“Don’t be nervous” is the biggest load of BS! Here is why…

  • A lot of us grow up thinking it’s bad to experience “nervousness” and “pressure”.
    -
But in reality, these are good and natural human emotions.
    -
Society has programmed us to believe that emotions which are more comfortable such as kissing a romantic lover or eating ice cream, as “good”
    -
Yet conflicts, pressure, sadness, etc are all “bad”.
    -
This isn’t true! They are all neither…
    -
Once you can accept and understand that, you’ll have less monkey chatter inside your head and be able to perform well in anything (particularly sports) no matter what feelings come up!
    -
Parents and adults mean well when they say “don’t be nervous”.
    -
But it’s the worst advice they could give. They just don’t know any better.
    -
It would be like trying to “not be hungry” when someone starves you for 10 hours+. Your hunger levels are there to tell you “I need to eat soon or it isn’t healthy”.
    -
Pressure is just a stimulus telling you “I’m in fight or flight mode”. To try and avoid that would be to try and deny a feeling that is natural, and unavoidable.
    -
Then when you try and deny that feeling some more, you get anxious about the fact that you are anxious. Then you feel horrible about the fact that you’re rattled, and you are focused on anything BUT the match.
    -
This is why it’s better to accept the feeling as is, and move on to focusing to how you will play the next point.
