Heck, he's moving really well, not just for a 90 plus year old, but also an 80, a 70, a 60, and even a 50 year old. Amazing.

It’s the heat I’m worried about
In addition to my first reply here of my admiration for this 90yr.old working man, i worked in the grocery business from 16yrs. old to 41yrs. old.. started as a bagger, clerks helper, and worked up to store manager. Started in a completely different business from 41 yrs. to 66yrs.old. Self employed. I'm 71yrs.old now, and not a day goes by that my hips, knees, and back don't hurt and ache something awful from that 25yrs in the grocery business I did. Once again, much respect for this man, 90 yrs.old

A lot of the elderly weren't / aren't good people but we allow elderly to blind us anyways. When you see elderly do bad things on shows like American Greed or To Catch a Predator (elderly pedophiles) it will change your mind.
But give away $100 billion to Ukraina, $30billion to Israel. and many billions to other countries.

He is getting social security not a military retirement, which means either he wasn't in the military long enough to collect or he does not know he can. Maybe the lady that helped him can research and see if he is eligible to collect a military retirement as well.

He obviously didn't make enough money to put in social security. So that's what he is getting per month. Most likely didn't have a large retirement funding or savings for the future. This is why you should have an actual retirement plan and start saving for your future and not relying on social security or Medicaid unless you need to.

I wondered about that too because I have a cousin that was in the Navy for about 6 years and she got on the veteran's disability claiming she's bipolar. That was 30 years ago and I don't know how much she gets but she lives a better life than a lot of people who are working 50 hours a week.

This hits home. I'm retired AF as well and sad he has to be in the heat at that age and wasn't able to enjoy Memorial Day as a veteran.

How said that he had to wait until the age of 90 for someone to help him. Imagine the tens of thousands of people who have probably seen him working going into the store and they did nothing. Let me get my violin. My granddad was an old air force guy, too, who lived to be 94. He wanted for nothing in his later years because he planned ahead and was frugal with his money his whole life. He's buried with his wife in Arlington National Cemetery.

$1.100 a month for a veteran is a slap in the face. So insulting for our veteran who set an ultimate decision to protect and serve our nation.

It wasn't because he is a veteran. That was his Social Security. There are a few Veteran classifications also, just cause your a Veteran does not mean you get anything for serving, if you retired then yes you can get a pension, you might be a Veteran with a Serive Connected Disability like me, I got a small disability I got 84 dollars eventually got an additional raise in my disability rating to 20% and now I get $350 a month, others get around 2k+ for 100% disability, then there are non-service Conected Veterans they do not get anything other then some medical care. Good that the community came through for him though I am just clarifying about the Veteran part of it because so many people seem to think just cause you are a Veteran you are supposed to get money from someone and that is not the case.

What a beautiful story, for a heartbreaking situation. No 90 yr old should have to be pushing carts in hot weather. Its fine if he wants a job to keep himself busy, but to need to work just to eat and in this kind of job at 90?

The major lesson here isn’t that Karen Swinson did a great thing by helping this individual veteran. It’s that many seniors in the United States have to work this hard to survive.
People need a budget. Manage your money and you won't need to beg or have someone beg other people for money for you.

Its a heart warming story and Karen is a true change agent. But I'm just disappointed that we live in a country where a 90 year old Veteran is working on MEMORIAL DAY, just so he can afford to eat.

Sadly I only can think of all the folks that served our country both in and out of the military that live lives this close to the bone every day, week, month and every year that don't care to accept money in this manner. They should have more dignified and honorable lives not based on a go fund me campaign. Seems to ignore the real issue and problem underlying dire poverty.

It's a feel-good story and a great outcome, but let's not lose sight of the the bigger picture. For every Dillon McCormick there are many, MANY people who (a) aren't so lucky to have an individual take time to promote their plight and offer assistance, and/or (b) don't live long enough to cross paths with such an individual...after all, Mr. McCormick spent *ages 67 through 90* struggling just to make ends meet. We can do better, but it will require that we systematically get in front of the problem, as opposed to waiting for the charitable acts of others to occasionally address the issue after the fact.
He could have gotten a loan years ago when houses were cheap and paid for it by now. Not impressed with him he or her and his story.😢

Here in Nashville TN we have a community group called Fifty Forward; it’s a fitness center, exercise classes, social gatherings, day trips, arts and so much more. (7 locations). Keeps your mind and body active and weight off.

@@michellejessup6618 but you don’t know that. I spent decades working in a grocery store, and knew lots of seniors who worked outside with carts. People don’t realize that working in a grocery store, and then outside is a huge temperature change, and you can get sick. Many seniors are cold working inside, as a grocery store is about 70 degrees to keep produce fresh.

This Veteran definitely needed the money to survive for sure. However, this guy is a worker. Period. It's what he's done all his life. It's who he is. Very motivating. I appreciate this man.

Where was the community and the supermarket in the past 20 years? He's been pushing shopping carts in hot and humid Louisiana for a long time. No one else inquired? Winn Dixie certainly didn't care. Even if he insisted on pushing carts all day, they could have easily steered him into a position inside the air conditioned store that's appropriate for someone his age.
$1,200 rent, $300 food, $400 utilities and phone , $600 transportation per month. So $2,500 minimum wage! Need to counter this corporate greed made inflation.
Whether one knows it: This is what we are all here for.... To be of service and to love and be loved.
