Not technically a death scene but the when Donna realizes that her memories will be wiped and she will go back to being the person she was before her time with the Dr. is the most heart wrenching, "death".

That's just 10. None of the other Doctors ever respond to regeneration that way. And 10 was written as specifically having a different, unusually strong reaction to regeneration.
I, too, loved Clara with 12. I think she challenged and deepened the 12th doctor in a way that allowed Capaldi to show his more serious abilities as an actor. Hell Bent was my first modern Who episode, and even knowing very little about the series at the time--I had caught a few episodes of DW years ago with the 4th doctor but wasn't very into it--I was hooked! I had to know more, and have since gone down the rabbit hole! I loved the strong women of the modern era, and Clara was one of the strongest.

Toberman, from 'Tomb Of The Cybermen', electrocuted as he seals the doors of the tombs, sealing the Cybermen inside. He knows he'll die, but he does it anyway. Ingiger, or 'The Ancient One', seals herself in with Sorin/Fenric, and then floods the chamber with nerve gas, killing them both, to stop the future changing for the worse.
@@MrDarkwing78 I do know that - but I'm a bit fed up of modern Doctor Who. I'll always go back to the old ones - having watched it since 1968 will do that - don't get me wrong, a lot of the new ones are great, but a lot don't seem to have that spirit of adventure, the 'I wonder how far we can go with this; how dark can we go?' ethos of the 1960's and 1970's stories.
I think Hartman's death is underrated. Yes, she was a bit of a pain as a character (great acting, btw), and her overblown patriotism seemed to be too much. But then she walks to her conversion with dignity, repeating that phrase, and then still saying it _as a Cyberman,_ she saves human (and a loose Gallifreyan's 😅 ) lives. She overcame the programming of the Cybermen! She should have been given the Victoria Cross for that IMHO. She put her fellow citizens - and by assisting them, by definition the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family - above herself. Having looked at her hard as she is being taken to be converted, I am convinced she kept repeating that phrase because she had the idea to work against them from the inside, if you'll pardon my word choice, and thought it might help her remember it. Just how I feel about it, that's all.

I think an interesting one is in the episode Let's Kill Hitler from series 6B, where after River kisses him with poisonous lipstick, the Doctor knows that he's going to die in half an hour. Instead of freaking out or giving up, he decides to dress in a fancy outfit and continue being himself for the last half hour of his life. His insistence on not having a bleak outlook coupled with his dismissive acceptance of his impending doom make it a fun episode.

The first one that comes to mind is Iain Glen as Father Octavian in "Flesh and Stone" with a Weeping Angel's hand wrapped around his neck, telling Eleven to leave him and to not trust River.
I've personally never viewed the Pompeii episode with the perspective that Donna thought she was going to die in that moment, though it is an interesting one. I've always seen it more of her realizing the gravity of the situation, that the Doctor is technically the reason Pompeii was destroyed, and her deciding that she will not let him take on that weight by himself, thus introducing us to her selfless nature.
Doctor who is very intense yet funny and I think David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston showed that best in their acting as the doctor and also those two had the best main companions in my opinion (Martha, Donna, Rose)
You forgot about Astrid peth It’s in the Christmas episode voyage of the Damned, she knows that unless she does what she does, there is no way the doctor is going to survive, and he hast to survive, which makes her more than just companion material. It shows why the doctor himself is so heartbroken when she dies when he cannot save her and he really tries. If you watch the episode and you see the look on her face it says everything. Ironically, the character is played by Kylie Minogue and she plays her brilliantly.
The one issue 99.9999999999% of stories with time travel has is that they can never stick to their own rules. It's not the first time touching one's past/future self was in an episode.
there are many multi doctor stories, but THIS one had two incarnations of the SAME doctor and Rose in the same place, the only other exception was big bang when the universe was ending anyway. And if you watched the multi doctor stories in EVERY instance THEY were not responsible for them meeting
Catherine Tate absolutely dominates every moment she's on screen in her season. There was so much development she had left and to see her character go from vain and shallow to a thoroughly decent woman by Journeys End and to have it stolen from her. The doctor took all that from her and it was easily the saddest moment of that season and a fate worse than death, and her acting in that scene shows it thoroughly.
Thank you for saying that Clara was better with the 12th Doctor!! Been saying her acting got a real chance to shine with him rather than the one dimensional, big-eyed, crush with the 11th! Clara was to the 11th as Martha was to the 10th.
I'm far from the first to say this, but in series 7 Moffat *really* seemed to think of Clara as a mystery plot first and a character second, if at all. It's a shame because Jenna *kills it* with good material.

I'm not sure how the third Doctor returning to the Great One's cavern in 'Planet of Spiders' doesn't feature here. It was the whole point of his regeneration, that he had to face his fear and that to go back would mean certain death. Could also mention the fifth Doctor in 'Caves of Androzani'.
@@morgaaaaaa still, the original comment was accurate! Plus, this list wasn't what I'd hoped for, either... where's Amy, when she turned away from the Weeping Angel to be with her husband? 2 of my favorites were both Amy. The one where they were in the dream but she crashed the van because Rory had died and the other where she gave herself up to the weeping angel to be with Rory
David’s farewell? Donna’s goodbye? Amy and the angels? River? You left out some of the best! I’ll give you Donna, since she didn’t technically die. But a better version of herself had to say goodbye. Everyone else not being included is a tragedy.
No. You have Tenant at the bottom of that list? He should have been in there twice. I’m still haunted by his final line especially since that was actually Tenant realizing his time was at an end as well and not behind sure he had made the right decision. I think the most harrowing “death” in the Whoniverse was Jack being buried in cement. And every time Tenant had to say “Her name was Rose.” I’m tearing up just thinking about these. 😆
Eccleston's Doctor had to lay the ground rules of what it meant to be a Time Lord for the new viewers AND reassure the classic Who fans that the series was back. It honestly doesn't matter what happened behind the scenes for the parting of ways for the BBC and Eccleston. The first series of the current Doctor Who ended in the only way it could; by showing the last rule of being a Time Lord...regeneration.
@@irrevenant3 I would like to think so. But I honestly don't think it would have worked for another season. I think without the information on regeneration at the end of that first season they would have lost all of the young people they wanted to capture with New Who on top of trying to make us older Whovians happy. I mean, we know regeneration is going to happen at some point. But the new generation? Given how popcorn instant gratification centric the world was becoming at the time they would have abandoned the show if it happened at the end of any other season.
Another good one is from the 11th Doctor's "Dinosaurs in Space" episode. The look on Solomon's face as he watches the missles flying right at his ship.... perfect karma.

Father Octavian? He may have only been in one story but he knew he was screwed, told the Doctor and Amy to move along instead of futilely trying to save him, and held off the Angel that grabbed him as long as he could.

Is there going to be a classic series version of this? A few more Doctor regens to use, particularly the 3rd and 5th Doctors, and plenty more self-sacrificing. Kane from Dragonfire is another one that sticks in the mind.
What about adric? Not only was his death completely unexpected and a "oh s*it" moment, his final line is the dictionary definition of "I'm dead and I know it"
It's still hard to watch "Face the Raven". Her cameo in "Heaven Sent" was excellent, saying so much with so little. I just love Jenna Coleman; she died three times on the show, and better each time. But some others were not included: Kylie Minogue did well and died spectacularly. Alex Kingston's River Song died well in the library, as the Doctor was just a little late in saving her. And Harriet (yes, we know who you were) Jones perished for Queen and country as well. And John Barrowman, well, he's just just a glutton for punishment as Captain Jack.
The more you think about it, the worse deal Billy got. Once they knew they had to get a message to a particular person (Sally Sparrow) at a particular time, there were *tons* of ways to ensure she got it. For example, I'm sure UNIT would have been more than happy to deliver a specific message at a specific time for the Doctor. Then, once resolved, Billy could've come back with Martha and Tennant in the TARDIS. But no, Billy has to live through the entire thing the long way round just to drop off a message. WTF, Ten.

That's just 10. None of the other Doctors ever respond to regeneration that way. And 10 was written as specifically having a different, unusually strong reaction to regeneration.
Clara was the best companion, and I actually cried when she died
Same. I sobbed. She had the kind of relationship with 12 that Donna had with 10 and it was perfect.

General Stal of the 4th Sontaran fleet, Stal the Undefeated, when the boy genius switches places with the Doctor. It was the epitome of an "oh shit!" face.
"Oh, that’s not a very good nickname. What if you do get defeated? Staal the Not-Quite-So-Undefeated Anymore But Nevermind.” 😂😂
I think the boy genius did it better, personally.
I was considering why Rattigan wasn’t included and realised his death belongs in a “Self sacrifice” list. I hadn’t even considered General Stal for this list. Excellent catch there!
I think that it was the 10th fleet

Toberman, from 'Tomb Of The Cybermen', electrocuted as he seals the doors of the tombs, sealing the Cybermen inside. He knows he'll die, but he does it anyway.
Ingiger, or 'The Ancient One', seals herself in with Sorin/Fenric, and then floods the chamber with nerve gas, killing them both, to stop the future changing for the worse.
Nice, but once again, that’s classic, not modern Doctor Who, and the intro specified modern Who ie. post 8
One that doesn’t really count, but I want to mention it because it gets me EVERY time: Idris saying “hello” to Eleven :’(
I think Hartman's death is underrated.
I think you nailed again Mr. Ferrick.. well, you and your team...lol I always enjoy YOU'RE videos the most... I think its because of the way you deliver it.. You truly are a fan!!
I think Clara's death was one of the most shocking, I remember watching that episode being aware it was Clara's last series but going "I didn't realise that meant they'd kill her off with still a few episodes to go!" I'd kind of assumed she was safe till the finale!
"Please" Donna Noble, Turn Left.
As much as agree with most of these... Where are Amy from angels take Manhattan, River from the library two partner and lastly, the combo of bill, missy and the doctor from the doctor falls😭

The most brilliant moment from The End of Time Part 2 is that when Wilf knocks, he knocks 16 times... four groups of four knocks. I count them every time I watch the episode.

@@jamesmayle3787 Piss off with your medieval bullshit
Great video, could you do a 2nd part about this covering the classic era, please
I both love and hate these moments
Father's day was actually the first episode I ever saw followed by the one with the cat nurses I forget the name of with 10
After that I was hooked
Father's day was my first episode too!
The cat nurses. Episode title: New Earth. I'm not surprised you forget it's name, it's not exactly flashy or memorable.
Adric, never knowing if his was right!
The list was from new who only.
@@krisgonynor689 then why not River Song?? She was from New Who, and KNEW she was dying to save the Doctor!
Wilf didn’t just knock on the glass 4 times… he did 4 lots of 4 knocks, just to rub that extra bit of salt in the wound
😂😂
I love doctor who, as an American. My last name is also Ferrick and it's so incredibly rare here, I've never met another Ferrick, not directly related to me. I get a little excited when Sean does a video.
This was great. You litterly had me in tears.😭
Donna in Turn Left.
I cry at tennant's regeneration every time :'( his speech was so moving and u could really feel his pain through david's acting. Same applies for clara's death like wow
Matt Smith's speech about remembering who you are and how you change throughout your life always gets me... especially the line: I'll always remember when the doctor was me

9:30 i say donna's perfect would be in turn left
She died to fix the timeline
The first one that comes to mind is Iain Glen as Father Octavian in "Flesh and Stone" with a Weeping Angel's hand wrapped around his neck, telling Eleven to leave him and to not trust River.
Uh... Dickens had already written "A Christmas Carol" before the events in The Unquiet Dead.
um actually dickens had already written "a Christmas Carol" before the events in the unquiet dead (nerd point stolen)
Harriet Jones: Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister.
Dales : We know who you are.
“Although I wouldn’t take back a moment of David Tennant” made me chuckle
You think the Reapers knew they were dead and were never coming back? Several temporal paradoxes since yet no Reapers.
Yeah when she offhandedly says 'yeah ok' to the Doctor when he leaves is gutwrenching
Please read at least three books of the Bible. The first book of each testament and one you chose yourself. As you do practice forgiveness. It’s an important step most skip. The Bible is truth. Jesus Christ is Lord’”
I'm not sure how the third Doctor returning to the Great One's cavern in 'Planet of Spiders' doesn't feature here. It was the whole point of his regeneration, that he had to face his fear and that to go back would mean certain death. Could also mention the fifth Doctor in 'Caves of Androzani'.
at the beginning of this video the narrator says that all of these are out of modern doctor who (9th doctor onwards)
@@morgaaaaaa still, the original comment was accurate! Plus, this list wasn't what I'd hoped for, either... where's Amy, when she turned away from the Weeping Angel to be with her husband? Where's River Song, who made sure Ten couldn't save her, so they would have their future (her past)? Either would have been vastly better than the Adipose's nanny! 🙄
@@MaryAnnNytowl Wrong episode for Amy. She doesn’t die at that point and wasn’t expecting to. This was simply a goodbye, if forever. A better choice would be Amy+36yrs in The Girl Who Waited (“Did I ever tell you about a boy I met there who pretended to be in a band?”)
Spot on with River, though
i don't disagree with either of you :) i would've liked to have seen the captain of the waters of mars saying a stern goodbye to The Timelord Victorious before 'rewriting history', but i don't know if that fit the criteria of this video. there's just too many dying people in DW !! xD
2 of my favorites were both Amy. The one where they were in the dream but she crashed the van because Rory had died and the other where she gave herself up to the weeping angel to be with Rory
Harriet Jones in the Stolen Earth... anyone?
Clara's fate was actually greatly postpone, since it was mentioned that her end still had to happen.
David’s farewell? Donna’s goodbye? Amy and the angels? River? You left out some of the best! I’ll give you Donna, since she didn’t technically die. But a better version of herself had to say goodbye. Everyone else not being included is a tragedy.
The Reapers from _Father's Day_ are super underrated, but I don't want to see them return. I don't want them to get worn out like the Weeping Angels.
I'm pretty sure they could've squeezed in another season before showing that rule without any harm being done.
It is a CRIME that Capaldi's moment of acceptance that he will have to stand and fend off the cyberman army while the Mondasian refugees in the doctor falls is not here.
"...and it remains one of the most fantastic." Was the reference intentional?
"I just want to tell you, you were fantastic! Absolutely fantastic! And you know what? So was I!"
Where is John Smith in Family of Blood??
WHERE IS AMY WHEN SHE FETS ZAPPED BACK IN TIME BY THE WEEPING ANGELS!?!?

I was expecting the 11th Doctor to come onto your list from the impossible astronaut
Late to the party, but it's only just popped up for me.
Whilst the episode wasn't one of the more memorable, Rita's Death in "The God Complex" should have made this list. Easily one of the more impactful that fall into this criteria

Is there going to be a classic series version of this?
A few more Doctor regens to use, particularly the 3rd and 5th Doctors, and plenty more self-sacrificing. Kane from Dragonfire is another one that sticks in the mind.
Hey can you guys add some stuff from the sarah Jane adventures and torchwood since they are the same universe as doctor who? If not it’s good lol
some videos do include Torchwood/SJA where relevant, like 10 Darkest Doctor Who Timelines. I hope they will be included more in future :-)
What about adric? Not only was his death completely unexpected and a "oh s*it" moment, his final line is the dictionary definition of "I'm dead and I know it"
*ACTUAL Number 1:*
_The Doctor dying trillions of times in Heaven Sent_
It's still hard to watch "Face the Raven". Her cameo in "Heaven Sent" was excellent, saying so much with so little. I just love Jenna Coleman; she died three times on the show, and better each time. But some others were not included: Kylie Minogue did well and died spectacularly. Alex Kingston's River Song died well in the library, as the Doctor was just a little late in saving her. And Harriet (yes, we know who you were) Jones perished for Queen and country as well. And John Barrowman, well, he's just just a glutton for punishment as Captain Jack.
Not having Father Octavian on this list is a disgrace - it’s the best “I’m dead and I know it” moment in TV, never mind just Doctor Who.
WTF, Ten.

Ok, so number 2 is not donna thinking she will die, it is that she willingly shared the burden of the deaths with the doctor. Saying «you dont have to carry the burden alone».
