My grandfather was born in the same year as Mrs. Garcia. He, too, fought in WW2 and never talked about it much. He was Black American, and the small stories he told was heartbreaking. Black soldiers were not treated very well in the military. Then he fought in Japan only to return to the segregated. He didn’t get voting rights until well in his 50s. Think about that! And for those who say the Confederate flag is part of their heritage. It’s part of mine too in many ways. My grandfather, along with surviving Black veterans, would March at the state capital on MLK day to remove the that flag from the capital building. All those old men died never seeing that flag removed. I lived to see it, though. My grandfather is my hero. He loved everyone regardless if they loved him back.
Sincere appreciation for the service of your precious Grandfather in every category that America called on him. There has been so much injustice and you do well by him to put him in the warm light of love where he belongs.
Praise God for his generation. The sacrifice and the perseverance!!!! My great aunt is 105 and was a nurse. She didn’t serve in the military, but that generation is of an ilk full of strength, determination, and deep abiding love.
I'm Haitian American who served in the US Navy for 8 years and i was in tears during the entire video. Thank you for this amazing story David. Wow! She's a lovely and sassy soul. I love her granddaughter.
She's a very spry, and bubbly 102 year old. I'm so glad that America and the world is giving her her flowers while she can see, touch and smell them. Wishing you many, many more, ma'am!!
That's a sad injustice too. We need to have our history books reflect the history in fact. I see it mainly acknowledges white heroes of the war. But skips over the sacrifices of soldiers of many ethnic groups. This is why I study history for more than what the school books are telling us.
There is an Audible series called The Home Front, and it goes into some of the history of BIPOC soldiers and civilians during WWII. They also discuss some of the women’s regiments, but not about this particular topic. I’m glad that CBS This Morning decided to run this important story.
@@Nurse-Laura there's a podcast that my son listens to about history of our country and it's things we're not even aware of. Love this woman, you can tell she is so much fun even at 102 years. I am sure her attitude has helped her live. She is still so beautiful inside and out.

My great grandmother was a black woman that was sent to Russia during WWII to see how their economy ran. She was already a grandmother at that time. She was raised around Russians in Maryland and spoke the language very well. She was also the president of the Philadelphia's ladies garment workers union. The first black one in the country.

My grandfather was like Mrs. Garcia, viewed as LESS THAN in the United States SEGREGATED ARMY. He was treated better by the German POWs he was guarding. The Europeans would ask to see his "monkey tail, hooved feet." Something they were told he had by white American soldiers. So no we shouldn't be grateful, for having our Elders disrespected while fighting for the freedoms of others under their country's flag, while viewed less than human by their OWN country.
From one female veteran to another. Thank you for your patriotism in WWII and throughout your life. Thank you for leading the way for us. Thank for your service!!!! 🙏🙏🙏💕💐🥃

David and Vlad -both so sincere
Such a beautiful woman. So humble she saaved lives but to her its like she didnt do much. Amazing. Its so sad that so many black soldiers down played their contributions. So many of their families never knew only found out right after ot years after their passing while going threw their things.
Such a wonderful story!!
Young generations should be greatfull to their ancestors, grandparents, people who have given us free World , no matter ur from which ever country always respect and be greatful to them
Maam Thank You so much for service 💜❤️
At this age still ur full of life
God Bless you
CBS Thank You for sharing 🥰
We need more than a thank you, have you seen the high rate of homeless veterans? Why should a veteran need a co-signer to get a VA loan? A Bunch of rubbish.
Ime so proud of Mrs Garcia. On behalf of all our melanated elders past and present I can share in Mrs Garcia and her families achievement, pride and glory. 💝🙏🏿

I’m so happy to share this story with fellow Veterans. I served honorably as a U.S. Marine and truly enjoyed the honor of hearing this story. She’s simply blessed and highly favored.
As a veteran, there are a lot of stories that go untold. We do our service and don’t talk about it much with our children and grandchildren. Sadly, these stories disappear like dust in the wind.
OMG….she is so sweet!!! Thank you, for giving this hero the recognition she deserves.
