on backup drives ever mentioned this. Everyone was just raving about Samsung SSDs and I assumed these drives are compatible with Window devices.
When I click on Add Drive in the Backup window, I select my available drive, but then nothing changes on the Backup window. There is no "Automatically back up my files" toggle option that appears.
Excellent explanation. Thank you. What difference would it make if, like me, you never save work to C: drive but always save to an external drive as a matter of course, and it is that external drive you want to back up to another external drive? I can't see an option to save from a specific drive.
1 st Question is that the same procedure for windows 11, 2 nd Question i have a 1TB of storage in my windows laptop is it better for me to buy a 2TB or more external hardrive space please.
Hey James, Unfortunately not. The Backup experience is a bit different in Windows 11 (and it's not as good) - We've made a video on this here *th-cam.com/video/T3nGHvujWMA/w-d-xo.html**.* You should be fine to buy a 1TB drive for your machine. Because of the way the backup works, it only takes incremental backups of any changes. It doesn't make a full backup everytime it runs. You should be all set with a 1TB drive.
Hi, I cannot find "Unallocated" memory in my disk. I guessed that why when right clicked, there is no " New Simple Volume" option. Pls help to advise. I using Win10 with SSD External drive Thx
Hi, if I only save my back-ups for one year, what happens to therm at that point, if something happens to my disc on my computer and it crashes or something? I'm not understanding something here. Sorry. Thanks.
I followed your instructions, but I could not back up my data. I received the message "Your data is not yet backed up." I us Windows 10. Do your have any solution? Thank you very much for your advice.
My D drive is my main work storage drive, only important files are stored there. Would I be able to configure windows to ignore anything on my C drive and just back up my D drive?
Hi what I need to find out I need to backup a windows 10 laptop and then transfer to a windows 11 laptop will my external drive that was formatted on my windows 10 still work on windows 11 without formatting thanks heaps
If you watch this bit here, 5:15 , you can set the schedule to run every 7 days, and make sure you plug in your external hard drive when your scheduled day is.
I am trying to Add a folder for my Thunderbird profiles. After navigating to the storage location and clicking, it doesn't appear in the Back up these folders list. ????
It seems like Thunderbird isn't picking up the new folder you've added to the backup list. No worries, let's try a couple of things to get it working. First, make sure you've selected the folder correctly. Click on the folder you want to add, and double-check that it's highlighted in the 'Back up these folders' list. If that doesn't help, sometimes Thunderbird needs a fresh start to recognise changes. Try restarting Thunderbird and see if that does the trick. And finally, if the folder you're trying to add isn't already there, you can create a new profile folder. Then, you can add that folder to the backup list, and Thunderbird will start backing it up for you. I hope these steps help you get your Thunderbird backup up and running smoothly!
I follwed every step up to starting the back up and it says "Backing up your data.." / calculating my back up size, but its been stuck like that for almost an hour now. I have a 1tb drive and should have plenty of space left over with what im backing up. Any possible solutions?

Thanks for the tutorial. It was easy and clear…just one question and that is after the auto backup annual delete does the application automatically backup or do I have to diary in another manual backup process?
Very helpful and easy ..thank you🤗
Awesome feedback, thank you - I'm glad this was easy to follow! Hope everything is all backing up well for you!
Shouldn't I see my back-ups on my ext. hard drive? I don't see them. What would they look like, how would they be labeled? Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
Straight forward & easy to understand, thank you! First video I seen was uploaded from 2015 but the actual content of the video looked like it was from the mid 2000s 😅
Got me a Seagate 2TB One Touch drive 😁
Awesome stuff and glad this was a helpful video. I think we saw the same video from 2015 and wanted to make a slightly better one 🤣
2TB - NICE!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent but not long enough pause on screen shots. Red ring round icons / headings to be clicked on would also be helpful..
I had to keep pausing, backtracking and pausing at each stage to scribble each instruction - later typed and saved.
Despit this, the best of several I looked at.
Thank you for the advice!! We will look at going slower next time and adding in more graphics to help follow along!
Glad you found it useful though! 🚀
TIA
Outstanding video! Very helpful!
Very nice explanation, Keep it up.👍
Can you please confirm one thing:
By this backup one can backup all the files of c and d drive right?
Thanks for the feedback and absolutely yes, you can backup files from different drives!
Thank you for your straight to the point help
If the external drive has other stuff on it does windows put the back up inside single master folder? or is everything loose folders?
Thanks for this - a great tutorial which really helped me.
Thanks very much. Great video and I even managed to work out that I am still on Windows 10, not 11, like I thought :( I simply followed your steps and explained and back up worked 100% Again, thanks for such an easy to follow video.
Great to hear that you found it an easy video to follow Don! 🚀
@@CloudNexus biggest question I’ve been having thank you👍
Is this process possible to migrate a SSD from an old laptop to a SSD M.2 drive and install the M.2 drive on a different laptop? Your explanation in the video of the external drive backup is wonderful.
Thanks for the video. I am not good with computers and i was trying to follow all the instructions, but when I got to the 2:30 mark in the video, I had a problem. My back up drive, did not have two parts, it only had one section and there was nothing called new simple volume. So I got stuck at this point. Any advice would be really appreciated.
i have the same problem! did you find an answer?
Im in the same boat
Great video - thanks! How so I include Outlook files in this back-up? I have a POP3 or IMAP email address ( can’t remember which). Thank you.
A thousand thanks. Very clear and easy to follow--and I'm tech stupid!
Thanks! So if you back up every hour, do you leave the external hard drive plugged in all the time?
Hiyaaa!!
Ideally yes, but don't worry if you need to unplug it to move around. As long as you plug it back in again, it will carry on from where it left off and start backing your updated files! 😊
@@CloudNexus thanks!
Woow! you are a HERO
Thanks alot, video was very very helpful. Thanks again👍👍👍
Awesome, We are glad you found it useful!! 🚀🚀🚀
Thanks again.
this is a good tutorial you explain it pretty simple.but i did it a little different i format my external ssd drive through windows explorer i didn't use disk management.when i open disk management it show the external ssd drive with the blue line call drive F no unallocated so i click back up.but like you said it does not show a progress bar i wish it did so it could give me and idea when it would be finish.just the external light is blinking so i think is backing up my files.do you think it is?
there! Thanks a lot for the help, I'm going to subscribe to your channel and keep up with all the videos!
Thank you, I appreciate the information
Will it also save browser cookies, saved Passworts in a browser, Progression in a game and so on. Or just a copy of the files.
life saver for people like me. thanks s much.
what is the difference between "Back up using File History" and "Back up and Restore (widows 7) ?
Which one is better for Personal Computer (PC). Any advice will be highly appreciated!
Hey there, Sorry for the late reply. -
File History: This is the go-to choice for casual users who want simple and automatic protection.
Recommendation:
For most folks, File History is the perfect balance of ease of use and protection. It's great for backing up your everyday files and giving you peace of mind. But if you need system-level backups or granular control over your backups, Backup and Restore is the way to go.
Hope this helps! 🚀
Brilliant video! Very easy to follow :D
excellent tutorial!
Thank you for your tutorial this is useful to me, and I also tried aomei, it's nice too.
Glad to hear that you found this video very useful! We are hearing lots of great things about Aomei too! 😊
I would consider x2 backup drives as the backup might need a backup.
Hiya - So yes, it's because it's a FAT file system on the SSD which is probably causing you the issue. Easiest way to convert it to NTFS is from the command line;
1. Hit Windows and type CMD to bring up a command prompt
Assuming that your SSD drive is drive E: you would type the following _(but change the drive letter to whatever your SSD drive is)_
convert e: /FS:NTFS
That should sort it. After that you should be able to extend the volume to the full size of the drive.
Remember that after formatting the drive the files in it will be deleted.
@@dcentral The files in the SSD that you format will be deleted after formatting.
@@MeneTekelUpharsin oh ok, then it shouldn’t be a concern for me as the SSD is new and nothing is stored on it yet. Thanks
The Backup experience is a bit different in Windows 11 (and it's not as good) - We've made a video on this here *th-cam.com/video/T3nGHvujWMA/w-d-xo.html**.*
You should be fine to buy a 1TB drive for your machine. Because of the way the backup works, it only takes incremental backups of any changes. It doesn't make a full backup everytime it runs. You should be all set with a 1TB drive.
Brilliant explanation, thank you
Great explanation. Everything works just as you described.
Glad it helped 😊
Hi, I cannot find "Unallocated" memory in my disk. I guessed that why when right clicked, there is no " New Simple Volume" option. Pls help to advise. I using Win10 with SSD External drive Thx
Hi, if I only save my back-ups for one year, what happens to therm at that point, if something happens to my disc on my computer and it crashes or something? I'm not understanding something here. Sorry. Thanks.

I have 2tb external hardrive and there was no "unallocated" space option. Why? Please help

How do you deal with the external drive's software wanting to run your backup settings? How do you switch from say Seagate Toolkit to Windows backup?
My D drive is my main work storage drive, only important files are stored there. Would I be able to configure windows to ignore anything on my C drive and just back up my D drive?
