    I think what really works with the characters is Sabre and Psi are forced to live lonely isolated lives detached from humanity through circumstance. They have every reasons to be cold and distant and unfeeling but they still have a great amount of humanity within them and I think The Doctor sees a lot of himself with the two of them. Psi says that his title says it all Doctor. The great emotional detachment. Doctors often do have to be emotionally detached from patients and cannot get too involved. They have to move on quickly. That's exactly like how The Doctor is. People come and go from his life and he never stays in one place for too long. He is always moving on. He is detached and lonely but still has that humanity and empathy and morality with in him.

    One thing that I really liked about this story was that it featured a good amount of the Moffat timey-wimey, but this time he (and Stephen Thompson) knew exactly how far to take it, without taking too far like was often done around this time.

    • @vullord666
      @vullord666 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I’d say Moffat really perfected the Timey-wimey stuff in 12’s run when compared to 11. It also felt a lot more subtle and didn’t distract from the plot.

      @@vullord666 What's odd is that I found 11's era to be the highlight and worst of the timey-wimey thing; like, it represented both the apex and nadir of this story-writing approach. I never really thought of it now but you are correct - pretty much none of the things I disliked during 12's, small or large, era were related to this, and sometimes (like Last Christmas) it was used to solid effect.

      Agreed, I was shocked to see it being listed as B-tier to be honest. Harry's stuff has really gone downhill this last year. Forgetting things like the Tardis translation matrix in Cold War and the entire gimmick of the Silence in Revolution of the Daleks is fine, but not when you're reviewing the program. I haven't really agreed with many of his points since his Flux review, but even then he sounds a bit bored. His Series 7 reviews are a bit subpar, and I don't even like Series 7 that much!

      I know that there are plenty of people who hate him, and several videos that talk about how bad of a writer he is (some claiming he's a bad person), but even though the final season of Sherlock was not on par with the first 2, or even 3. And I didn't like that they couldn't write her more grounded so Eurus was practically magic, and had Killgrave superpowers.
      When it comes to Doctor Who, when he's in his element he's among the best. The best Chibnall episode is not as good as a mediocre Moffat episode. Rtd is amazing and I can't wait to see what he will do next, I'm still hoping Moffat will want to and get to write a couple episodes for the next 3 seasons. I feel he and RTD not only truly understand the show, unlike Chibnall when they brought old things back they clearly knew that most of the audience hasn't watched Who prior to 05. So it was made sure to give the new audience proper set up. Moffat in particular could bring things back and treat it as the encounters happened on the many adventures we don't get to see between episodes. And I never felt like Moffat ever talked down to an imaginary audience that are never going to see the show to begin with. What's strange is Ruth Doctor never had that problem, so I kept wishing that she would not only come back but gotten her own show. She was one of the few good thing about the doctor being the timeless child, and the show in general.
      I would not mind when RTD is done if BBC gets Moffat to come back.

    I have absolutely no memory of this episode whatsoever. I must’ve been away for a week when it was on and forgot to catch up. I’ve watched the show every week since it came back in 2005 and as my son was old enough to pay attention to an actual TV show I’ve watched it with him (2007ish). As the family has grown we’ve continued to watch it with them, eventually including my parents from Matt Smith’s final run. I rewatch the show often with my youngest son, now 15, and we’re constantly thinking up Best- & Worst-of lists and then watching them and comparing and refining the lists. Redoing them when new series and episodes are aired (ahem Chris Chibnall 😂). It’s his favourite show of all time (he says at 15!!), and because of this it’s mine, too, because I love watching it with him.
    Yet I have no clue about this one. Even as your review is playing while typing this, I don’t recall a single second of it. I remember other episodes from series 8, and I’ve just flipped over to the iPlayer to check the listings and I remember the episode before it, and the one after (recently watched Kill the Moon which is the second one after this, because of your video and although my memory was fuzzy on that one, I remembered bits of it whilst watching your video).
    Anyway, none of this actually matters and I am just babbling but I’m so confused that I have never seen this episode. Wondering if I’ve missed anymore now

    I really don't agree with Harbo's view that series 8 is an underrated gem - It was the first time I *ever* considered giving up on watching DW for the first time in 28 years of fandom-, but I 'm in strong agreement on this, Capaldi's Doctor never gave a bad performance. I maintain that Tom Baker really was the best (I only started watching his stuff after watching Nu Who so this isn't nostalgia talking), but that Capaldi was giving him a serious run for his money. If he'd been allowed one more series, I think he would have cemented his legacy as the best Doctor. He was certainly my favourite. And yes, best and favourite are not the same thing to me in this case.

It's probably the only episode of this entire season (that and Mummy on the Orient Express--maybe Deep Breath, but only because I like the Paternoster Gang, not because I liked that particular episode) that I look forward to rewatching. Mr. TARDIS seems to have more of an affinity towards the Classic series. While you seem to mainly focus on the Revival series.
    I would be fascinated to see the chaotic outcome of such a debate.
    I can further understand how people talk to each other.
    That’s probably what Chibnall needed.

    it's so funny. to us information and journalism activist scientists, with probono work in protesting whistleblowers, hackers and journalists and whistleblowers are never the criminal. no matter what they reveal. if only the US would remember its roots in whistleblowing and information protection. ugh
    (I know this is a British show. don't be obtuse)

    It's amazing to think this episode predates Rick and Morty. It's both the Rickiest and Mortiest Doctor Who episode ever.

    No offense, but have you thought about going back to your old style of videos where you showed more clips of the show? I enjoy your reviews, but ever since you’ve begun to rely on more footage of you staring into the camera, it really takes me out of the immersion.

    there is a marked difference with the well done social commentary of the bast seasons and the ham fisted poorly made seasons of the last few years.

    You can call the heartless corporate character as woke. But this type of character has been portrayed for ages.

    • @markpostgate2551
      @markpostgate2551 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And in fact, "woke" Who, at its "wokiest" doesn't care about corporations; look at "Kerblam!" - has Doctor Who ever simped so hard for big corporations than in "Kerblam!" - the whole point of "woke" is it is really apolitical, substituting actual politics for divisive identitarian virtue signalling.
      No one would be at all offended about Doctor Who having a go at big corporations and it has always done that from the IMC in Colony in Space to the Ood slavers of Planet of the Ood. That isn't what people are complaining about when they complain about "woke".
      It is pretty clear that "woke" was released into the meme supply in the wake of Occupy Wall Street precisely for the purpose of taking the heat off of big corporations, governments and corrupt institutions because a public divided against each other over petty identity politics is much less of a threat to the status quo and the bottom line than the public actually directing their anger towards those with power.

    But modern Doctor Who is woke. Time Heist is not. Things being political doesn't make them woke. Weaving a message into a story isn't woke. Slapping the viewer in the face constantly with the message and demonising them if they disagree is woke. It's fine to put your opinions in if you do it gracefully and respectfully, but not if you treat the audience like they're just dumb children and you're some kind of messianic prophet that everyone should follow. That's the difference between pre-chibnall and post-chibnall Who.

    • @markpostgate2551
      @markpostgate2551 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Except... hmmm... some woke messaging starts to show from season 9 onwards, possibly season 8 if the "men shouldn't express an opinion on abortions" message of Kill The Moon counts. Albeit it goes full unleashed from series 11 onwards. I think for the most part Moffat managed to offset it and countetbalance it in many ways.
      The "woke = political" false equivalence is upheld by both sides though. I noticed in praising Godzilla Minus One (as well they should; it's a bloody masterpiece) one anti-woke critic praised it for having "no hint of politics". What on Earth can he mean; no politics?!? It criticizes governments that manipulate the public by witholding information; that men are treated as disposable during wartime; it has a strong anti-war message; it discusses issues like post traumatic stress disorder, survivor guilt. It's hugely political, but it's not divisive and it's not identitarian and for that reason it doesn't read as "woke" and that is clearly what they meant.
