I am new in Table Tennis, my points is about 1200, please let me what kind of blade, rubber for forehand and backhand I need to have, to improve my games. Najmeh Griffin
I lose many points when the ball comes slow and high to may backhand. This is probably one of the weakest aspects of my game. My issue is that I notice too late that this scenario happened, and then can't properly attack such a ball because it is too high. How can I recognize such balls sooner so that I can get ready for them and either attack them sooner, before they get too high, or step back?
yep, high level table tennis really is 1.) Noticing what kind of ball is coming 2.) Having the right shot/strategy to deal with it You need to first train by isolating this shot (someone gives you a slow ball to your backhand one at a time) Once you are comfortable doing the 3 shots I outline in this video, then you want to be doing the same type of practice but with a bit more randomness. i.e someone gives you either a fast or a slow ball, and you have to be able to use one of these 3 shots when you DO NOT know when the ball is coming there. Next step is to do it in pointplay, when you completely don't even where the ball is coming and when the ball is coming to your backhand slow. It's a process that requires experience itself in training, but this is the fastest and most direct way to solve this issue, which make no mistake, is costing you matches
When making an underspin serve, it is said that if the ball contacts the lower side of the paddle, it produces more spin, and if it contacts the upper side, it produces less or no spin. Why? This video claims that in the former case the ball rolls on the paddle, and in the latter case it can't. I don't think the ball rolls on the paddle. The ball contacts the rubber, the rubber grabs it, and then catapults it. Slow motion videos show the same. My guess is that when the ball contacts the lower side of the paddle, the paddle is moving at its highest speed, and when it contacts the upper side, the paddle is already slowing down or is almost slowed down to a halt. Can somebody who knows shed some light into it?
Would you like a video where I show and explain this in depth?
Yes please, it would be very enlightening. I haven't seen a single video showing this.
I'm pretty good at taking the forehands but the backhand sucks bad when I get a duck to hit, I have a tendency to "double think" and choke the shot...I tighten up.
Blocking and pushing is the quickest way to 2000 level...average points at amateur level is 3 touches of the ball 5 touches at Pro level the rallies are longer.
Great tips!!
Thank you! What else would like to see help on?

I can serve short from my white line :) the opponent dont know what going on: short, or long coming? and I can serve long with heavy backspin to the corner ;)
Good lesson
thanks man, what did you like about it most Christo?
Nice video, not exactly sure if throwing hand can cover contact point though.
thank you. It will, but its also illegal and a good fair umpire should call it a fault, in todays game
Very good tip.
Glad it was helpful Allan!
Hu is it wrong for me that I find it easier to engage my wrist if I change my grip slightly on the racket. I find my index finger gets in the way of me finishing the wrist movement (getting on top of the ball). But it feels like committing a cardinal sin 😅
Posting in the community: Here is my attempt for fast serve training. th-cam.com/video/35984Bljs_Y/w-d-xo.html If you could shed some light, that would be great... I enjoy this serve a lot and without a shred of doubt, this has the max ace potential if served properly. But I still needs to improve. There is particular angle, height & contact point . If you get those right, it is just outright winner. Last but not the least, Heming, we love your content and teaching style. It's very effective and motivational. Thank you for posting these videos. Hope you have a great success with your channel.
nice man! Good serving, you can hit it even faster and harder if you strike even closer to the white line. Also, develop a long and fast serve with sidespin and backspin together. Yes, it will sacrifice a little bit of speed, but it'll a much tougher serve to receive. We all hate a long fast sidespin serve to our backhand, and the reality is, what you hate is probably what others hate too. Thank you for all the positive feedback man! Go get em!
great video
Hello heming, is it possible to loop this serve diagonally this way? Im thinking even if I do neutralize the sping by changing direction, the opponent will still anticipate in his FH are for a killshot. I find it very difficult to receive this ball diagonally
I watched again. It is crazy how liitle things is important. I had always problem not to pull arm down before forehand top spin. But in this video it is said that wrist have to guide the whole hand. Only think about the wrist and fingers before execution the shot!!
Hi Heming. Could you maybe explain how spin is/can be generated? Especially with hard rubbers like the hurricanes. I always hear that to create spin, a "long dwell time" is required and you need to grip and accelerate the ball. But no one talks about "How" to increase dwell time. Is it just a matter of acceleration? Does it require to hit the ball at a specific angle? How do different sponges affect the spin generation? This is what I found out over the internet: I heard that to generate spin, the ball has to sink into the sponge, the sponge deforms, stores the energy and then releases the ball with the energy being "transformed" into spin. This would explain the "long dwell time" and "gripping" the ball and why softer rubbers are able to produce more spin when you are not using much energy. But how does it work on a serve?
Great question. I founded a formula for spin Spin = Speed that the ball and bat meet together, multiplied by, the amount of time they spend together upon contact. This is why the wrist and finger movement being maximised, is key for good spin. On such a light racket, moving our fingers and wrist fast (as well as ensuring you are hitting a shot with the most efficient wrist movement, will ensure the bat moves fast and grips it as much as possible, which increases the dwell time. Hope that helps. Would you like a video on answering this question?
8:27 Ouch 😭!!! Fire content
Thanks man!
I didn't realise my grip was so off until watching this.Such a simple change, which I'm sure makes a huge difference in the development of spin. Thanks for putting out this material - looking forward to more!

nice... but how to serve tho?
I kind of disagree to some extent. My opinion is that the ideal state is one of focus, alertness, and relax at the same time, without being nervous. Most of the games I lost I was nervous. Finding that zone of balance of relax, focus and alert has worked for me. Another important thing is the ability to reset after losing a point while making the most of the learning that comes out of losing a point to win the next points ahead. Dwelling too much with a negative attitude on lost points, will negatively affect next points.
"Another important thing is the ability to reset after losing a point while making the most of the learning that comes out of losing a point to win the next points ahead. Dwelling too much with a negative attitude on lost points, will negatively affect next points" This part you are saying is 100% true. This part " My opinion is that the ideal state is one of focus, alertness, and relax at the same time, without being nervous. Most of the games I lost I was nervous. Finding that zone of balance of relax, focus and alert has worked for me." Is simply wrong. It's not a matter of opinions, the facts are When Fan Zhendong and Ma Long play for Olympic titles, they are extremely nervous before those matches, playing for their dreams, and playing for the face of China to remain the world's dominant country. After now having coached hundreds of club level players worldwide to achieve results they couldn't be themselves after years of stagnation before coming to me for help, they all had this common struggle that they thought was their issue "I struggle in matches but feel great in training". And with the exception of 3 of them, ALL of them in reality has issues with their skillsets, it is just easy to "feel" and "think" that its the nervousness of matches that causes you to lose. You simply need to be able to play well under pressure. You will experience pressure everytime you have the expectation/desire to win/not lose. It's a normal human emotion. People think its a bad thing but its simply not. If someone was to raid your house with a gun, you would feel nervous. Is that a bad thing? No, its a safety mechanism and a survival instinct within how our brain is wired. Think about this, if you were super nervous, but I gave you 11 lobs to smash on every set, would you still find a way to win most points? Most likely yes. The reality is that people who think they struggle when they get nervous, simply have not developed the necessary skillsets in training, to deal with all the nuances that happen in match play, not to mention the awkward opponents you encounter

Very Good advice. Thank you so much
thank you very much! It is help me a lot! :) yesterday i lose 3 matches against lower level players > they serves every time illegal serves and i cannot handle this. I tell 2 times , hey bro this is illegal. Okay, he serves a legal serve, i win the point, but the next time he serve already the illegal serve. Probably he serve like this for 30 years...the cirumstances kills me, and i not find the present moment, but now i know this, thank you!
My pleasure man! Yes, you gotta stay focused "How do I win this next point" and just focus on what you CAN control. When you focus on how to win the next point and start asking yourself deeper questions like "What has been winning me points in this match against this guy"? "what does he not like" "what is probably going to work" You start to focus on your one job that matters, rather than external factors that very much take you out of the present moment and cause you to perform worse. It's NOT the nervousness that is a problem AT ALL, its when you lose focus on the next point and what matters. THAT is what causes a lot of people to play worse. The better you get, the more nervousness you will experience, you just tend to be able to handle higher levels of pressure. Liam Pitchford struggled for decades before he finally learnt how to cope with the level of nervousness he experiences week in week out. The way he overcame it was NOT to no longer feel nerves, he is a human like all of us, he just was able to play well despite being nervous, key point
these vids are so gold literally hidden gem
My level goes way down during a match especially if it is in the evenings P.M. I prefer to play in the A.M. where I can perform at 2000 level. In the evenings I go to 1300 level at times, and it is terrible to feel this happening. I am 65 and I practice hard.
yep, I can definitely relate to match times, as I am the complete opposite. I love night matches and HATE mornings with a passion. However, a strategy I used in training that still helped me win big titles that had big important matches in mornings, was to have my practice sessions in early mornings. That might work for you to do some night sessions to adapt to it and at least raise the standard you are playing at a night time

Hi Heming, i have a quick question about Strength Training and Ping Pong. Iam a Former Ice Hockey Player and now i am Training 3 Times per week weighted Calisthenics/ Powerlifting and playing table tennis 4 Times a week. Do you think i can still improve well in table tennis while getting stronger physically? Thank you very much!!
Hey Artem, you can definitely improve well in table tennis 1000000% The question is: Will you get injured powerlifting as the risk of lifting such heavy weight is definitely there, when deadlifting past that 2.5xBW range. I loved a little bit of powerlifting and hypertrophy once i retired. But before that, my PT only really got me doing strength and power phases that got me to 2xBW and didn't see any reward worth the risk of pushing beyond that. Hope that helps, i'm not a PT but have been in the industry before, but that is what I can say based on my experience in the industry selling personal training, and having my brother who is a world class PT help me before events, and he is also someone who has been to a high level in TT. You DM'd me this on IG as well right?
Hi, thank you very much for your answer! Yes i also wrote you on insta 😊. I had some issues with Regeneration and injuries before, but now i slightly changed my Workout Routine and i dont have that Problem anymore. I will keep up the passion for both sports then. You are a big Inspiration!
