  • Hey There,
    Thank you much for taking the time to watch my care video on the Majesty Palm, aka Ravenea Rivularis. This palm has gained popularity over the recent years and, as the owner of two, I wanted to share my experience with them. This quick video goes over lighting, watering, humidity, and winterizing. Let me know what you think and if you have any other questions or even more enlightening information, I definitely encourage you to leave a comment. Subscribe and I hope we can grow together.

    I hope you all enjoy this care video! Let me know if there are any other tips you guys find helpful. One more tip about winterizing is, if your palm tree is unable to be moved, you can wrap the base and leaves in burlap or bubble lap - just make sure to leave a small space that you can water.

      If I can give general advice, all the plants you’ve accumulated love bright light, so a south/west window would be ideal (especially since the days are getting shorter). Water each when the soil is dry and if it’s growing you can fertilize it once a month. Other than that you’re good to go. I’m always here for any other plants questions 🪴

Do you prune them like I said I am not a plant person I would rather fix a car lol but wveryone says you need plants around your house so theres that apparently my house is boring lol. How often should I water them? This is the second time I am buying and it's dying with dry leaves. Last time the root was rotten.
    I keep it inside in front of a huge window.last time I put it outside all leaves became yellow in one day.

  • @Weekend658
    @Weekend658 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Yellowing is caused by chemicals inside tap water or hose water. You need to water your palm trees with filtered water or water that has been sitting out for at least 24 hours.

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the extra info. Keep in mind yellowing can also be related to overwatering/root rot and/or a lack of nutrients.

    Hey! What are signs of over watering?? Instead of the crisp edges I’ve had leaves look dull brown.
    Also how do I know if it needs to be repotted. When I water the plant, the water drains out of it IMMEDIATELY, almost like it doesn’t retain the water at all!

    Hi! My palm is in my room that unfortunately runs a bit cold. This may be a really dumb idea, but do you think I could bring it with me in the bathroom while I shower so that it can receive that steam and humidity every day? Or would the fluctuation between the steam and then colder air be detrimental to it? Love this video :)

    I just got a beautiful tall majesty palm from Home Depot on sale. I’m so sad. The tag said Full Sun and I placed it outside on my balcony. The first warmer day and it seems like the plant got fried 😔 I thought I was supposed to let the soil dry before watering again that’s what they always say but I guess it likes to stay moist? The sun can be really really hot here in Northern California. And dry. I didn’t know these plants needed humidity. I hope I can save it. I also saw tiny gray mites in the soil. I read that is another sign that the soil is too dry? I’m going to try moving it to a bright spot without direct sunlight hitting it. Aw, I hope I can help it grow back to being lush and green again!! 😕

    I had my majesty palm on my deck and I have a very small deck I brought it in for the winter in the fronds are getting to, I guess oh, you would say front? They're spreading out too much and the plant is not going to fit on my deck anymore and I didn't know if there's any way to make it grow more upright without the fronds taking up so much space. Thank you so much :-)

    • @chrisjames9580

      Unfortunately there is no way, that I know of, to make palms grow more vertically than outwards. The only thing I could say is to remove some fronds that are taking up room but that can potentially stress out the palm and do damage. I hope this provided some insight

    Great video! My question is: I just bought a rather large, robust Majesty Palm from Home Depot, and I can see some small roots sprouting up. It looks like it will need to be repotted. What should I use to re-pot so that I am sure it will drain properly? I won't be able to lift it and put in shower or sink to soak it and then drain it.

    I have one on the porch that probably needs repotting and water. The ends are browning but it's still cute.
    I planted one and I love it blowing it the wind.
    Now I want more!! Buying them now at $12 each and keeping them outdoors in pots until planting in the ground is cool right?
    We do have frost here... definitely all 4 seasons but I want palms all year round outdoors.
    This seems possible since reviewing your video. I'm going for it 😁
    Now I have seen palms for the sale with the leaves browning already how can I save them?
    Seen them outdoors in shade at home depot.

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It takes super optimal conditions for palms to remain completely green, so brown edges are to be expected. You can absolutely plant them in the ground, this will also mean you won't have to water and fertilize as much.
      If you purchase a palm with browning tips you can always trim them off or cut the entire frond completely. Pruning the palm on a regular basis can help improve it's growth rate.
      Don't forget to fertilize once a month and keep the watering on a consistent basis.
      Happy Planting.

    Hi!
    I just got a Majesty Plam. It was in the clearance section of Lowes and while it does need some love it's not completely ruined or so malnourished that it couldn't be saved like the others.
    This is my first palm and I want to do this right (even if it's the dead of winter and everyone has been saying it's the worst time to take one).
    My question is - do I need stones at the bottom? I want to replant this baby asap cuz it looks like it out grew its nursery container and that's what killing it. I don't have stones right now and wanted to know if that part could wait a few days after the snow storm where having.
    Thanks for everything in advance! 💖

      Hey there! Props on picking a rescue Palm for your first. In my opinion, I don’t think stones are super necessary. I would just get a palm specific soil (miracle gro and espoma both make one) and repot. If it’s super root bound maybe go up 3 inches in pot size, instead of two. I hope goes well, ask any other questions ❤️

Also you mention spray something warm water and lemon juice any kinds of liquid dish wash that I can use it! Thanks I am excited to hear you advice saving my majesty palm tree! I learned watching your video. Thanks I appreciate your response.

    • @zp944
      @zp944 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the plant is yellowing from the bottom up, and especially if the yellowing is spreading from the vein of the leaf rather than the tip, that's a sign of disease.
      It could be any disease - so the best blanket way to combat that is to add fertilizer once a month at half strength.
      But if any plant is yellowing from the base up, or the new growth doesn't seem healthy compared to the old growth, it's probably disease or root rot

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The size of your palm won’t change due to pruning. It will eventually get root bound and you will need to repot, I would say within a year or two after you initially purchased it. Palms enjoy being a bit root bound, which can slow the growth a bit. If you’re interested in a smaller palm, check out the parlor palm. They never grow taller or wider than 3 or 4 feet. Hope this info helps.

      I prefer to use the soak and dry method. When the top two inches are dry (or you can just stick your finger in the dirt and check if it’s dry) and then water until it comes out of the bottom. In the winter you’ll have to water less I’d say every two weeks

    I shower it to clean it , run the shower for humidity , clean it up by cutting the brown & yellow leaves off , I drain it an it’s still turning brown & yellow BUT! I did add a lot of light to it as well like the growing plant light so I’m so sad over this right now can you give me any other suggestions?

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there Ashley! It sounds like you're being an extremely attentive plant parent!! If you've moved it into a brighter location (from a darker space) there is always the possibility it can be adjusting to the new light levels. My other question is, "Do you fertilize?" I ask because browning/yellowing levels can be a nutrient deficiency. I would recommend an organic fertilizer from Alaska, it's fish plant food that has high levels of nitrogen in it. My last piece of advice is to make sure that the palm is being watered on a consistent basis. If you know it takes a specific amount of time (i.e. 7 or 10 days) for the soil to dry out completely then water on those days and try to not let it go without water longer than that.

  • @christah4102
    @christah4102 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can you repot one of these palms during this time of year? I have brought mine in for the winter, but I wanted to repot them before it got cold. Unfortunately that didn't happen due to some family issues so now I'm afraid it's too late. They are still in the pot that they were in when I purchased them over the summer. If it's not good to repot during winter, will they be okay in the original pots that they came in, until spring? Thank you for the video! I'm a 1st timer (never had a real plant in my life!) so this is all new to me.

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey hey! Yeah you should be good to go! You might see some yellowing of leaves. This is normal and the plants way of focusing on establishing its root system in its new pot. In this video of how to care for your majesty palm, very informative!! I live in Texas and I would love to place my palms around the pool BUT they will be in hot direct Sun. How do I protect them? Currently they are on my shaded patio. I do put them on the age of the patio to get some Sun. I had them in the house but had to put them outside because of the gnats they attract. Your feedback is greatly appreciated 😎

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ashleigh! Good decision to put them outside for the spring/summer - if they’re in direct sun with intense heat, there might not be much to stop the sunburn. What I can recommend is to slowly acclimate the palms to direct sun over the course of a week. Every two days move it to a brighter location until it’s sitting in their desired location. So you’ll be moving your palm about 3 times to acclimate it. Also make sure to keep up on the watering, the higher the light and heat the more water your palm will need. You can also prune away any browning or burnt fronds. I hope this helps.

      You can and it will regrow as long as you don’t cut down to the bare the stem but I wouldn’t recommend it as it could weaken the new fronds. Leaving a few healthy fronds will help the palm to photosynthesize properly.

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, you can absolutely plant your majesty palm in the ground. Just a few tips:
      - make a hole that is 1.5x to 2x large than the root ball and make sure the entire root ball is covered with dirt.
      -keep it well-watered for the first week or so.
      - Also I would tie it down just so it doesn't blow over if your area is prone to high winds.
      - plant your palm in a place that receives morning sunlight and bright indirect light, for optimal growth.
      Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Me too! Just bought it from Lowe’s 2 weeks ago. I brought it in and clipped the ends. 😬🤞🏾🤞🏾

      I remember hearing someone say that they treat this plant like an annual and after raising quite a few of them I can't say I disagree. I give it all I got I keep it in the light give it love water and everything it could need and it will get some plant condition and die. I really love this plant but honestly f it

    Did you say this plant brings spiders if I keep them in doors?

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re prone to spider mites when in doors but with proper air circulation and regular plant maintenance you should be fine ☺️

    I’m curious if anyone has ever kept a majesty palm alive for more than a couple years? I’m quite the green thumb in zone 6 and I’ve killed like 6 of these.

      It’s definitely possible, they need an insane amount of light when brought inside, they should never be allowed to completely dry out and could benefit from a humidifier. also they tend to take up quite some room

    Can I grow babies from these palms?

    • @chrisjames9580
      @chrisjames9580  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can!! The palm will produce off-shoots aka pups, once they’re a sufficient size you can cut it away from the main palm using a sharp servile
      Knife. Try to get as many roots as you can when removing the pup from
      The mother plant.

    With all that nasal whining in baby talking it's hard to understand your video if you're going to make a video learn to pronounce your words and speak clearly
