    Comparing the 2016 Golf R to the 2016 Subaru WRX STI. The Golf R features a 2.0L turbocharged I4 engine producing 292 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque, while the STI features a 2.5L boxer 4 cylinder producing 305 HP and 290 lb-ft of torque. The Golf R is a practical hatch with plenty of cargo space, and refined both on and off the road. The STI features an AWD system capable of putting the power down better, through multiple LSDs, a rear torque bias, and a front helical limited slip differential as well as a rear Torsen differential.

      +Deutsche Auto Parts just honest opinions. I think the STI is a much better car than the Evo, but since I own one people find that comparison to be "biased." I try to keep points objective rather than subjective. The Golf R is hands down a better daily, but they are both wicked fun in the corners!

    • @EngineeringExplained

      +Gaco Bacov I believe the Golf actually has better aero (lower drag coefficient), or they're very similar.

    • @inkno701
      @inkno701 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      but don't forget that drag coefficient isn't everything in aerodynamics, even if they have the same drag coefficient the STI should have better downforce with its massive wing.

    • @tdawg719
      @tdawg719 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Vegaspsycho yeah that would be better for that 1 minute of the total time you own the car that you're going over 150.

    • @inkno701
      @inkno701 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tdawg719 True that, lol. I know that it's a factory wing and doesn't really make any difference when driving around under the speed limit. But I was just trying to say that a better drag coefficient doesn't necessarily make it a better car aerodynamically. Just look at the streamlined cars from the '30's, they had lower drag coefficients then modern cars but were unstable and unsafe at high speeds. Of course aerodynamics probably wasn't strictly to blame with old tire compounds and suspension designs.

    A consideration that you're not mentioning - if you live in a place where it snows regularly in the winter, that subaru AWD is pretty nice. It means you can leave your all season tires on and make it through the snow to your destination.
    With that Golf R, you're gonna be putting winter tires on, when it comes time for winter.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      +opl500 Somewhat. Winter tires will always have better cornering and braking in the snow, doesn't matter if the car is awd or not. The STI will have better traction for accelerating, but stopping is just as important.

    I appreciate that this is just a pure review of performance and drive-ability. However, after having owned a base model 2012 VW Tiguan S that I bought new in 2011 (which has a 6-speed manual with same engine as the GTI), I can guarantee I will never own another VW. At 40k, the water pump failed. At around 45k, I got a CEL where VW had to completely change out the intake manifold. And at 60k, the high pressure fuel pump failed, and the VW is starting to run rough - possibly from carbon build-up. Finally, whenever I'm driving over the pass and try to use the washer nozzles in cold weather (like going over the mountain pass and get sprayed with slush), if the nozzles are frozen, a fuse will burn up and I will no longer be able to lock my car doors. An issue that I never had with my old Subaru WRX and STI.
    And on a side note - the Tiguan is the only car that VW sells in the US that's still made in Germany (not sure about the R), so they can't even use the "it's made in Mexico" excuse. All Tiguans are imported from Germany through the Port of Houston, TX.
    The Golf R may very well be a top pick in terms of pure performance and drive-ability. But for reliability, I will not even consider the R or any other VW. The company simply hasn't figured out how to build a reliable car yet, and they put way too much electronics in theirs. If you want to spend your free time in the waiting room of a dealership instead of driving, buy a VW. I wish VW had it figured out, but they simply don't. My '88 Jetta was an amazing, trouble-free car, but of course, that was before VW crammed tons of electronics in their cars.

      +UgenixK There are several companies that offer stage 1 and 2 tunes for the new R. The GTI can be upgraded to the golf R turbo (is38) and tuned for that. There are likely bug turbo tunes as well, but I own a mk6 not a mk7 so I'm not fully aware of the more hardcore stuff for this platform.

    Two clarifications:
    1-- the variable steering rack in the Golf R is not "active" aka it does not vary based on sensors, vehicle speed or anything like that. The outer ends of the rack have different tooth spacing that gets progressively quicker at the ends. So the more steering lock you add, the faster the ratio becomes.
    2-- helical and Torsen are the same technology

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +o362436o fascinating about the steering rack, thanks for sharing. Torsen and helical act similarly, but accomplish it in different ways. They are certainly different diffs.

      Could you elaborate? My understanding is that Torsen - at least the T2 and T3 generations - uses helical gears just like.. well.. a helical diff. The newest torsens and their spin-offs use planetary gears.. is this the difference you are referring to? What else am I missing?

    The Golf R AWD is front wheel drive bias. But, it still functions well for slippery situations for bad weather and performance situation where the rear axle partially engages or torque vectoring.
    I think this is because the Golf R is really just a super boosted Golf with an AWD. The STI AWD system functions more like an Audi, though. Unlike the Golf R., Audi AWD is always split between the rear/front wheels, with RWD bias.

    The fuel economy difference between these 2 are astonishing and speaks to the fact that the STi's engine is very outdated. Why hasnt Subaru bothered to update the 2.5T or adopt a more powerful 2.0T?

    • @LiviuPavel

      +Liviu Pavel the STi is a WRX on steroids. Its superior in almost every way, yet their very similar. Imo, all they have to is apply the same upgrades to the 2.5L STi engine. If its too costly, cut the STi from the lineup or tweak the 2.0T from the WRX to make more power. The suspension and drivetrain of the STi can remain unchanged.

    • @antonmull6506
      @antonmull6506 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a reason why Subaru have kept the same engine for 20+ years. Also, they have develped the new FA20 boxer engine which i think can be found in the new 2015-2016 WRX. Plus, why would they want to change the EJ engine if it is such a good engine? The engine is designed for rallying and if youu look at Subaru's history this engine is actually pretty successful for what it is built for. But that is history and it's 2016 now so there must be some ways of getting better fuel economy

    As an owner of an STI, it's good that you aren't completely biased towards the STI. I own a 2016 STI, and compared to this Golf R, I don't regret my decision at all. I'm sure it's more comfortable, it's seem like the interior is much quieter, and I'm sure the materials are nicer. However, I know the STI will be more fun to drive, in my opinion. Also, I do most of my own maintenance and a Japanese car is so much easier than a German car. The Golf is also very ugly. I would be sad every time I walk away from my car and look back.

    A lot of people compare these two cars based on their day-one performance but what about reliability? These are performance cars that are presumably driven hard. The knock on the EJ for age is also a "pro" in a sense as it is clearly tested and proven. Will the R stand up to the same levels of abuse as the STI? Day-one comparison is a good starting point but how do these two cars stack up after 20 track days?

    I liked the review and think you are not biased at all, but as someone who watches car reviews a lot on YT, being a comparison video, I wish it would have included real world track performance. I see you make videos about how to launch a car, so why not bring them both to a track and actually show us which one is faster on a 0-60 and quarter mile? I understand that these might be brand new cars, and you don't own them, but i'd still love to see more of the "umph" come out, such as exhaust sounds, launches, even internal cabin quality, which I would give to the Golf R hands down... Love your videos and just giving my opinions. :)

    The steering in the Golf does not change based on the speed, but it is changing throughout the turning, turning the wheels quicker the further you turn the steering wheel ( resulting in about 1 turn less from full right to full left)

    Braking based torque vectoring is terrible for a performance car. It basically destroys your power and holds your car back. If you want to save tires on a daily, it does the job. But it cuts so much power than you basically don't accelerate much when it kicks in.

I like to do all the work on my cars myself so I am always interested in how easy or difficult it is to do both routine maintenance and more advanced servicing. Do you have to pull half the engine apart to get at the spark plugs? Does this car require a bunch of "special" tools to do anything?

      For me. When the cars are comparable in performance I just go for which one is more comfortable. cause if you need to go really in depth in the specs to determine which is "better" it means it can easily out drive the other car. So I take performance out of the question and just choose based on which I think looks nicer, more reliable, more handy, etc.

    Why is a Torsen LSD better than mimicking that behavior by using the brakes? (other than the fact that it will wear/heat the brakes less) I would think if anything, using brakes might be better since it should allow for more versatility since the software can be programmed to do anything you need. And it seems like it would save weight, too.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because a Torsen works prior to one wheel slipping, a braking system is reactive.

    • @RocketGuy3
      @RocketGuy3 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, guess that makes sense. But does that not also mean that an LSD is going to behave the same no matter what the traction conditions are like?
      ... Maybe I need to find one of your videos on how a Torsen LSD works, heh.

    • @RocketGuy3
      @RocketGuy3 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean like if it's raining or the road is cold, etc... A software-based traction control system that uses the brakes should be able to detect when the tires are slipping in any conditions. But a system that is pro-active and behaves in a fixed way would not. It's possible I'm misunderstanding something about how exactly a Torsen LSD works, but that seems like a key difference.

They’re meant to be fast and fun practical cars, and a dct seems like an obvious option to put, since people want to daily drive these things, and tbh manuals are annoying in rush hour traffic.

    I have a 15 STI. So obviously my bias will be blatant. Now that I have checked my symmetrical all-wheel-drive, and horizontally opposed privileges.
    (those aided and abetted STI in killing it again at the 24h NBR).
    Ha That being said I like the GolfR. I test drove them both the same day. The VW was lacking that feeling of a drivers engagement. Nothing threw the clutch, the wheel or the shifter. Notches and vibrations are the kind of feedback that gives cars personality. I understand why many journalists described it as a car for "boy-racers" or whatever. Disagreeing with me completely and would prefer something else. There are those people that trade in there car as soon as something newer is available. Their never attached to there cars. What I'm getting at is; this car will be leased not bought. That yawn inducing exterior man! I hate that every car looks the same. But I otherwise agree with your assessment completely good review!

I need something great on gas, safe, reliable, something that will last me a long time, and i live in new york and get a lot of snow so i need something good in snow. I'm hoping the R's and system is good because i'm leaning towards that. However, i hear VW is not very reliable and parts break very easily, and can be costly (coming from my mechanic) just wondering. Really could use the advice. Thank you very much.
