I would need to know more about exactly what you're trying to do... likely formatting the second drive as FAT would do what you need but I am not sure. And if you do format the drive as FAT then it will erase whatever is on the drive so make sure to back it up first!
This is great. I am perhaps stuck with a new problem, I did transfer all my files from my Mac M2 to the SSD however some of the videos got automatically converted into HEIC format pictures. Can you please help resolve this? or is there another video I shall go to? TIA
I would want to see your exact setup because it doesn't quite work that way... meaning if you just copy images from one drive to another it won't convert them to HEIC automatically. Oops! I didn't format my external hard drive before I started transferring photos from iMac. Is that a problem?? It does say for Mac only on the Passport box. Can you tell this is my first time? 😊 Also, I'm having to create folders (by year) on the ext then select all photos by year on the iMac to copy. If you get info on the hard drive I bet the format is macOS extended journaled. When you get the my passport for Mac that’s the format they use. So I think you’re all good! But I would want to know why you’re moving precious photos onto a fallible hard drive… will you be making a second copy of those photos as well?

I was actually doing this for a friend and I told her to keep it in the plastic covering with the box and warned her not to drop it...because of what you said! 😉 I'm pretty sure you are correct that it formatted already as it was for MAC ios only. Hello, I just got a New Seagate external drive for my MacBook as. Christmas gift. I'm wanting to store videos on it. For the life of me I can't get the external drive to cooperate with the MacBook. Could you please tell me what I need to do?

I bought an external hard drive to be able to delete photos from my mac book to create some space Selected all and moved around 5,800 photos to the external but not as they appear on the mac in date order but randomly, the first one is in the correct place the rest are anywhere also there seems to be no way to make the icons the same size as on the mac, I might just as well but them on CDs or flash drives. Yes I have a copy of the photos but it's useless if you are looking for something presumably the only way to make an improvement would be in something like 6 month folders
I would not move photos to an external if the goal is to free up space on the Mac... because now you need to make a second copy of that external as well. Better to use iCloud syncing and pay for a bit of storage, then set the Mac to "optimize Mac storage" for the photos to live in the cloud. That way you can still see them and use the Photos app, in sync with your iPhone.
This is assuming this extra large file is saved to my MacBook. I just edited my first Vlog and was hoping to save it directly to my SSD. However, it doesn’t give me that option in LumaFusion. I am sorry for the slow reply! If you erase data from a hard drive step one is don't touch the HD or put anything on it... then I would go straight to the pros like drivesavers.com and pay for recovery. There are some apps and free apps that can do it but then you are risking making it worse and losing more data.

If you only want to use the disk with Mac I would format it APFS (not encrypted just regular APFS) or MacOS Extended Journaled. Yes if you format the disk it will erase it so you do need to copy that stuff to your Mac, or onto another hard drive before you erase the drive!
It might be because your external drive is formatted to NTFS (PC). Macs can only read from drives formatted in that format...So unfortunately you'd have to reformat the drive :(

In the past I had a MacBook Pro 13 inch with Intel i5 and I could format an external HDD or an external SSD (format HFS+/APFS) and I could use TimeMachine to backup. Now I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch with M1 chip I couldn't do it. Maybe I couldn't do it because the external drive is connected to USB3.0 via sata-adapter and the USB-hub for USB3.0 is connected to a USB2.0 port which is a part of a adapter device for a MacBook which only has USB-C and Thunderbolt. The guide/manual informs me that I could do it, if I would do it with a Thunderbolt- or a USB-C-connection. Do you know whether I could buy a cable which adapts SATA for an external HDD/external SSD with Thunderbolt or USB-C? When I speak about Thunderbolt, it's Thunderbolt 3 or newer. Thunderbolt 3 has PCIe with 4 lanes and Thunderbolt 4 has PCIe with 2 lanes.
I definitely did not teach you to do that! If you re-watch my video you will see the warnings and recommendations I mentioned. If the data has been deleted you will need to go to a data recovery company...

Do you know how to backup a MacBook onto an external HDD or an external SSD via a terminal? As I know correctly, TimeMachine makes the first backup like a total backup after formatting or partitioning and the next ones are incremental backups. I don't know why the other - i.e. the difference between the first backup and the new backup - aren't differential backups. Differential backups are good thing when the difference between the firs total backup and the new backup is large - e.g.: a month. But what does Time Machine do? Time Machine thinks it must be an incremental backup.
Yes but I haven't done it in years... if you want to use something other than Time Machine and you just want a copy of the files I would use carbon copy cloner from bombich software. It's fantastic and clean and just gives you a copy of the files.

Sick of everything I have being tracked and copied by Apple, Google, Adobe, and every other corporation. It slows everything down way too much and their AI is a future danger.
Easier if you open the Photos app and either File -> Export, or File -> Export unmodified originals. If you do regular export you get jpegs. Not sure what you mean? If you have files that haven't downloaded from iCloud then yeah you would want to connect to wifi first before copying them so they download to your Mac before copying to the external.
No… You would need to copy them to another hard drive or computer or both so they’re safe. Then use disk utility to erase / format the disk as I talk about in the video.

The drive would need to be formatted exFAT - which means erasing it, so be careful and back up any data that's on that drive before you erase it.

So you are moving files, not just copying or backing up ?
Basically yes, moving from Mac to external. But the technical process is first you copy them, then you delete them from the Mac HD.
I still can’t transfer my files to external so I basically waisted two hundred dollars on that crap. Stick to PC.

If you hold command while dragging using the finder it copies then deletes the files without putting them in the trash. Use this at your own risk!

No… You would need to copy them to another hard drive or computer or both so they’re safe. Then use disk utility to erase / format the disk as I talk about in the video.

Well, back when I made this video I timed the actual drag and drop transfer part of the video and it was under 3 mins. So if you leave out all my bla bla bla then it should be 3 mins 😁

Just got a new LaCie 2tb external usb-c hd. I plugged it in and used Time Machine. It did back up. But I didn’t formate it. Is it to late to format?
If Time Machine backed up to that hard drive at all then it’s the right format and you’re all good.
